Bayonetta Featured Review

Bayonetta Review by: baileyface544 - 6.8/10

BayoNOTta
Devil May Sue

I recently finished Bayonetta on my roommate's 360, after hearing numerous conflicting opinions on the game. Some have cited it has one of the best games they have ever played, and other have talked like it caused them psychical pain. And not the call a doctor after 4 hours kind either. So, given the huge difference of opinion on the game, I thought it would be worth my time to play it, and see where my feeling fell. As usual, they fall somewhere in the middle of both extremes. Bayonetta is a game developed by Platinum games, and published by Sega. Sega's influence can be clearly seen by the fact that the halos that act as currency are clearly meant to remind you of Sonic's rings. They even make the noise, and one level has you doing Sonic style loops on a motorcycle. While they may have a few things connected to Sonic though, the gameplay style is strongly reminiscent of Devil May Cry. Even down to how the levels are laid out, and how Bayonetta is upgraded. Still, this make sense as Hideki Kamiya directed both of these games (so naturally the header was nothing more than a joke). However, while this does have a lot of similarities to Devil May Cry, it's not a straight clone. It brings a lot of new ideas, and new concepts to this particular style of spectacle fighter. Unfortunately not all of them are improvements. I will say, combat is a blast. It smooth, and the weapons and combos really give the joyous, ridiculous feel that Devil May Cry originally brought us long ago. However, it has some major problems. Really the biggest problem I have with this game in general is flow, or rather lack of it. It's infuriating how this game can't seem to build
a good pace, which is a big problem for a game that skates by (and at one point you get actual skates) on high adrenaline action. The game is riddled with Quick Time Events too, and cinematic's pop up every 2 seconds. Cinematic's that often aren't needed in the least and heavily repeated. Also, another large gripe I had was that most enemies were reused with alarming regularity. In fact, I think the game only had about 8 or 9 different enemies barring bosses, and even some of the bosses returned as min-bosses 2 or 3 times. Even worse, the squeezed Quick Time Even into the battles as well. further adding to the monotony of it all. Because of this, even the amazing combat system stared to feel routine and boring. As fun and diverse as these weapons are to use, that took a lot of work to ruin. I have a lot of other things to say about this game, but instead of blindly ranting, let's get to the breakdown.

Graphics

Alright, so we got a 8 here. Has many problems as I have with the game, very few of them are in this department. The game looks great. Bayonetta looks kinda odd, but small gripe. Also, the reuse of enemies didn't even bring a color swap in most cases, and some of the enemies were designed and animated in such a way that it was difficult to tell when they were preparing an attack. Also, while most of the cutscenes were breathtakingly done, some of the cutscenes took this almost..comic book approach, which while not necessarily a bad thing if done right, was not done right here. For one thing, they were horrible inconsistent. Some cutscenes were like that, and some weren't. Another being that they weren't done in an artistic way, and it basically looked like the picture just froze, and the audio kept going. In fact, at first, I thought that was exactly what happened. One thing I didn't like at all (although it more of a design choice, not graphical issue) was that Bayonetta's power was connected to her hair, which she fashioned into clothes as well. What this effectively means is that whenever she uses her powers, her clothes come off. This is something that happens constantly. However, I suppose it fits the tone of the game, as Bayonetta's big hook was the increased sexualization of the entire game. Everything Bayonetta does is fetishist, even down to special move done mid battle, the healing lollipops, and did I mention her clothes disappearing every 2 seconds? It's done to an almost embarrassing degree, and it's so over the top it's not even appealing. Heck, it reached almost creepy levels. Now, I've heard that this was meant to be ironic, but you know what? I can cut my own hand off ironically, but I'd still be missing a hand. I didn't factor this into the score however, because like I said, it was a theme and not really a problem with the graphics. Still, this seemed like a good place to mention it. Otherwise though, the game has some impressive visuals, and stunning fight scenes. Even the few fights that aren't in cutscenes!

Sound

I'm really not sure what to say about the sound. I'll go with a 7...I guess. The game featured a number of songs I did not like, but that was mostly a matter of preference, so I will not count off for that. Now, while I did like the all too infrequent jazz numbers quite a bit, most of the game had a very pop sound to it that I personally did not care for. Still, as I said, I will not count off for that because while I did not enjoy them, they did lend the game a certain light hearted, and upbeat tone. That, and the fact that they seemed to set well with the pace (the moments the game actually managed to build some) defiantly earn it some points. What I will count off for however, is the extreme repetition of the song "Fly me to the Moon" which you will hear at bear minimum, once per stage. Sometimes several times in a single stage. I grew to hate that song by the end of this game. I'll also add, that while most of the music fit decently, and some of it fit quite well, I saw nothing spectacular in this department either.

Addictiveness

Ok, this was a difficult one for me to score. I decided to go with a 7 though. Mainly because the gameplay is very addictive. Also, the side missions are interesting enough to make you want to play them all. You might find yourself replaying missions to try and get a better ranking, or find some of the various unlockables. Still, like me, you might not. While the gameplay is fun, and the secrets well hidden and fun to look for, the problem I mentioned before likely will get in the way. And that's flow. I will go into this issue more a bit later (I've decided this problem is big enough to get it's own section) but the constant interruptions of gameplay, and frequent QTE's, cut down on this enjoyment and replay-ability. If they don't bother you however, you will find endless enjoyment going over levels again and again to find all the goodies, and to get a better score.

