Disney’s Aladdin: Nice and Colorful   janus

Back when the movie was released in the 1990s, Aladdin was also released on the two main 16-bit consoles. Despite the attributed limitations to the Sega Genesis, Disney’s Aladdin was technically superior to its Super Nintendo version, although that latter version was more faithful to the movie.

Graphics: 9/10

The graphics in this game are really astounding for Sega Genesis.

They are nice and colorful and are far superior to their SNES version. For starters, Aladdin himself his closer to his movie alter ego by being tall and nicely drawn – the SNES one was rather short, although Abu was always close to him. He is less Prince of Persia-like by lacking the SNES acrobatic abilities, but he carries a scimitar and the swing is perfect. This makes progressing in the game much easier to my taste. Also, his swing varies depending where he stands (if he hangs on a rope, for example) or where he looks – pressing the up arrow and swinging makes him look like he tries to chop off ivy blocking his way. Finally, all his movements are fluid and life-like – he can throw apples at an amazing speed – from running to jumping to climbing ropes. You actually see the realistic movement of the arms and legs, something not done until Final Fantasy VIII for RPGs. And his “suffering” doesn’t make him jump back as in the SNES version, which can be practical when close to bottomless pits.

The levels are also nice and colorful, albeit smaller in size than the SNES version and with less details in the background – you don’t see the Sultan’s Palace. The graphics have logical perspective by letting you sometimes go down stairs and behind a wall and sometimes even go beyond the regular path (like in the second level). Although the colors show the Genesis pallet limitations, they are nonetheless well-adapted to the level. While in the streets of Agrabah (levels 1 and 3), you can see the houses around you, the desert level has a lot of sand and landing from high up creates some dust, the dungeon and Cave of Wonders levels are dark enough to reflect the “undergroundness” of the level and the Genie’s Lamp level is as colorful as the character. The Sultan’s Palace is a colorful and luxurious level, while the final level where you fight Jafar has a fiery red background of evil that reflects the vizier’s character.

Finally, the foes you face are also well-drawn and better so than their SNES version. First, when you kill them they die quicker. They also come in various shapes and abilities; the knife thrower will cut your apples while the fat guy will see his pants drop if you throw an apple. There is also the regular guard who swings his scimitar and you and a snake crawling around with his fez and sunglasses. Finally, the few bosses you come across (the thief, the Captain of the Guards, Iago, Jafar) all have different strengths and weaknesses and are also well-drawn (although Iago merely runs on that wheel thing to create ghosts so you don’t see much of him). However, Jafar had “more to offer” on the SNES, be it in his magician or giant snake form.

The only thing the SNES version had better than the Genesis version was the “cinematics”. In the Cave of Wonders, you see Abu taking the forbidden treasure and Carpet trying to stop him (rather than just see his picture); and after killing Jafar, you relive what happened in the movie, from his imprisonment in his lamp to the freeing of Genie.

Music: 9/10

Wow! I’m still amazed at how the game’s creators were able to adapt the movie’s soundtrack so well.

Tracks like Prince Ali (level 1), One Jump Ahead (level 3), Arabian Nights (level 4), Friend Like Me and A Whole New World were wonderfully remastered for Genesis. I even have to confess that, except for Friend Like Me, I kind of prefer the Genesis version to the original one.

Original tracks like Camel Jazz and Turban Jazz do have a jazzy beat to them, although the former one is livelier with its “desert-like” orchestration – you know, a kind of Persian bagpipe. Gloomy Tune (inside the Cave of Wonders) is the strangest track of all, with a mix of “desert music” that sounds out-of-place and more mysterious sounds that are more appropriate. Finally, Arab Rock (when escaping the Cave of Wonders and in the last level) sound appropriately dramatic – although I would have preferred a more dramatic track for the last level – and Rug Ride sounds dramatic enough to maybe have you blood pressure rise a little.

Sound effects are also good, but if you don’t care for them you can turn them off while keeping the music on. They are life-like – you can hear the fracas from the jars people throw out their windows – and even have some (would-be) voices like the ordinary guard taunting you with his “Come on!” and the enemies showing their suffering when you throw apples at them. The scimitar swing is well-done, and so is the metal hitting when you deflect the knife thrower’s attacks. The exploding skeleton in the dungeon sound genuine (you can even hear his bones bouncing everywhere), as is the case with the “magical sounds” (like the ropes in level 3 or when you collect a Genie token). Finally, there are some goofier sounds like Abu jumping on a man’s belly in level 2, the pink flamingos in the Sultan’s Palace and the klaxon sounds when bouncing inside the Genie’s Lamp. That level also features realistic balloons popping.

