|An Ordinary Sonic ROM Hack (beta) Review by: mohammedroxx3
Ordinary for a creepypasta but yet an amazing hack!
Well, hello everyone. I know most of my friends will be extremely surprised but look who decided to finally make another game review after such an extremely long time. (It has been months ever since I made a game review... XD) Yea... So I actually managed to have some time to actually make another review again and I really apologize for slacking off in reviews. I'll try my best to make more reviews often if I can again. This is really gonna be interesting since I haven't made a game review in such a long time. I wonder if I'll still manage to make my review long as before. So anyways, lets get started on this review everyone! :D
Why did I review this game?
Well, the main reason I reviewed this game is because it is very interesting. To be honest, I always wanted to review this game but I didn't have the time. But I'm gonna review it now and also talk a little about others things for this game. So anyways, firstly, I'm calling all Sonic fans and/or creepypasta fans to have a look at this since you'll definitely love this game and I can guarantee it
100% 70% percent at least. And you all can obviously point that out by simply having a look at the screenshots for this game. Normally Sonic hacks would always try to be extremely unique and different from the original game. And sometimes almost exactly the same as the original but with a few fixes and tweaks or a bunch sprite hacks in my opinion. However, this Sonic hack of Sonic the hedgehog 1 has definitely proved itself A LOT more unique than most of the other Sonic hacks I have seen. Why is that? We are about to find out!
Well, uhh whats so unique about it? I thought you said that we were about to find out!
Alright. So obviously by looking at those screenshots, you can see the terror of lots of Sonic fans. Yes. And I indeed mean HIM. That scary looking Sonic with the black eyes and a little red glowing dot in the center of his eye. Yep. Thats him alright. Sonic.exe.... Yea now ask yourself this question Mr./Ms./Mrs. When was the last time you have seen a Sonic hack and/or a Sonic game based off and/or with Sonic.exe in it literally for the Sega Genesis? (other than this hack) Also, I mean something thats not a game for PC nor an online game nor a picture nor a video or any of that fake stuff (yea you heard me) but literally something like this for the Sega Genesis. Also what I meant about "fake stuff" is that it just doesn't feel so real. I mean, a sonic game for the pc thats not a ROM or something for the sega genesis nor any other sega system just doesn't feel right and does not feel legit at all. Wouldn't you Sonic fans agree? (or at least somewhat agree?) Yep. And now there is a Sonic hack with Sonic.exe in it literally for the Sega genesis. Doesn't that just sound really like... real? unique? It sure does in my opinion! Nothing else to say here.
ok. So what I mean about "Intro" is that its not literally some kind of movie or scene but just an introduction about this Sonic hack. Or mostly the gameplay depending on what I actually type here. lol. Anyways, so basically, for you Sonic fans who actually knows the whole story about Sonic.exe and played the game on PC (game editor), some of you guys may expect this game to be just like that but more realistic. Thats not entirely true. The only true part is thats its more realistic indeed, however, its not really gonna go through the story of Sonic.exe just like the game for PC. So basically, this is whats going on, the zones and everything is unchanged. Basically ordinary and original. However, thats only for one dimension of the zones. There is actually another dimension. And its not really the most comforting and nice dimensions ever but yet it is interesting. What basically happens is that once you start a zone, it will all be normal and original. However, after 12.5 seconds, you will be teleported to another dimension. I have no idea why its so specific in timing but it makes things very interesting. Will we ever find out why? Anyways moving on.
Other Dimension? What about it? What is it like? Tell me now!!!
