Battletoads Review by: rcarter2 - 8.8/10 Battletoads: Prepare for a challenge Overall: 8.3
The NES is well known by the older generation of gamers for making some of the most difficult video games in history. When they are asked to list some of the hardest NES games of all time, Battletoads is almost always on that list. This game is borders on cult classic, and it definitely lives up to it's hype. It is an old fashioned beat em up side-scrolling game with about a dozen twists, the obvious one being you are muscular human-sized toads pounding pigs, rats, and robots until they beg for mercy.
Graphics: 10
When it comes to graphics, the NES has it's ups and downs. But they went all out on this game. The environment is just stunning, especially considering what they had to work with. Each character had shadows, levels had running water, well shaded objects, a background that turns from wood stakes to endless fire, and the list goes on. The creators of this game were not lazy when it came to the small details with this, and it is one of the most beautiful graphics the NES gave.
Sound: 10
Have you ever played a game and hated the music or sound effects so much that you had to mute your TV? I can assure you that will not be
the case when you play this game. If anything, you will crank that volume up! I love the crunching sound of your light punches, and then the
deep BASH when you knock them off the screen. The music of this game is also amazing, and better yet, is unique to each level. That means you don't have to listen to the same music over and over again. Lastly, this is likely the ONLY game you will keep paused just to hear the awesome paused music.
Addictiveness: 6
Even though there is a variety of things to do in this game, the sound rules, and has awesome graphics, I had to give it dock it on addictiveness simply because it is so hard. You have a fair amount of opportunities for extra lives, and you get three continues. But the game is still ridiculously hard, and you are sent back to a checkpoint every time you lose a life, meaning you have to repeat hard parts again. Since there are no passwords, you can't continue from a level after you lose completely. When a game is this long, that hinders the addictiveness. There is nothing more frustrating than playing for an hour, getting really far, dying, and have to start from the very beginning. You are likely to quit for a while rather than keep playing.
Story: 7
Stories typically aren't super well developed in NES games, and this is no different. The main story is the Dark Queen has captured a princess and one of the Battletoads, so it is up to the other two to rescue them. I bumped up the story a point because the banter the dark queen gives you before and after each level, and the Falcon's (toad's commander) offers insults back to her can be entertaining. The game also has different things, and they pick them randomly each time you play, so it is worth reading the dialogue even if you played before since it will be different. Also, the fact the toads names are Pimple, Rash, and Zitz is enough to bump up the story by a point.
Depth: 10
Even though this game follows a completely linear path, leaving no room to explore, this game is still massive. There are 12 levels in all. The first level is pretty short, but it pretty much ends there. A lot of the levels will take you up to 15-20 minutes to go through assuming you don't die and do things perfectly with no stopping. I also this was a beat em up game with many twists, and this is why. Not only do you get to pound enemies to oblivion, you get to ride turbo bikes, surf, fly a jet, travel through an entire level hopping on giant snakes, travel through an entire descending down a hole with a rope, swimming, race rats, and ride a clinger winger (just have to see that one). There is not a lack of variety, so you can't claim this game gets repetitive.
Difficulty: 10
This is a game that has more than earned a 10 rating on difficulty. Though normal enemies aren't too much of a problem, the environment is a giant death trap. About half the things in this game are instant kills. On two levels (the bike level and jet level) it starts off easy. But at the end, the obstacles are coming at you so fast, your movements have to be perfection. A lot of times, that is a figure of speech. Not on this. If you delay for the slightest possible moment, you crash and burn. On the clinger winger level, there is no easy beginning. The entire has to be near perfection, or you will die because the orb chasing you is faster than you are. This game is likely the cause of a lot of NES consoles being broken, controllers flying through the TV, and hair pulled out. Don't start this game taking it lightly. Battletoads Box Description: Okay toads! Let's get EVEN! When the evil Dark Queen kidnaps both your best buddy and the best looking girl this side of the Mazallion Star Cluster - what are you gonna do about it? Are you gonna cry? Hide? Call the Starcops? No way! Because you're a BATTLETOAD and BATTLETOADS don't cry, hide or call for help. BATTLETOADS get real MAD - and then they get EVEN! So, strap on your blaster, power-up the Toadster and get on down to the Dark Queen's planet - but, watch out 'toad - this lady's bad, and she's got a whole mess of really nasty surprises lined up for you - like the Psyko Pigs, the Mutant Ratpack, Robo-Manus and the Saturn Toadtrap, to name but a few. You're gonna need all your fighting skills to defeat her - the Battletoad Butt, the Big Bad Boot and the Nuclear Knuckles. Hey, and don't forget to take along the Jet Turbo, the Space Board and the Speed Bike. Because you're gonna need 'em all, 'toad, if you're gonna rescue your friends and get the frog outta there with your green skin intact!
