Altered Feast   yoshirulez!
The titles an undead joke. Feast yknow, And you're like, Undead.

Altered beast for the first system i ever had. A sega genesis. I Personally love sega genesis games. They make me feel warm inside. Yknow that feeling when you're sitting down in a nice comfy, warm chair, And you just kinda go blank for a while because it's comfy?

I suppose you DON'T know then... Basically, I blank out. But i still enjoy the games. Sega genesis games seem like second nature to me, I can play them for hours and hours. Which reminds me of a funny story last week.

I spent 8 hours playing columns for genesis, And got about 62 million points. And after that, I didn't want to play it ever again.

Day after that, I played it, :P I just love sega genesis games. I originally bought this game becuase my dad said he used to play it a lot in an arcade. And he wasn't exactly happy that day. So i bought it, And started playing it myself. I know, I am a HORRIBLE person for doing that. Another thing, It's also the OLDEST game in my collection. And i have a lot of games. A lot of old games. And i love this game. This game has made me appreciate games like double dragon and golden axe. Since then, I play those games a whole heck of a lot of the time. So i decided to do a review on one of my favorite titles.

ALTERED BEAST

Graphics:9. The graphics are great for a 16 bit system. It's not a block here and a block there eith a block arms (yes, a block ARMS) attacking blocks. Instead, It's highly detailed men walking around in tights or something, And when you get a spirit/shadow/soul orb whatever the heck it's called, Your shirt rips off and exposes your chest. BIG MANLY MAN CHEST OOK LOOK AT MY UNDEAD CHEST URK. And then When you get another, You rip of PART of your pants, and mor eof your shirt. Lastly, When you get a third orb.. you get...

A werewolf. Yep, A werewolf. That shoots firballs out of its fists? Very weird, But very idk...cute?

Sound:8. Die sound is gooder then most. Mostly they reuse sound effects, or they just use some generic stuff. This is different. It has unique sounds. Like, WIZE FWOM YOUR GWAVE!!! or VELCOME TO UR DOOM!. And stuff. Extremely cheesy, But good overall. Mostly because they used their OWN sound effects and voices. Unlike most. :

Music:10. Me likey this music. It's a bit dark for my liking though. They could have added some sort of upbeat bass or something. Make it less.... I dunno... Depressing? Happiness and death go good together.

Not that one causes the other or anything...Ehheh... ahem... Anyways.... I like the music. It adds a very interesting effect on the surroundings of the game. Like that one song form columns. That adds a really depressing effect. I have NO idea how I played that for 8 hours with committing suicide or something. Basically what I'm trying to say is, Genesis music is good. You should like it too. or idk

Addictiveness:7. It's fairly addictive, But it's not like the sort of columns, Steal your soul for 8 hours and force you to play the game, Addictiveness. It's more like a, Huh... I think i can beat that, and stuff. So basically, I'ts kinda addicting. It's been a while since i've played it though. I've been busy playing and reviewing other stuff. Like yoshis story. Fun game. It would be more addictive if it has some sort of fluffy cuteness added, Besides those big bears. I love those bears.

Story:5. Well, The story is pretty strange.... Zeus revives you, so you can save his daughter.

That's pretty much the storyline. I dunno how it ends though. It would be good if they added a bit more detail into the game. Maybe they'll make a remake. Let's hope it doesn't suck like most remakes. Yeah. Maybe make some sort of plot twist like uhh.... Uhm... Lemme think about that for a while...

Depth:4. Not a lot to do. I heard that if you beat the bosses after you beat the game, You'll get something good.

But i have yet to beat the game so i don't know. I wish someone could confirm it for me. Maybe you will. who knows.

It does offer a lot of levels to punch and kick at. if that's your thing. It's not really my thing but eh... What do I know? I'm just a hamster. A hamster who likes old sega genesis games.
Difficulty:10. Darn game is hard. Still haven't beat the dang thing. Those stupid bosses that take out one hit box point whatever it is thing. Those suck. They kill you in like, 3 hits. And that sucks. Because you don't get to finish the game. I don't think i'm EVER going to be able to beat the game. The ants are especially hard. They like to sneak up behind you, And when you try to attack, The stab you. Over and over again. And those big dudes. The big skeleteon dudes, They hurt a lot. And the boss of world 4.