Yea. Calm down. lol. Anyways, when you get teleported to that dimension, you will still be in the same area and zone however there will be lots of changes. Indeed.... The first thing you will notice is that the color and graphics has changed. (Which I will talk more about in the graphics section of my review so I don't be repetitive and more organized). Yea. Then the music has changed. (Which I will also talk more about in the sound section of my review.) And guess what? The music is from Sonic.exe. It has nothing more than "Hill act 1 (reversed)" for the following zones: Green hill zone and spring yard zone I think. And "Hill act 1 (not reversed)" for Marble Zone and Labyrinth zone. How about star light zone, scarp brain zone, and final zone? Well, sadly, as it says in the title of this game, its a demo so its incomplete. So those zones are not playable... sadly. Anyways moving on with the dimension, the badnik's eyes have changed. Indeed you have guessed it. Looks a bit more like Sonic.exe's eyes or at least almost like it. Very interesting. Also, you may be like, "Big deal just destroy those badniks like usual". Well, they are invincible. Yes you heard me indeed. What happens if I try to hit them? You'll just bounce off like a weakling. Wouldn't it feel embarrassing that you are just going fast ("Gotta go fast!") and then when you try to destroy this little and slow motobug, you just bounce off it without even leaving a scratch on it at all? Yea. that pretty much explains it. Also, have I mentioned that the rings are just cruelly red? And what did I mean by "cruel"? Yes, They are cruel indeed in that dimension. Why? If you just grab one of those rings, you'll lose one. It does the total opposite than the normal dimenion rings. And there are rings typically everywhere. Isn't that just terrible? It sure is. Also for now on, lets call this Dimension "The Dark dimension" for the rest of this review. Anyways, Now, lets talk more about it in the gameplay section of my review!
Amazing! Thats all I have to say! Just kidding, lol. I'd definitely try to say more than that and not disappoint you guys but it is indeed "Amazing" but not in such a pleasing way... There is no reason for me to repeat all of what I have just said about the dark dimension so I'll continue on. One thing I want to say is that you should always look behind you while running off in the dark dimension. Why? because if you stay for too long there, something will gain up on you after a short amount of time. What is it? Thats way too obvious. Sonic.exe. There is just no way to out run him no matter how fast you go and how high you jump. He will always be on your back and start coming closer and closer and closer until... you just can't live to say whats gonna happen next. Why? Because your soul and one of your lives is already gone. But luckily you have more than one lives just like all other Sonic games. But be careful, as you can see all of your lives vanish before your eyes and I warned you. However, don't lose hope yet. There is always a way out of this and a way to win a game. Whats the way out of this? To get out of that dark dimension and go back to your good old original dimension. How do I do that? I'll tell ya right now. I have talked about badniks and rings. What have I not talked about yet? Monitors. Yea. You heard me. Whats this little monitor gonna do? Give me a little shield? Nope. What I meant is that it will get you out of this misery and this dark dimension. You will return to your good old and original dimension, however not for long. You just get back to the dark dimension after a very short while. It depends on your luck. You can have 10 seconds in the normal dimension if you're extremely lucky and barely 3 seconds most of the time. But who knows? Its random. So basically, what you're gonna have to do is to keep hitting any monitor whenever you are in the dark to dimension to return back to the normal dimension and just keep doing that until you reach the end of the zone. However, you must reach the end of the zone in the normal dimension. Why? Because at the end of the zone in the dark dimension, someone will be waiting for you. And you obviously know who that it. Who else but Sonic.exe. And if you got no monitors near you while you are in the dark dimension with Sonic.exe about to catch you, then you are pretty much doomed. That is all I have to say here.
Very good. Definitely very good. Amazing. At the title screen, its all normal and happy and original. And then, the screen suddenly goes like a broken T.V. Then it changes too Sonic.exe and red water and a dark sky in the dark dimension. The normal dimension is exactly the same. However, the dark dimension is much... darker.. and creepy indeed. It really fits how the dark dimension would be like. It just shows the sign of Sonic.exe coming since it is very creepy and scary just like him. Also as the dimensions switch from dark to normal, it also shows that broken T.V transition (forgot whats it called :P) The color of the zones is very dark and creepy, the badnik's eyes are almost like Sonic.exe's, and the rings are red. It just shows that impression of fear, sadness, danger... etc. just so much impressions out of this. Its probably even all the impressions out there but only all the dark impressions. Obviously nothing of good and light. Not pleasing at all. Its.... lifeless... since you will have no life anyways once he catches you.