Battletoads Description: The Dark Queen has attacked and kidnapped (toadnapped?) your best buddy.. To make matters worse, she nabbed the best looking girl around! So, what will you do? Cry? Whimper? Hide? Call the Starcops? NO! Cause you're a Battletoad! Battletoads don't cry, hide or call for help! And they certainly don't whimper! They get MAD then they get EVEN! So grab your blaster, hop on the Toadster and go get 'em!
You will control a battletoad through various levels. Some are side-scrolling beat-em-ups, other are vertical drops down a shaft, fighting as you go, others have you riding a rocket or surfboard, shooting or avoiding enemies. At the end of each area, there is a boss. In some areas, about half-way through, you may have a mini-boss.

Battletoads Cheats, Codes and Tips: 5 Extra lives: on the title screen, hold Down + A + B, and press start.
Extra Continues in a One Player Game: Start a two player game. Beat up Zitz until all of his lives are gone. When asked to if you want to continue, don\'t. Play the game as Rash. When you get a game over as him, press start on controller 2 to play as Zitz. Repeat every time you die, and you will get 3 extra continues in a one player game.
Warp to level 3: In the beginning of the game, immediately headbut the psycho pigs, and run to the next area where the Walker appears. Jump on the platform and into the pulsating warp. Must be quick.
Warp to level 5: In the last section of the speed bike obstacle course in level 3 (where the walls come at you really fast) drive into the 10th wall. There is a pulsating warp in front of the wall.
Warp to level 6: In the Ice Cavers (level 4)jump on the platform that falls when you jump on it. Get near the bottom, and jump repeatedly, making the platform go up. There should be a warp formed at the top.
Warp to level 8: In the second snake pit of level 6, climb to on the first snake and jump all the way to the right when the snake reaches the height of it\'s path (avoiding the spikes). You must jump over because the warp will be gone before the snake reaches it.
Warp to level 11: In level 10 (Rat Race), when you kick the bomb in any of the three races, the Spazz you\'ve been racing will fall down from the top of the screen and hits it\'s head on the girder, sending you to the next race. You can continue to hit it for a short while with punching or charging attacks. If you hit the rat with a Final Smash move before you fall to the next segment, you will warp to level 11. 9.4 - Battletoads NES - Jack6651
Graphics: The picture is great! So many toads! And the great thing is that they look like toads! Sound: It has great music + sound! Like when you pause (Enter) in the middle of the game, you get a nice peppy/addictive beat! Addictiveness: I always play this game, almost every day! It is very addicting! Depth: A 10 because just because it is difficult, and it has 12 levels, it has received a 10! Difficulty: It is very hard, because you only get 3 lives which makes going through 12 levels a hard time, and if you even get close to level 12, you are very lucky! Overall, I love this game just because of it's difficultly! But, I already knew that the nes has a large collection of hard games and this is one of them! Now that I have money,I am going to buy this for my nes! (Oh and this is my firs review, so please take it easy!)

7.8 - Battletoads, ready for tough stuff? - Stevie 764
Review of battletoads, get ready to cry  and run to mother when playing this game!
Graphics - 8
The graphics could sometimes look a little confusing at first, but I only played the game once and I think they look ok, making me give the graphics a good 8.
Sound - 7
The sounds and music in this game is strange to me because the music that plays when you hit the pause button, here is what it is simulated like:
Me: *pushes pause*
Game - *catchy pause music beat plays*
I give this a good 7.