Addictiveness: 8/10

Thanks to the previous two parameters, I just loved the game. Some days, I would just go in the sound test and listen to the tracks because they are that good.

But what hooked me was the invincibility cheat code. As I’ve said in the past, I’m more of an RPG guy and games like Aladdin can be tedious to go through which was the case. The Cave of Wonders and the fight against Jafar were extremely difficult, but thanks to the code I was able to get through without a scratch.

But before I discovered the codes I was still able to enjoy the game up to the Escape from the Cave of Wonders.

Story: 6/10

This is where the Genesis version starts lagging behind the SNES version.

While yes, you revisit the highlights of Aladdin’s adventure, you do it less faithfully so. On the SNES you do walk in the streets of Agrabah and explore the Cave of Wonders, but you also see Jasmine and fly with her in the sky (a good level to grab some bonus items). In the Cave of Wonders, you see Abu grabbing the jewel that triggers the implosion of the cave. Finally you also see some dialogues at the end of the levels and your carpet ride has much more action – you see the lava “tidal wave” and have to make your way through a maze.

In the Genesis version, you do see some dialogues at the end of some levels but they are not cinematic-like compared to the SNES. Also, there are huge gaps between escaping the Genie’s Lamp and the Sultan’s Palace where Iago steals the lamp. That could have been improved.

Depth: 4/10

In addition to being less faithful to the movie storyline, Aladdin for the Genesis has less depth than the SNES version.

In the latter, there are three zones for each levels, all of which have a fair amount to explore (including getting all those red gems). In the Genesis version it’s pretty straightforward: you simply walk left and right to reach the end of the level and (when there is one) fight a boss. Other than Genie tokens and the occasional one-ups (which are well-hidden usually), there isn’t much to see in the levels.

Difficulty: 7/10

Despite a lack of depth, Aladdin still has plenty to challenge you.

Killing enemies/avoiding their fall offs (like the exploding skeleton) is quite a challenge at times. Since you can’t bounce on them like in the SNES version, you can only use your scimitar and apples. With the other obstacles around you (people throwing clay pots out of their windows, hot peppers on the ground, spikes, ball and chains, etc.) you will need to stay on your guards constantly. So you will appreciate the Jafar lamps you sometimes find that will destroy any enemy in sight.

The difficulty is especially challenging in the Escape from the Cave of Wonders. There are lava pits everywhere and giant rocks rolling at you. With a very uneven surface and other obstacles to avoid, you will likely get hit often and therefore die.

Finally, the last level seems to have an unusual quantity of fiery floors, making your progress and you fight against Jafar nearly impossible. Add to that his snake staff throwing magic at you and you have a nearly-impossible final boss.

But nevertheless, I strongly recommend Disney’s Aladdin for Genesis. The graphics are more colorful and detailed than the Super Nintendo ones and the music sounds much better. But if you want more depth and a games closer to the movie (and a possibility to get passwords to save your progress), then opt for the SNES version.

Aladdin Review   Marcmoney
Overall - 8.5
The Aladdin games were so fun when I was playing it as a child.  I like this game better than the one on the SNES.  It is a lot easier.
Graphics - 9
The graphics are very good.  There is no problem with it on this site.  In fact, the graphics in this game is pretty good. :)
Sound - 9
The sound is working good.  It has good sound effects too. :)
Addictiveness - 7
I would play this game often.  I did remember playing this as a child all the time.  Good memories. :)
Story - N/A
From what I know, there is no story in this game.
Depth - 7
The game has some features.  It has plenty of levels and just has 3 buttons to use, obviously. :P
Difficulty - 4
The game isn't that hard if you actually tried.  I did not have any problems in any levels, except when the levels start to get harder.
Wrap Things Up...
I remember watching TV shows about this.  It was very popular back in the old days.  I recommend trying this game out if you so happen to enjoy playing an Aladdin game. :)