Overall it's a fun game. Could use some more story and somethingmore than just punching and kicking. Something interesting. Yknow?

Like, If they made a plot twist where you have to fight the other dude to win the dames love. Like they did in thunder fox. That would be a bit cool. And if they I Don't know..... If they made it more cute looking. Possibly some more pink and all that jazz? Or maybe if they added some food that could restore health. That would be handy. Cause I'm sick of dying. I always die on the third or fourth stage. Because of those darn bosses and those weird ant things and turtles and stuff.

So yeah. Thats my review on altered beast. :3 I hope someone liked it. I didn't really get much sleep, So if it's sloppy, Then just say so.... Hmm... I could go for some sleep.

Welcome to your doom! Eh, OK   endings
Altered Beast was a graphical delight on the Genesis back in the launch day. In this, you are a dead warrior that Zeus brings back to life (not as a zombie, but whole) to rescue Athena from a bald guy named Neff. I know a lot of Greek Mythology, but don't remember a guy named Neff before.  This is a side-scrolling beat-em up, also two player, with a lot of parallax scrolling to make the backgrounds appear 3D. Your weapons are kicks and punches, to start with. Pretty pedestrian for a game with Greek gods, you might be thinking.  But this game is called Altered Beast, which happens to be your hero!
Each stage contains a different were-animal you can transform into for the duration of that level.  From werewolves that punch fireballs, werebears that have stonebreath (!) to super powerful dragons that break the stage they are in, you can collect strange white orbs to get stronger and tougher, until finally the third brings your power over the edge and you transform in a wild cutscene, and the music gets more dynamic. You must transform into the wereform to even fight that stage's boss, so you will see them all playing through the game.
The stages are a mixed bag. Take the first stage: a Greek graveyard, full of moss, pillars, intricate stone carving. It looks awesome.  And then second stage is a brown swampy area with hardly anything in it. The enemies will attack from the ground, the sky and even underground, so one has to use the attacks to meet each threat, for instance a ducking kick will hit skyward foes, try out all the limited move set, especially the often unusual were attacks. Unfortunately, due to only one kind of enemy dropping the power up orbs, you will meet 3 before getting to the boss, and often you are just transforming right before taking it on. So you sometimes don't get to use a wereform very much before you finish the level and the next stage with no power.  If you can beat that boss that is. The bosses are pretty wild, all things said. The first boss attacks you by ripping his own head off, only to have it instantly reappear!
Some hang ups are the limited moves you can do, the sometimes short duration (unless you play 2 players or skip a power up) of your wereforms, the transforming easily the star of the game.  The were animals are not balanced well, the bear is fairly weak compared to the crazy power dragon, making some bosses a cakewalk. You also do not get to choose the form, they are chosen for each stage, and the game itself is fairly short. There are a small number of enemies for each stage, and some are reused.
The nostalgia of this showpiece is good, it was a great looking game and featured some voice work at the time (a bit muddled audio but mostly ok). But the short game and small number of attacks in this side-scroller don't make it really one I'd like to go back to now. Games have come much farther than this, but Altered Beast had its place back in the day. That day just isn't today or tomorrow.