Story

Any of you who have read my reviews with any frequency might already know this about me, but I am a sucker for a good story. A game that has tons of issues can be redeemed, in my book, if it has a great story. Bayonetta....does not have one of those. Now, lack of a real story other than simple concepts does not hurt a story (Look at Mario, or many Zelda and Castlevania games), however, a
bad story does. And Bayonetta's story is a complete mess. You will have to read all the notes you find to really understand all of it, but even when you get everything it's kinda cliché, and doesn't make a whole lot of sense. You have several competing forces and cults, you have Bayonetta who seems to have made a deal with Satan to kill angels for her powers, though these angels are all kinda d-bags anyway, and trying to destroy the earth, and forces of hell want to save it I guess. You meet a little girl who, I won't spoil it for you (in case you don't figure it out in 3 seconds flat), has the lamest, and most predictable twist about her I've seen in quite some time. Dialogue is atrocious, and predominately consist of one-liners that aren't even that good. Which would be fine, accept that the game tries so hard to have a serious story, that the constant one-liners only undermine the whole thing (not that it was a quality story to begin with, but still) and quite frankly, I would have started skipping cutscenes related to the story if I hadn't been planning to write a review on the game. It gets some points back in the end however, as some of the conversations with the little girl and Bayonetta were quite good. Brought a couple very touching moments, and some great comic relief. However, it was too little too late. For the most part Bayonetta delivers a story that tries way to hard, and is almost schizophrenic in tone at times. It can't decide if it wants to be campy, or serious, and brings a horrible mixture of both. Personally though, I think they should have gone campy as the framework for the story was just ridiculous, and poorly laid out. Often, I didn't even know why I was where I was, and Bayonetta just kinda seemed like she was just doing stuff to do it at that point. So yeah, the story gets a 4, and only that high because of the little girl. Now, I know some people have praised he story, but I swear, they must have been playing a different game then I was. Sorry.

Depth

Well, for you Bayonetta fans who didn't stop reading out of rage, I get to say some positive things about the game again! The reason is, despite the issues I have with the game, it does have a ton of depth. I'll start with one thing, that while small, was greatly appreciated. That is the ability to try out new techniques before you purchase them. I wish more games like this had that. Techniques can be expensive, and this keeps you from wasting money on ones that you don't really like. Loading screens as well have seen a nice touch. Instead of sitting at a loading screen doing nothing, you can move Bayonetta around an endless, empty stage, and practice combos or just mess around. Bayonetta is a blast to control, so this really is a nice touch. Also, I'll mention the side missions. They are found throughout the stage, and often hidden, but they are varied and fun. One has you trying to kill an enemy with a very limited number of attacks. One only allows you to damage enemies during witch time (basically bullet time triggered when perfectly dodging an attack). They have many others, but are completely worth it. Beyond that, you find tons of collectibles around the stage, many well hidden, and a lot of notes that give you more in depth view into the story and characters (not that you'll likely care, but it's there). You have a slew of different weapons, all with unique fighting styles, and quite a few techniques and combos, adding an enormous amount of depth to combat. You can even turn into animals with different abilities. You have various costumes, difficulty modes, and the game itself is pretty long. A lot has been packed into this game, and it's likely you will find something to appeal to you. A point here was taken off for the heavy reuse of enemies however. Other than that though, this game brings a lot of different toys to the playground, and you'll have plenty to sift through and find as you explore the decently designed, and often unique stages the game has to offer you.

Difficulty

The game offers you an appropriate challenge on every difficulty. Bayonetta is easy to use, but difficult to master. The scaling is natural, and about average. So, it gets an average 5. Not a bad score for this category mind you...

Flow

This is a big enough problem that it gets it's own section, and I would rate it at 1.
Action will be interrupted  when you first enter an area to show the barrier going up. Action will be interrupted once or more during the fight usually, to show something happening that is not very interesting likely. And then action will be interrupted to show Bayonetta blocking a kiss, and the barrier blocking escape from the area shattering. This will be repeated around 10-15 times every chapter, and happens roughly every minute or two. Sometimes less, Sometime more, but you get the idea. And that will just be that specific cutscene. You will see many others. Even mid battle, you will be interrupted constantly with QTE's and button mash test when facing larger enemies, or using special attacks. For an adrenaline based action fighting game, this is simply unacceptable. You'll most likely spend more time watching the game, than actually playing it.

Judgement

Overall, 6.8 was the score I decided on. This may seem odd given the praise I gave it, but I feel like most of the good choices were overshadowed by the bad ones. The in depth look into events and characters through notes would have been a great touch, if only the story was good enough to care. The diversity in tactics, and various ways to approach combat, was dulled by the lack of diverse enemies. The amazing graphics were marred by their disturbing level of sexualization. And the utterly spectacular gameplay was crippled by the frequency with which they took you out of it. Bayonetta's fight scenes look like something straight out of an anime, and it seems this game would have been happier as an anime. Still, buried under bad design choices, is an amazing game. I have yet to play Bayonetta 2, but if it fixes these issues, than I would be excited to play it. The reason for that is, while these were game breaking issues for me, the game was amazing beyond them. If none of what I mentioned sounds like a major problem for you, then I would highly recommend Bayonetta. Otherwise, I hear the newest DMC is pretty good....