Addictiveness - 3
This game is just the hard stuff you need and the reason why you will end up not playing this game again is explained later in the review, I give this a bad 3.
Story - 4
The story is really strange, the story explains that a kidnap of one of the 3 battletoads happen and the 2 battletoads have to save their 3rd battletoad. I give this a "meh" 4. But it has traps to stop the battletoads from saving the other toad.
Difficulty - 10
Can you let me say this? OH, MY, GOD, this is just absolutely the hardest game I ever played, not kidding. I played this once, and the furthest I got in level 1 was at a flying bee that kills you in one hit which is absolute INSANITY!!!  If anyone plays this game, be sure that when you play, get ready to run to mom and cry to her, "I CAN'T BEAT THE FIRST LEVEL ON BATTLETOADS!!!" This is the perfect reason why I give it a absolutely insane 10.
Depth - 8
This game has maybe 20 levels or so? (I only played once and never did research on the game.)  The worst part of the game is that you can't save in this game, what a absolute load of crab because it isn't FAIR at all!  Here is a quote: "WHAT WERE THEY THINKING!?" That explains how unfair and hard this is, making me give this a 8.
Overall - 7.8
This game may be good to some people, and that "some people" are people who can actually beat the first few levels or maybe the entire game, the graphics are okay, the sounds are strange, the game is hard as crabs, it's unfair gameplay and being unable to save, if you EVER see this game, DON'T BUY IT! It is absolutely gonna give you rage and  a rage quit because of it's monsterous difficulty.
That wraps up the review for battletoads, don't forget to check out my other reviews! :)
Overall rating - C+
My experience of the game: I found this game upstairs in my room by opening up one of my drawers, looking in it, and I saw this! I popes the game in the NES, it was really weird, but the worst part was when I got to the bee in level 1 that kills you instant, it made me so raged that I slammed the controller DOWN on the floor when I turned it off in a rage. This is why I said NEVER BUY THE GAME EVER AGAIN!
One problem is the difficulty, it is full of insanity and crab!!!
Note: I put a b instead of p in crab because I can't swear on here, so the word "crab" will cover it up good.

8.5 - Challenging game. - Kadorah
this game is one of the most entertaining fighting games in the past years, for me i think the fighting system and the gameplay is unique considering the other games released at the same time. In addition, hardcore games should get more than 8/10 cause the fun in games is to play a hard game. i would give it 8.5/10.

9 - Battletoads Review - Marcmoney
Overall - 9
Battletoads on the NES is a game that I would have never thought of being a good game. It is like Power Rangers and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles where it plays like an arcade game. When I tried this game out, it was very fun at first, but then when I found out that I can pick up weapons, that just made the game even more fun. I really like playing these kinds of games and this one is pretty much different from the others that are related to this.
Graphics - 9
The graphics are very good for an NES game. I really am surprised that they would make a game that involves with toads. That just makes it look like a rip off of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, but whatever it still is a pretty fun game. The effects look very good and there seems to be no trouble with the graphics.
Sound - 10
The sound is my favorite. The game play music is good and all, but what is pretty awesome is that when you pause the game, it would play this awesome beat. What game has a music that plays when you pause the game? Nothing I would know except for this one.
Addictiveness - 8
The game is very fun to play. I would play it frequently just like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Power Rangers. Like I said, I like these types of games. It can be addicting sometimes.
Story - 7
I am not sure what the story is, but I think it has to do with toads trying to get rid of enemies from places. That is basically all I know and I know that it may sound useless to say. That is what I think the story is pretty much about.
Depth - 8
The game has some good features. For instance, there is 2-players in the game so that means you can play with someone else. It is a great way to work together and beat the game a little bit more easily. Another thing is the infinite continues. Now I am not sure about this because I have not played it on 2-player, but I think that there is infinite continues, the only thing that you will lose is your score if you get a game over and continue on where you left out.
Difficulty - 4
The game is not that hard at first when you play by yourself. If you play this with someone else, just know that stay away from your partner because if you get close to him and hit each other, you will get hit. That is the most difficulty thing in this game and I think that it is just ridiculous. Other than that, the rest seems to be okay.