Prince Ali Ascends   Hippykillerz
When I was a young lad, I was absolutely blown away by the Disney animated film called Aladdin. For my seven year old mind, it had everything I wanted from a film: great action, a great story, likable and quotable characters, a fantastic soundtrack and brilliant story. I'm guessing my parents knew how much I enjoyed the film because that Christmas, Santa Claus gave me a Sega Megadrive (much to my delight ha ha). Along with the Megadrive, I got two games: Sonic the Hedgehog, which is a review for another time , and Aladdin. It was pretty safe to say that my tiny mind was blown!
Being so young at the time and not having a crystal ball to see into the future, I had no idea that movie games would gain the stigmata of being terrible. Luckily for me, I had one of the exceptions of to the rule. Me and my sister sat down and were greeted to the 16-bit version of Arabian Night, which had to be a good sign of things to come.
The actual game starts off pretty much the same way as the film: Aladdin fighting his way through the street market while being chased by the palace guards. The controls are simple enough: press up to jump, press down to duck, press a to use your sword and press b to throw your apples (till this day, I have no idea what the point of that was). With these simple enough controls, all ages could pick up the controller and start their Disney adventure, like my 50 year old dad did.
The game does not have an actual story as such, but if you have seen the film before hand, you can guess what is going on. The street rat Aladdin, along with his pet monkey Abu, are told to go on a quest to find a way to get into the Cave of Wonders to obtain a magical lamp for a old man who helped him escape from the palace dungeons.  Due to this, you go and explore familiar locations from the film, such as the Cave of Wonders, the market streets of Agrabah, the palace gardens and Jafar's place. But, my favourite level would have to be when you have just met Genie and you play through the music video of 'Never Had A Friend Like Me', what fun that level is.
I know what a lot of you people are probably thinking to yourselves: "This lad has clearly got his nostalgia goggles on, this can't be a good game!" Not so. This was one of the 1st games I got when I found out about Vizzed and I had as much fun as I did on that Christmas morning playing it again a good 15 years later. It's simple but effective, a game you could pick up and, even if you had not played the game in over a decade.
Taking all of this into account, I gave this game a very respectable 8.5 out of 10
Enjoy and play on!

A Magic Carpet Ride   huntra1291
First off I want to say that as a kid I have never seen Aladdin. I'm serious. I never saw the movie as a kid. The first time I actually saw the movie was after the Passing of Robin Williams (Genie). Boy I had no idea what I was missing out on. The first time I saw the film last year I was hooked from start to finish. But I am not her here to talk about the film (though I know full well that I could). I am here instead to give my thoughts and opinions on the Sega Genesis version of the game.
So what we have here is Aladdin the video game, which is based of the movie of the same name. Developed by Virgin Games and Disney Software and published by Sega was released on November 11, 1993 for the Sega Genesis.I for one absolutely loved playing through the game. But does that mean its for everyone? Well lets find out in my review of Aladdin.
Difficulty 6: The difficulty is what I have come to expect from a lot of Disney games. Some levels are easy to go through while other levels prove to have a little challenge to them. The game isn't hard but its not easy either. Its great fun to say the least.
Depth 7: The games Depth is amazing. All the major film locations are there from The Cave of Wonders to the Sultan's Palace all are faithfully translated over from the movie.
Story. 10: The games story follows that of the movie. To paraphrase the story it involves a street wise kid named Aladdin who goes on a fantasy adventure with his best fried a monkey named Abu (whom I fell in Love with right away) to stop the Sultan's evil adviser Jafar from taking over Agrabah.
Addictiveness 7: I put the addicting factor somewhat in the middle. I felt that its not to addicting to play through multiple times but still addicting to pull off the shelf and play again from time to time.
Sound 10; The sound is amazing. The music is pulled right from the movie. From song like A Whole New World to the Robin Williams sung Never Had a Friend Like Me are all faithfully taken from the film. This is clearly music you will be singing long after you turn off the game.
Graphics 10: The game is beautifully detailed. Disney animators did a fantastic job of pulling the locations from the film and putting them in a video game format. I can't stop praising the game enough for its looks. I never once got tired of looking at the backgrounds as I was playing.

Overall 8.3: The game is just a joy to sit and play through. I never got bored of playing it at all. But it does get low marks due to the fact that it could have been a little more addicting then what it was. I still say give it a play through if your a fan of the film or just a Disney fan in general. It might just surprise you.
Final Thoughts: Usually in this section I give a summery of my review and give a final thought on the game. This time is going to be a little different.
I want to first take time out to say I am a huge fan of Robin Williams. He has always made me laugh many times over. He gave so many memorable characters in his amazing career. From playing Mork on Mork & Mindy. To starring as Mrs. Doubtfire and to voicing the Genie from Aladdin. He is a true comedic legend many times over. Robin you are gone from this world forever but in the hearts and minds of fans the world over you are still alive within us and with in the many roles you have graced for us. Thank you the for the laugh and the characters you have us over the years.
I would personally like to dedicate this review to not only Robin Williams but to his family as well for sharing him with the world. We love you and we miss you. Keep them laughing in Heaven Funny Man.

