After Burner II Box Description

You scream off the carrier, there's no time to think! You're caught in a swarm of enemy aircraft and more are dead ahead. They're closing at Mach 5, as your machine guns start blasting. Burn through a sky of flying metal! Radar-lock on the frontal attackers and respond with missiles. Your enemies are specks on the horizon, then instantly they're in your face, launching even faster missiles! Nothing can prepare you for the incredible speed of the attack. Hit your afterburner! Dive and twist! Throw your plane into a 360 roll as the enemy spins by so close you almost touch wing tips. Day or night, dog fight or missile duel - the terrifying speed of battle never lets up. The sky shrieks with metal menace. The intercept officer is screaming "Look out!"

After Burner II Review by: play4fun - 8.3/10

After Burner II (GEN) Review
One thing that fascinates us when we play video games is their capability in creating an immersion that takes us out from reality and bring us into the tasks done in the game, even if we never experienced the real deal. This is the reason why different companies and departments use video games or simulations to train people for the real task without suffering the real consequences if you fail, like in the military or driving school. I believe a good example of this is a game called "After Burner II" on the SEGA Genesis. This is the first flight simulator that I've ever played and I can't stop playing this as a kid; finding ways to improve my mobility through the levels; practicing my aim while approaching high speeds; adjusting my speed to avoid danger on my tail. All of these abilities can make one have a taste of the excitement and the endangerment felt from firefighting against enemy fighters...all in the comfort and safety of your home. The SEGA Genesis may not have the movable chair like the arcade version, this port still does the game justice through a console.

Disclaimer: After Burner II on the SEGA Genesis/Mega Drive is a very good and close conversion from the arcade version to the console. Many people think that After Burner II is basically After Burner I with minor adjustments, so it would be appropriate to treat this review as a review for a good After Burner port. There is an After Burner I version that is ported to the SEGA Master Systems in the RGR. This is NOT a good conversion and it is not a representation of how good the original arcade game is. You have been warned.

Gameplay: 8

This is a typical shoot 'em up game with the main purpose of destroying anything and everything in front of you. What's impressive about this game is that it is able to utilize most of the controls for a specific purpose. If you use the default controls, the fighter fires its Vulcan gun automatically, while you can fire missiles when you locked on enemy fighters. You have a limited amount of missiles but they can be replenished at certain levels. This means that the player must be accurate in their missiles or one might end up feeling unarmed and can't do anything but avoid everything. The two extra buttons are used for adjusting the speed of the fighter, which is useful when you want a line up your target or evade missiles. The fighter flies forward for the whole game, but your directional controls adjust left, right, up, down in 3D space. A special feature in this game is the plane's capability to do a quick roll in the air. This can be used to avoid attacks if used rightly. However, not controlling it well will cause the plane to do multiple rotations when you don't intend it to be. The controls are not perfect as there are moments when adjusting left and right can be more difficult than it needs to be. This can be extremely bothersome when you are trying to position your target to fire a missile, especially when you have little time to line up your target before letting the enemy do it to you. It can also be difficult in knowing where the boundaries of how far your fighter can move on screen. Not being familiar with this can cause problems in how you move to avoid missiles. Other than that, the gameplay is made for easy, thrilling fun.

Graphics: 8

This version of the game does a decent job in creating the set pieces for conflict. The design of the aircrafts, from your F14 fighter jet to the enemy fighters, bombers, and helicopters, are well design with detail. The missiles that fly towards you as well as the smoke trail that is left behind brings an edge. What is also commendable about this game is the smooth frame rate of the gameplay. For a game that is meant to be fast-paced, it is important to be able to feel smooth when moving around or to see incoming missiles. I can confidently say that every movement is crisp and it doesn't feel jagged or choppy. Even with these positive elements, the disappointing part of the graphics is the design of the ground when flying. I know there are limitations in programming a more diverse landscape, but it would be better to create bigger differences between different levels instead of simply changing the colors of the ground and the hedges. Maybe throw in some buildings or hills to create more diversity in elevation.