Wrap Things Up...
Battletoads is a great game to play...by yourself if you hate seeing the fact that you get hit by your partner by accident a few times. I recommend trying this game out if you have not already, I guarantee that if you like the game play of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Power Rangers, and other games related to this type you will like it. :)

9 - A true battle of wits and reflexes - NovemberJoy
In the late 1980's to early 1990's, there was a huge TMNT craze going on, especially with the cartoon. Really, what was there that children wouldn't like? Action, humor, well-made animation, and an admittedly-awesome premise. But what about the other companies who wanted to leech off of its fame? Surprisingly enough, Rare was one of those companies, and to compete with it, they created Battletoads. They even planned to make a cartoon to make it a full-blown competition, but the cartoon was scrapped after the pilot, mainly due to what it was trying to imitate, and partially due to the abysmal quality. But, enough about the game's history, let's talk about the game itself. For whatever reason, Rare was apparently very, very determined to get this thing out the door as soon as they possibly could. In fact, Rare got it out the door so fast, that they realized "Uh-oh! We forgot to polish it and work out the bugs!" and proceeded to work a bit more on the European and Japanese versions of the game. They took so much time finishing the game that, in direct contrast to their speedy US release, the European and Japanese versions took them two years to release. But, for this review, I'll just be talking about the US release.Graphics - It's unbelievable what they did!First, and certainly least, the graphics are amazing for an NES release. There's almost no flicker, the environments are well-detailed, and both the player character and enemies are given some character with the animation - when you finish an enemy, there's several different finishing moves that can be used, depending on the enemy. And, when you reach the third level, you'll discover that they were really able to push the power of the NES - the scrolling is unbelievably fast, especially for an NES game. Even the cutscenes look great - though there aren't many of them, they're about of Ninja Gaiden quality.+Almost no flicker+Well-made environments+Great animation+HOW did they make it scroll that fast?!+Excellent cutscene animationMusic/Sound - Rare's outdone almost every other game on the NESThe sound is really quite satisfying to listen to, especially after some of the audio atrocities I've had to hear. It's like healing for the ears, both the music and the sound effects. They all fit the mood perfectly, and the music is some of the best ever composed on the NES.+Awesome music+Great sound effectsGameplay - Here's where some of the problems start to kick inYou know, when I mentioned the issue about the US version being released two years earlier than the other version? This is where that kicks in.In the first level, it's a standard beat-em-up, with running attacks, normal attacks, and combos. There's one glaring flaw, and that's the fact that it's nearly impossible to break out of a combo once you've been locked into one. And, one full combo worth of hits takes away two blocks of your life bar, out of six. Though you can get a block of health back for eating a fly(they are toads, remember?), three combos will wipe out your six blocks of life. Along with your fists, you can get a stick from what appears to be a wooden AT-ST walker by beating it until it breaks into pieces. But, the second level has you descending into a massive hole, hanging by an extremely long rope and defeating birds and toad-eating plants. This is the first, and certainly not the last, large gameplay change. And, there's a terrible glitch that sometimes happens here - occasionally, the hit detection will just completely die, and you will be able to neither hit enemies nor get hit by enemies. Since you can't commit suicide, you have to reset the entire game, and start from the first level. This is easily one of the worst bugs of the game, and that's saying a lot.The levels just keep getting harder and harder - i.e. the third level has you dodging obstacles with absolutely no room for error. And, with that, the levels and scenery just keep getting better and better - aka, the sixth level has you climbing on giant snakes, which is a bit more original than most games get. It's like they wanted to draw the player in with the excellent graphics and scenery, along with the spot-on control and such, but they forgot to tone down the difficulty so that it wouldn't crush almost any player's soul. The game's extremely hard, but for all the wrong reasons. For one thing, in the