3-D Tic-Tac-Toe Featured Review

3-D Tic-Tac-Toe Review by: Azul Fria - 3.7/10

Tic Tac Toe gone 3D
OVERVIEW

Everybody is familiar with the common 3 x 3 Tic Tac Toe game where you try to get three X's or three O's in a row horizontal, vertical, or diagonally. Some computer games also has a 4 x 4 variation to make things easier or harder depending on skill. 3D Tic Tac Toe takes it to the extreme with a 4 x 4 x 4 grid. No it's not a cube. It is four 4x4 grids where you go against either the computer or another player. Not many people have probably played the game Qubic but that's what this variation of Tic Tac Toe is based off of.

GAMEPLAY - C+

As stated earlier, the object in this game is to get four Xs or four Os in a row. But since this is 3D, you are not bound to one plain. You can win in several various ways. One is matching the same spot across all four planes. Ex: Get all the same symbols on the upper left corner of each of the four planes. Another complicated way you can win is figure out how a Tic Tac Toe would look on plane then spread it out onto all four planes.

Plane 1: Top left corner.
Plane 2: Second from the left at the top
Plane 3: Third from the left at the top.
Plane 4: Top right corner.

You can do this in what normally would be vertically, horizontally, or diagonally and in a one player game, this makes the game extremely difficult because the computer controlled AI seems to know exactly what moves you will make and comes up with the proper countermeasures. Luckily there are eight difficulty levels so if you feel the computer is kicking you in the can too much, you can change the difficulty level and you will fare better. The one thing that pisses me off is that computer will always go first and always seems to choose O.

CONTROLS - D

The controls are complicated because you are trying to get used to the joystick to get your cursor into position and you got four planes to work with. On an emulator the controls are tolerable. What you do is get the cursor where you want to place your symbol and press the joystick button. It would have been better if there had been two buttons to work with but video games were still primitive at the time.

GRAPHICS - F

This may be an Atari 2600 game but there are absolutely little to no graphics in this game except for the four slanted planes and the symbols. The game is also just two colors and that is blue and white. There is also a third and fourth color (light blue) that only happens when the game is over.

OVERALL - D+

Yeah I may have given this game a D+ there is some replayability to this game as when you are facing against the computer, you try to come up with some strategies to beat the computer which is very hard to do. Other than that, this game gets cut a bit of slack due to the gameplay but the other parts can be done without.
