Angry Video Game Nerd K.O. Boxing Game Description

In "Angry Video Game Nerd K.O. Boxing", you fight the cast and characters from the hit Internet show: The Angry Video Game Nerd.

In case you are not familiar with the show, the Angry Video Game Nerd is an Internet show based on reviewing old video games. The "nerd" is a retro gamer like us and, like us, has been aggravated playing terrible games. Often, in the past, we would buy a game (or most likely get one as a gift) only to find out it was TERRIBLE!

"Back to the Future for my Nintendo? Thanks Santa! This looks great!"
(10 minutes later)
"This sucks!"

The show combines knowledge of video games & old systems with rants so acerbic and scatological that they can cause paint to peel. In quite a few episodes, characters from the game, such as the Joker, Cowardly Lion, Bugs Bunny, etc... join in. Mike Matei, who acts in these roles, and creates the episode title art, was kind enough to draw a cover for this game. He also was helpful by giving me tips and suggestions during development.

Enjoy!

Angry Video Game Nerd K.O. Boxing Featured Review

Angry Video Game Nerd K.O. Boxing Review by: Azul Fria - 8.3/10

Worthy game for a famous internet personality.
OVERVIEW

Angry Video Game Nerd K.O. Boxing is a homebrew Atari 2600 game developed by Devin Cook. You play as an unnamed boxer against a series of opponents from the AVGN universe such as the Nerd himself as the first opponent then you got guys like S*** Pickle, Jason, Joker, Bugs Bunny, and the final boss is the Super Nerd. Each character has a set of moves you must defend against to set up an offense against them because defense is what leads to offense in this game. Do you think you can win or would rather swim in a sea of anal freaking monkey diarrhea than play this game?

GRAPHICS - B+

The characters all have their distinctive features from the AVGN series that makes them recognizable as the developer did not take any shortcuts in the creation of them as most of the developers did in most of the early video games. Each fighter even has their own ring to do battle in and the rings themselves are properly drawn out smooth instead of having random pixels everywhere to make a level. The special moves are also designed in a way where you can see what is coming much easier. The only bad graphic but not too bad is the boxer you play as which is consisted of a bunch of scanlines but that is understandable because you must be able to see where the opponents attacks are coming from but it's hard to tell if you are blocking sometimes.

CONTROLS - C

The controls for this game I will say is average at most because the way they work aside from moving around the ring is that you must hold the controller button to perform offensive maneuvers (Left to punch with the left and Right to punch with the right) or defensive maneuvers (Up or Down to block). If you are directly in front of the opponent and they begin to attack, you have no choice but to either dodge or block depending on the situation. The reason for this is because if you dodge in the wrong direction, you'll be momentarily frozen and you end up eating the opponents attack. The controller button is also used to start the round.

GAMEPLAY - A+

The game starts off easy as pie but as you proceed through the game, the opponents start to get harder. I rate the gameplay an A+ because the difficulty makes the game exciting as you have to resort to different strategies to defeat the next opponent as the first three opponents can be dealt with by standing toe to toe with them and blocking everything they got then counterattacking. Just remember though, the nerd can be counterattacked after one punch, S*** Pickle is vulnerable after two punches, and Jason is vulnerable after three punches. Jason also has a special that consists of several right punches that can all be blocked and he is open for damage a few seconds after he stops so wait a couple seconds before attacking him. From the fourth opponent on, the opponents will add in a strong punch (fist turns yellow) that will break through your block and damage you meaning you must stay away from it or if you decide to go toe to toe with the opponent, you can dodge in the opposite direction of the punch with the exception of the Joker who will hit you with his opposite hand if he laughs first. That means that when he laughs and raises his fist, you must dodge in the direction of his fist instead of a way from it. Another thing to note for the Joker is that dodging is the best defense instead of avoiding him because the window of counterattacking is short so you must do so after his hard punch. Super Nerd is also another exception for hard punches. He has a rage mode where he will throw a series of strong punches. He will be vulnerable after the eighth strong punch. Some other opponents to take note of is Frankenstein Monster who you might say is reminiscent of King Hippo. Despite having a huge amount of life, all you got to knock him down once and he is down for the count. The brown turn is that fourth opponent I spoke of earlier, he has a special attack where he will drain your energy by laughing. DracuNerd has an attack where he will "swoop in" on you slowly and he will drain your energy and add to his own if he catches you but you can put a stop to that by punching him in the face as he gets near. Bugs Bunny's special attack has him hop around the ring and then hops forward with a strong punch that is hard to avoid. The hobo has a similar attack just like Bugs but he also has a rolling jab similar to Bald Bull where he will roll his fists in a circle before attacking. You have three rounds to defeat your opponent in the ring. After three rounds are over, whoever won at least two of those rounds is the winner by decision so you can dominate the first round and lose the second round, the third round is winner takes all. If the sign shows a minus, you lost the round but if it shows a plus, you won the round. The ending pays home to the Ghostbusters NES ending bad spelling and everythang.

Sound/Music - B

The limitations to the console are pushed to the brink even further as there is music throughout the whole game including each opponent having their own 5 to 10 second theme song before the start of the match. From then on you will hear the AVGN intro theme music throughout the whole fight except for the session in between round. After you defeat the opponent, the victory theme sounds similar to the victory theme from Mega Man 1. The hobo's theme music is a homage to the pause music of Battletoads for the NES. At best, the music was tolerable.

Replay Value - A-

The game is worth replaying if you are starting out at first because you are getting a feel for the opponents' patterns but once you know what to expect, the game starts to get too predictable but worry not because you can up the ante by increasing the difficulty to 2 or 3 beers as mode 2 makes the opponents' combos faster and mode 3 will make them cause more damage to you if they hit you.

Overall - B+

AVGN Boxing will keep you guessing for a while until you find yourself perfecting the game. Several opponents to learn to fight against and only two chances a piece to defeat them. Remember if you lose once, you get one rematch against that opponent then it is game over. Because it is a homebrew game, this is one of the games that actually has a proper ending of sorts even though it is only one screen. If you enjoy this game, another game you may also want to check out is K.O. Cruiser which is also developed by Devin Cook and features different opponents but the concepts are still all the same.