first level, there's a couple of flying enemies, both near the same area. If they knock you on the ground, they will proceed to pick you up and slam you on the ground, which is a one-hit-kill. Plus all the glitches in said level, the electric currents in the second level will take off three blocks of your health. In fact, this game suffers from one of the same problems that plagued the NES port of Dragon's Lair - almost everything kills you in one hit. And, when that's the case, what's the point of having a lifebar? While there are enough hazards that don't kill you in one hit, they are by far fewer than the things that cause lethal damage( like spikes and pits ).And, since the game is so hard, it's not nearly as fun as it should be. If it was the difficulty level of your average NES game, then it wouldn't be that bad, but they seem to have taken it far beyond what it should be. In fact, they made the game easier when they were fixing the Japanese and European versions. The JAPANESE get the EASIER version?! There's a reason why those Asian stereo types exist, you know! This should be the other way around!Anyways, even though they were creative with the level designs, they didn't put too much effort into the co-op mode, and actually making it so that you'd want to play with a friend. If you play with another player, then when they run out of lives, whether they continue or not, both players have to start the entire level all over again, even if both players were at the very end and the other player hadn't died once. And, in most levels, if either player dies, then BOTH players get sent back to the last checkpoint. And, here's the kicker - there isn't anything to prevent friendly fire. You can beat each other up as much as you like, but all that'll do is hinder you in the long run. So, in other words, both players will weigh each other down so much that they won't be able to do much of anything in the game. Did somebody even playtest this mode first?I'm pretty sure they didn't, because they forgot to fix a massive bug - in level 11(out of 12), the second player's vehicle never starts moving, and since you're being chased by an instant-death orb, they will die over and over again, and they can't do anything about it. They fixed this in the other versions...which almost convinces me that they just really, really hated Americans and wanted them to suffer.-Occasional cheap shot at the player-TOO HARD=Racism in the video game industry?+It's fun anyways+Two-player option-Both players get weighed down by each other-The glitches!+Very diverse gameplay+Interesting level designs+Spot-on controlStory - Just about average...As for the storyline, you have to infiltrate the Dark Queen's defense system and rescue two characters - Princess Angelica, who is a princess of...actually, the game never explains it, and Pimple, one of the toads' comrades. And I almost forgot to mention, the other toads are named Rash and Zitz. It's kind of clever, I guess. It's just your average NES game's story, though there is some amusing banter between the Dark Queen and the toads' commander between levels.+A bit of naming cleverness+The in-between level banter-Cliched as possibleAnyways, that just about wraps it up for this game. To be perfectly honest, you haven't been exposed to a truly hard game until you've played Battletoads. There's all those Kaizo romhacks, but those don't really count - they rely on artificial difficulty. This game actually got released, and it's one of the hardest games on the NES.So, let's recap -Graphics -+Almost no flicker+Well-made environments+Great animation+HOW did they make it scroll that fast?!+Excellent cutscene animationMusic/Sound -+Awesome music+Great sound effectsGameplay --Occasional cheap shot at the player-TOO HARD=Racism in the video game industry?+It's fun anyways+Two-player option-Both players get weighed down by each other-The glitches!+Very diverse gameplay+Interesting level designs+Spot-on controlStory -+A bit of naming cleverness+The in-between level banter-Cliched as possible storylineOverall Rating - A(Almost the perfect game...now, if only they'd made the US version the same way they made the Japanese and European versions)

8.5 - Battletoads: A Two-Player Game that is NOT a Two-Player Game. - SavatoX