Power up.   becerra95
This game was introduced to me on the plug and play console which had Kid Chameleon, Flicky, Golden axe with sonic and mean bean machine. This was a pretty good game for its time and was a pack in title for the original Sega Genesis. It was considered a great port of the classic arcade game but since I never owned a physical release and only played it on compilation genesis games for Xbox… I have to resort to emulation. This is Altered Beast for the Sega Genesis (On emulation).
Story: 7
Awakened by the God of gods, Zues, you “rise from your grave” to battle hoards of monsters to challenge the god of the underworld, Neff. It’s up to you to conquer Neff and save Athena, the daughter of Zeus, and bring her back to her father. Are you up to the challenge?
The game is more so a beat ‘‘em up style game with some Greek mythology. The usual “save the damsel in distress” trope but back then it was pretty original with the use of gods.
It’s a 7 out of 10
Depth and addictive : 6
Bundling them together since they’re both mostly going to be the same talk. The game doesn’t offer any depth at all other than the story and cutscenes. With that you can change the settings with how much health you want and difficulty but other than that it’s just like the arcade. The game is like a beat ‘em up with some sort of platform jumping as you go forward to the stage and collect three orbs from grey wolves when defeated (usually by a kick or punch) and it grants you with more power until you transform into an animal of that stage. Whether it be a werewolf, tiger or a bear, even a dragon, it gives a bit of diversity as that’s the only way to have a battle with the stage boss. The level designs are varied and gives a good sense of transition with the outdoor graves to caves and even a mausoleum looking stage. The game has its cheap thrills but it’s not much to play regularly. Probably once a year or so.
Both Depth and Addiction is a 6 out of 10.
Graphics : 7
The graphics for the Genesis is pretty good in its time. It was one of the games bundled into the system (until sonic in 1991-92) and such. The graphics look good compared to its arcade counterpart and all. Big of pixelation but can’t really complain much to an early Sega genesis game. The stages look well done for a Sega title and it gives off a mysterious vibe from mentioned earlier, the graveyards to caves, mausoleum and more. It serves its justice to be a good port of the arcade in terms of graphics. The graphics department is a simple 7 out of 10
Sound : 7
The sound has that special Sega Genesis feel to it. Staticky, compressed, high pitched you name it. The soundtrack is pretty good and is suitable for the game and setting, and honestly the best part of the sound. The fact it has voice samples like Zeus “Rise from the grave” to the yells was kinda surprising for an early sega genesis title. The game over though, I felt like it was so off with the setting of the game but honestly I like it.
A 7 out of 10 for the sound. It shines in some areas while it suffers in others.
Difficulty : 7
Game isn’t difficult really, it’s more so about trial and error and finding out how to maneuver through the stages without falling to holes or dying from enemies. At first it can be a bit of a hassle but with the power ups and transformation it can be rather easy to tackle the levels, except the bear. The bear sucked in my opinion. Not much here also either.
A 7 out of 10
This is rather a quick review since there wasn’t much to talk about a 16 bit game. The game back then was probably really popular in the arcades, hence the bundles with the genesis. The port seems like a fairly good recreation of the arcade version and I can see how it sold well as it was different from other games at the time. Sega came out with the system to tackle the Nintendo and eventually Super Nintendo but I doubt this game made a huge impact to shift the tides, well probably not until sonic I guess. The game is well made for a port, but being an old title it has a more once in a while playtime and most likely go through one play through a year.
My rating :  7.5/10

Altered Beast   classgame
Well here we have another arcade favourite that gets the home release treatment like many arcade games made by Sega (I should play the arcade version of Alex Kidd the Lost Stars one day)
Story and gameplay: We push the start button and we kind of get the story there the protagonist is risen from the grave to rescue Athena, the daughter of Zeus you start off looking kind of weak looking but kick a blue cerberus and you can power up, do it three times and poof, werewolf/weredragon/werebear/weretiger/golden werewolf. You face off against zombies, weird flying things, purple headsuckers, anything and everything could kill you
Graphics: to be honest, I think they look better in the coin-op version, and the cut scenes prove it, but it doesn't have the options that this game has.
Addictive: You know I'm actually sorry that a sequel wasn't made who knows what other werecreatures they could have used but then again I really do have to play the Game Boy Advance version to see what else there is unless that was a remake
Depth: Well there isn't much Depth, depending how good you are at this game you could probably finish it within ten minutes
Difficulty: See what I said in Depth, it depends on how good you are at this game (or if you have figured out the hacks of the options and where you can push the A button.) Also I just played this game I was able to take down Neff very easily
Overall: I've played this game so many times that the cartridge's protective shell eventually came apart whenever I wanted to play it again I had to insert it into the console carefully, I don't own it anymore though (it's probably in the trash) I give it a 7 out of ten