Aladdin   ross4587
The genesis game of the Disney Movie is enjoyable, once you've got the hang of some of Aladdin's moves. The story follows the same path as the movie, so, of course, the final level will be a boss battle with Jafar, the main antagonist trying to swipe Princess Jasmin from Aladdin's grasp. One thing different from this game compared to the movie is the level where Aladdin is inside the lamp, something that never happens in the original movie. Other than that its pretty much what I expected of the game. The levels are long, with different types of enemies or obstacles standing in Aladdin's way. There are also different types of collectibles, such as an apple that can be used to harm an enemy (strange I must say) and a giant gem-like object that can be used to purchase lives and make wishes (you get more than 3 in this game, rest assured). Also, the levels are pretty difficult, so be sure to familiarize yourself with the controls as you progress through the game. There are also two types of bonus levels, one with Abu as the playable character and one that can only be accessed by collecting genie head items. Both these levels offer chances to increase your numbers of apples, gems and even lives. So, overall, this game does offer a huge depth of game play and levels, and that's why this game ends up being an enjoyable experience.

Aladdin for Sega genesis review   SuperCrash64
I m here to review Aladdin for the Sega genesis so all of that being said lets get to this game
Graphics .The, cartoonist Disney Characters are here and they look actually really good the stages mainly are based off the villages in the Aladdin series. You can totally see all the characters very well . .Including the angry village folk the stage backgrounds are rather very nice detailed also very true to the actual Disney cartoon.so with that being said graphics get a 9
Sound a lot of cartoonist sounds are here and nice and clear you have all your basic guard sound effects including  all your basic swords swings. The Soundtrack is  good it once again takes advantage of the neat midi fm synthesis that the genesis uses ,My favorite song is on level 3 known as The  Agra bah rooftops. So sound gets a 8 you have a decent variety of sounds and a good soundtrack . Its not blurry sounding or Anything
Addictiveness
this game is one of the best titles for the Sega genesis or Sega Mega Drive in Europe & Japan its .Cause of the main way you have.to get through the tricky platforms and levels in the game . I personally love the challenge I get out of Abu the monkey s mini game. The soundtrack is quite catchy.  I really find the main levels the reason for the game being addicting .So addictiveness gets a 7
Story
The Story is excellent, It tells about the main Character Aladdin how he is a Thief. And  King Jafar  s Plot to takeover Agra bah by wearing disguise to tell Aladdin what to do sadly the ending is disappointing . So story gets a 6
Depth in general yes the game does take a while to beat do to the main tricky platforms and bosses. It will get pretty annoying but the game its self is challenging. I had many troubles getting through the lava part of the cave .So depth gets a 7
Difficulty it does have 3 options of difficulty such as easy medium  hard the game well give you some frustration on the levels Cause Aladdin  is an adventure game , and adventure games do have tricky bosses platforms. But its still enjoyable .
The Controls of the game are not stiff or  have lag in this Game .The Controls work excellent . Difficulty gets a 6 for this game
Final Verdict
Aladdin is one of the launch titles for the Sega Genesis that I really happen to love playing  ,  its still fun even today its a neat challenging. Experience with a lot of tricky paths and mini games . So the entire game gets a 8.9 why a 8.9, Cause The ending is pretty darn disappointing, , The ending is alright  but could have been better,  The game was a success in terms of challenge. Graphics and game, play , this game was not only on the Sega Genesis .It  Was Ported to computers like ,The Amiga and  Microsoft,s Ms Dos   also ported to handheld,s  There is a Super Nintendo version of the game but its completely different , than this version
sorry about earlier I was having some issues
more reviews coming soon

Aladdin An Adventure of 1001 Nights   justinfeena1
In this jump'n'run you play the famous orphan and has to fight against Jafar.
Gameplay:
The gameplay is very simple and almost identical to the SNES game, except the sword you have here. You jump and run through the levels and you can defeat enemies by throwing apples at them or slay them with the saber. Besides the fight and jump you can collect diamonds to buy lifes or wishes from the traders in the levels (posted screenshot). And at the end of each level comes the kind of slotmachine Ginie (posted screenshot) were you can get lifes, apples, diamonds or a "lose". You can also unlock bonus levels where you can play as Abu (posted screenshot).
Graphic/Level:
The graphic is almost the same as on the SNES, there are just little differences, but nothing worth mentioning. But the levels in Aladdin on Genesis are much less creative. In the SNES Aladdin you have for example the Ginie-level, and here you're also in a lamp-level but it's not as creative and beautiful as in the SNES version. And the difficulty is quite the same as on SNES.
Sound:
The sound is, like in the SNES game, ok. It's nothing memorable but a good sound with some nice tunes but I think the SNES is a bit better, but just a little bit which doesn't effect the sound rating.
Conclusion:
The Aladdin game on Genesis is also a good Disney game with a flat story, a simple gameplay an ok sound but with less creative levels and a good graphic. I think the SNES game is better but just at little things.