SavatoX : Okay, X2, ready to play a game?X2: Hey, how come you get a cool name, and I'm just "X2"?SavatoX : Shut up! It's MY review. So anyway, Battletoads on NES. Now--X2: You know what? Forget it. Let's not beat around the bush here. Today, we will review one of the, if not THE hardest games in video game history, Battletoads.SavatoX : At first glance, this may seem like that game that's riding on Ninja Turtles's success, but it's actually really good.X2: This game is huge, it's addicting... and it's hard. Hard hard hard hard hard HARD.SavatoX : So we're about to do the impossible, and play an impossible game.StorySavatoX : Uh... X2: I think I better just copy and paste the box description here, rather than trying to explain it myself.SavatoX : Hey, that's my job!"The Dark Queen has attacked and kidnapped (toadnapped?) your best buddy. So grab your blaster, hop on the Toadster and go get 'em!"Both: Ooooooookay.GameplayX2: There's really no shortage of gameplay options here. We could sit here for hours trying to list them all. SavatoX : So basically, if you wanna know that badly, you have to play it yourself. This is probably the only game I have ever played that's less fun with two players, than with only one.X2: Hey! What is that supposed to mean? SavatoX : You'll understand in a little bit.Graphics and SoundSavatoX : Both of these get a perfect ten. Unlike a lot of games on the NES (I'm looking at you, Silver Surfer), every level has its own unique track. Even pausing the game gives you a pretty sweet tune to listen to.X2: The sound effects are so impactful. They really capture how powerful you are. The graphics are absolutely mind-blowing. In the speed bike stage, the obstacles move so fast that it makes me dizzy.SavatoX : I love how the Battletoads grow ram horns when they charge and how their fists enlarge when they punch.X2: So ram horns make you more powerful, huh? Interesting. *puts on ram horns* Baaaaaaaaa!SavatoX : I knew I should have just done this one solo.AddictivenessX2: For some reason, this game makes me want to pick the controller back up right after throwing it at the screen. It's like, it's too hard to beat, but you won't stop 'til you've beaten it. It's that addicting. SavatoX : That is, until you hit the obstacle courses, like the speed biking, surfing, and flying stages. Those just make you want to punch the developers in the face. No pun intended. X2: After you pass those (if you pass them), then it's back to the real fun.SavatoX : X2, I thought we agreed that *I* did the talking.X2: Yeah? Change of plans.DepthSavatoX : In my Super Castlevania IV review, I said that the game was extremely linear, but gave it a seven. That's because the game was huge, and pretty much impossible to play through all at once.X2: Well, it's the same case with Battletoads. If you go through the whole game without warping, you'll find that there are twelve levels in the game, some of them taking half an hour to beat.SavatoX : And like I said before, there is NO shortage of gameplay options. In the two-player mode, the game suddenly becomes realistic, and lets you "kill" your partner. X2: Oh, so there are giant frogs in real life, too? I'd better watch my back...SavatoX : X2... It's a game... And I was being sarcastic...DifficultyX2: This game actually deserves an eleven on the difficulty scale.SavatoX : In Battletoads, perfection rules. X2: He's not kidding. If your timing is even a millisecond off, your chances are a snowball in hell. Oh, but the two player mode has to be a lot easier, right?SavatoX : Wrong! You can damage each other, and if one player runs out of lives, you both lose.X2: Are serious!? This game must be impossible with two players! With just the one player it's hard, but with two, it's virtually unplayable!!!SavatoX : X2?X2: Yes?SavatoX : *punches X2*X2: *dies*GAME OVERSavatoX : What!? Game over!? But he died, so why do I get the game over screen!?Game Master: You two must work together if you wish to beat this game.X2: Miss me?SavatoX : Ugh... Fine.ConclusionSavatoX : *sigh* Alright, X2, let's finish this game.X2: So this game is more than worthy of being considered the toughest game on the console, and maybe even in video game history.SavatoX : Ninja Gaiden, Castlevania, Contra. Those games are a cakewalk compared to this game. Battletoads is NOT a two-player game.X2: But we love the graphics and the sound, and massive variety of gameplay.SavatoX : So now I hope you enjoyed the review, and *I* will see you next time.X2: Hey, what about me?SavatoX : Yeah. I'll probably bring you along again...X2: Yay!SavatoX : ...sometime next decade.X2: Boo!

Aah, a classic game turned to the NES, it's a great game, perfect controls, decent grpahics and the defination of NINTENDO-hard, especially the 3rd level, you can't go wrong with a game like this, it's on of the best on the NES and should definatly get an HD remake for Xbox Live, with a few more things to morph into.

I wouldn't doubt for a minute that he got to 999,999 pretty quick. Anyway, congrats on beating the game with a perfect score. jerryaberry 09-05-12 - 01:10 PM Impressive Richard geller. However because of rcarter2's time of 00:00:00 no one will ever beat his score now that play time is actually recorded as this is the deciding factor for ties.