Altered Beast   Itachi_4_ever
Overall 8/10
I had this game when I still had my Sega Genesis (or
Sega Mega Drive as it was called here in Europe) and as a child, it was
never one of my favorites, but now, I can appreciate it a lot more. I
didn't like it back in the days because it was too hard for me to beat. I
did play it a lot though, always trying to get past level 3 - where I
never managed to beat the boss fight. In this game, you get brought to
life to safe Zeus daughter. She's taken by a demon that's apparently
called Neff. I used to think it was Hades. That would have made more
sense. But overall, it's a fun game, and still a challenge, seeing as
even now that I'm 23 I still haven't managed to get to the end yet. (I
did get further than I used to though!) The most fun about the game for
me is seeing which animals you become to beat the boss. And the attacks
that come with it.
Graphics 7/10
For its time, the
graphics were pretty good, and I never used to notice the little faults
in it, but now that I'm older, I notice that the graphics glitch a bit.
In the beginning with Zeus' apparition for example, and whenever Neff
morphs into bubbles to summon that level's boss. It may seem like
nitpicking, but it bothers me a bit. The style also doesn't really speak
to me. However, I still rated it a 7 because the beasts and bosses are
nicely designed for that time.
Sound 7/10
Well... this is a
tough one. The voices annoy me. And as a child, I was never able to
understand what Neff said when he said "Welcome to your doom." But
nevertheless, sentences like those are memorable, as is the background
music that has a creepy vibe to it. The "Power Up!" when you catch a
special ball seems unnecessary to me, but other than that, I think the
sound's okay.
Addictiveness 6/10
It's not a long game, so I
don't think that when I've beat the game, I will play it again. But I
haven't beaten the game yet, so I'll keep trying until I do, which is
why I decided to give it a 6.
Story 8/10
Girl being
kidnapped, we've heard it all before (Mario anyone? : p ) so that isn't
very original. However, it being a Goddess that's kidnapped is and the
fact that her father decides to raise you, a warrior, from death to find
her and bring her back is quite original for that time. Add the having
to change into various beasts in order to defeat a boss to the mix, and
you have quite the original package. The Story - and especially the
various creatures you turn into - make this game more enjoyable.
Depth 5/10
I
gave this a 5 because it isn't a very long game. I've looked up how
many levels there are and it's disappointing how few, so if - unlike me -
you're good at this game, you'll probably beat it far too quickly for
your liking. I still gave it a 5 because it has a co-op option.
Difficulty 7/10
This
will greatly vary for everyone. I gave it a 7 because I can't seem to
get any further, but I can imagine that a lot of gamers think it's the
easiest thing ever.

Altered Beast review for the Sega Genesis!   G@mehe@d
Altered Beast was released in 1989 for the Sega Genesis. For genesis collectors it is a must have and after I played this I wanted to buy it for my Sega Genesis.
STORY: The story is great it makes sense and it's not complicated. The game takes place during Greek times and it starts out with a dead person that got summoned out of the dead by Zeus to rescue his daughter Athena. It's won't be easy though you must fight hordes of underworld creatures and to beat the boss you must collect 3 spirit balls and transform into a beast.
GRAPHICS: For an early Genesis title the graphics are great. There's themes inspired by Greek times, and they are done so well it sucks you in the game the moment you start playing. What's really cool is when you transform into a beast. Even though it looks cheesy these days, it's still cool to look at though.
SOUND: Like the graphics the sound is inspired by Greek times. The music sounds good, but the voice samples do not. The voice samples are played in such low quality that when Zeus says rise from your grave. It sounds like wise fwom your gwave. Any voice sample in the game is cheesy and ridiculous.
ADDICTIVENESS: Once I started playing, I could not get off. The first time I played this I died a lot and got a lot of game over's. I kept playing though and got better and better.
DEPTH: Because this game was originally an arcade game. It's not going to have a lot of levels. However there is a beast for each level with different abilities, and Sega added a mode after you beat the game where you only have one life.
DIFFICULTY: The difficulty is easy on the first 2 levels but it becomes a lot tougher on the last 3 because of this I'm sure anyone will get a game over so I'm going to give you a cheat code that will bring you back to the level you were just playing
Push start while holding the A button. At the title screen