Sound: 9

Audio creates the immersion of the game and having the right amount and the right type of sound can go a long way in drawing the player in. The background music is also very appropriate when playing the game. With how intense and fast paced the game is going, the game plays music that have high beats per minute along with some variance of rock, providing a high octane atmosphere that would get you going. The reason why this is not perfect is because there are certain noises that are fairly appropriate during the time, but can become out of place as you hear them more and more. One clear noise that fits in this category is the sound of a guy whenever your plane has an enemy locked on. From instinct, it would make sense for that noise to happen whenever you have a target, but when you have 5 or 6 targets locked on, it would become annoying hearing this guy saying "fire" like a broken record on repeat.

Addictiveness: 9

This is partially because of how difficult the game is, which I will explain later in more detail. As you progress to the later levels, the enemies and their missiles would move faster and there is more of a need for your fighter to adjust your speed or go full throttle through the firestorm. The later levels would indicate it's more important to survive through the levels rather than destroying as many aircrafts as possible. That feeling of going on a fast speed while barely avoid all those missiles homing towards you is a great feeling and that rush really makes you wanting for more. This game also has a scoring system which adds every second that you are flying. Destroying planes would get you bonus scores and all of this would motivate one to keep playing, trying to get better and better. With the game operating the same way every time you play it, you know it is possible to get better if you keep playing.

If you are not good at these types of games, it can go either way in terms of addictiveness. On one hand, if you are motivated to do well, you would want to keep playing. On the other hand, you might get discouraged by how hard you think this game is and might not want to bother with it again. It really depends on the person, but for me who's been playing this game for a long time, I keep coming back to it with the desire to beat it as well as getting a improved score.

Story: N/A

There isn't really a story in this game. You are a fighter pilot trying to take down enemy fighters. It's as simple as that.

Depth: 6

Much of this category has been explained in the "gameplay" category. This game expands on what it means to "move and shoot," with speed control, multiple targets lock-on, and attacks from the front and the back. However, this game has potential of being more than just what it is. One possible add on that could have increased the depth of the game is to make it more than just an air-to-air combat. I know that air is the main focus of this game, but when you fly across land and sea, having enemies on these areas adds more danger and more challenge than just thinking about what is coming at you in the air. The only levels that have air-to-ground combat is the bonus levels where you just destroy buildings. These buildings don't fight back. Now, I am not sure if I didn't play enough levels to see new enemies, but if you don't reveal the additional enemies from land and sea in the earlier levels, it doesn't add to the game, especially when it gets difficult in getting to those levels. Even with this change, this game is still a shoot 'em up, which means that it is still a "destroy everything and survive" game, so you won't get anything different than those of the same genre.

Difficulty: 8

Even though the concept of this game is simple, actually doing it is not even close from being easy. As you progress to the later levels, the game throws more at you: more fighters, faster fighters, different moving fighters, more missiles, faster missiles, smarter missiles, a fighter behind you, a rocket behind you, both of them behind you.....all of them being thrown at you. Even with 3 continues (3 lives each), it is almost imperative for you to be nearly perfect to beat the whole game (or know the entire game). I personally have never beaten this game. This game has 21 levels (3 extra levels along with the original 18 from After Burner I). The farthest that I've ever gotten in this game is somewhere around level 12 or 13. Even when I know what goes on in the first 10 levels, I still mess up and every mistake will cost you. This is a very easy game to play, but a very difficult game to beat.

Overall: 8.3

This is a solid treasure in the genre of "shoot 'em ups." The way the game is designed provide a fast, exciting atmosphere that gives an adrenaline rush to those who play it. It feels thrilling, sounds thrilling, and plays thrilling. Overall, this is probably one of the top flight simulators of it's time and those who play it will have an exciting experience.

P.S.: My highest score recorded in the RGR is currently 10,577,250 while destroying a total of 326 targets. I dare you to beat that score! Think you can do better? ;)