Ehhh.... The sound is the same at the normal dimension however, the sounds changes once you go to the dark dimension. The background music is either "Hill act 1" or "Hill act 1 (reversed)". Also when you gain the red rings, the sounds are also reverse just like how it effects your rings amount in the opposite way (-1 instead of +1). And when you lose rings, that sound is also reversed. Its just so fitting for the rings, its red with reverse effects and reversed sounds. Just... fitting. Thats all for this. Fitting.
Despite this game not looking so pleasing and happy, it is addictive but for the true Sonic and creepypasta fans. Its very challenging that it encourages you to kick Sonic.exe's butt and get out of that dark dimension and show that you can escape from him. You'll just get used to loving to switch between the dimensions and try to outrun Sonic.exe. and I guess thats pretty much it for this part of my review.
Meh. Not much here. However, it still deserves a decent rating. Why? Because... We don't even know what the story for this Sonic hack is. Its just Sonic being troubled and going from the dark dimension and normal dimension attempting to escape and out run Sonic.exe. however, what is there that tells us that this is the only thing for the story? How will we know the true story for this? For now, we have little or no idea about this.
This game definitely has lots of depth. It offers A LOT. It has 2 dimensions, Sonic.exe coming after you, and your soul. However, there is not much to say here since there is no reason to repeat what I have already said before in the gameplay portion of this review.
Oh yes. This is definitely very hard. Almost impossible unless you are an extremely crazy Sonic gamer who has played this Sonic hack billions of times to the point that you have mastered it. You are stuck in the dark dimension, rings does a negative effect on you, invincible badniks, and a short amount of time before Sonic.exe gets you. You're only hope is to get a monitor but thats not as easy as you think.
Yep. Thats pretty much it. Overall, its an extremely amazing game. I have really enjoyed writing this review and I do hope I can do this more often again. Please tell me any feedback or comments and advice for this review so I can improve in the future. Thank you all very much for reading this and there is one more thing I want to say... If the environment you are currently in and your surroundings gets dark and creepy, Always watch your back.

An Ordinary Sonic ROM Hack (beta) Description: A completely ordinary Sonic ROM hack, where nothing interesting happens at all. Nope. Nothing at all..
.. yeah right. It's time to praise him.
The challenge of this ROM hack is to get through each act successfully, without being caught by him in the process. After the first 12½ seconds of every level you will be warped to an alternate dimension where rings work in reverse, badniks are invincible and, if you stay for too long, he will get you. The only way out is to break a monitor in this warped dimension, whereupon you will be sent back to whence you came. However, after your first warp and return, the time until your next warp is uncertain. It could be 20 seconds, it could be in 3. Just be sure to return before the end of the level, because there's no escape until you do.
From the title screen you can choose to start straight from Green Hill Zone and go through the whole ROM hack, or be taken to the Zone Selection screen. From here, you can choose any of the zones available and see your best scores from each act that you have previously played. Score works as normal in this ROM hack, except when you are trying not to be caught by him your score will be reducing every second until you manage to escape.
Green Hill Zone may seem easy when you start but don't let it lull you into a false sense of security. From Marble Zone onwards the challenge increases steeply. The number of monitors already in the original Sonic the Hedgehog would not be enough to get you through alive so more have been added along the way to make it at least possible to beat.. but not enough to make it simple. Be prepared for close calls, optimizing your routes, double-backing on yourself, and finding and relying on secret areas you probably never knew existed in the first place. Bosses present an additional challenge, as there is no break in the warping on these. You will find the warped Dr. Eggman a formidable foe, one that seems impossible to defeat. If you hit him enough times you may get lucky enough for a monitor to drop from his flying vehicle and return.. but remember to be quick about it. He is always after you there.
Unfortunately, I was not able to complete this ROM hack to its end in time for this contest, and only Green Hill Zone through to Labyrinth Zone are available to play. Labyrinth Zone itself is also still a little buggy, but it is beatable (even if escaping him on the boss seems impossible for the first twenty or so attempts).
Enjoy, and I hope you remember where all those monitors are because otherwise he will get you, and you will forever praise him.
