Vector the Crocodile in Sonic the Hedgehog Game Description

Vector the Crocodile in Sonic the Hedgehog (aka Vector in Sonic 1) is a hack of Sonic 1 by E-122-Psi, starring Vector the Crocodile as the playable character instead of the blue hedgehog. The game is modified to use Vector's sprites (edited from Knuckles Chaotix) in place of Sonic's, along with several modifications to the player's stats and abilities. The game was modified by Sonic Retro member E-122-Psi, with additional programming and coding by other members including MarkeyJester and flamewing.

Controls:

Vector can perform the Spin Dash while on the ground, and the Air Dash while in mid-air in any direction. Due to his reduced jump height and acceleration, these new moves can become crucial to completing certain levels:

- Air Dash: Press A/B/C while holding on the D-Pad to have Vector thrust forward in any direction.
- Spin Dash: Hold Down and press A/B/C while standing still to rev up. Let go of down to dash forward in a rolling formation.
- Wall Climb: Air Dash into a wall while holding A/B/C to cling onto a wall, press Up or Down to climb up or down. Let go of A/B/C to jump off.

Vector the Crocodile in Sonic the Hedgehog Featured Review

Vector the Crocodile in Sonic the Hedgehog Review by: Mohammedroxx3 - 9/10

Just Another Decent Sprite Hack
Hey guys. It has been a while ever since I made a review. Today, I found another somewhat interesting sonic sprite hack to review, well, to be honest, not as interesting as the others I have reviewed before since this is kinda similar to the other sonic 1 sprite hacks but with other characters but still worthy enough to review I guess. I also wanted to hit 10k CP today so I guess I'll just go for it in one shot.

Changes from this Sprite Hack and the Original Sonic the Hedgehog 1:

1. Instead of playing as Sonic in Sonic the Hedgehog 1, you play as Vector the Crocodile. (Pretty much obvious from the title of this game.)
2. Vector has his special moves, abilities, sprites... etc from knuckles chaotix.
3. Oddly enough, most sprite hacks has a few color palette changes for the badniks, small stuff... etc, and this hack has the same thing too but with green colors like Vector.

Thats about it for the brief changes, now lets delve in to the review!

Intro:

So, to basically explain it, as you probably already found out, this is a simple sonic 1 sprite hack with some simple but yet cool and decent changes like most other sprite hacks with different characters. In this sonic 1 hack, you play as Vector the Crocodile in the same and original zones of Sonic the Hedgehog 1 with some small color palette differences of some greenish colors in some badniks and sprites which I will talk about more in depth at the graphics section of my review. So, from the looks of it, I think the only main purpose of this sonic 1 sprite hack was to be able to play as Vector the Crocodile with all his special abilities in all of the original zones of Sonic the Hedgehog 1. I guess playing around with Vector's special moves is kind of cool.

Gameplay: 9

Well, here is pretty much the part in the sonic 1 sprite hack where everything is pretty much changed or at least most things. The first thing you may notice once you start playing the game is that Vector's jump height is much lower than that of sonic's jump height. Also, when you try to run, Vector does not run as fast as Sonic. It's basically as if the physics for Vector's movements of jumping and running is a bit heavier. Which isn't something very surprising. As you can tell, this is pretty much the cons for the gameplay but it isn't all that bad. Now, as for the pros, Vector has some special moves. One very cool special move which is useful for boosting Vector's slow speed and fun to play around with is the air dash. Simply press any jump button while you are in the air while holding the directional buttons to make a small dash in any direction in the air. Very useful and fun to use. Not only that, while you air dash, if you were to hit in to a wall, you will cling on to it. Afterwards, you can actually climb the wall, almost like knuckles! Not very sure how this will be so useful in Sonic the Hedgehog 1 zones to be honest, but, it's still a pretty cool move to play around with, I guess. And now, one more common move that lots of people probably already know, the spin dash! A very good and old useful move. Especially for someone who is a fairly somewhat a slow character like Vector. Simply hold down and tap any jump button to charge up your speed for the spin dash, then simply let go. Of course, you guys already know this move. Yep. That is about it. Simply, Vector has a lower jump height and slower speed, air dash, wall climbing, and the spin dash. Thats the only changes for the gameplay.

The Original Sonic the Hedgehog 1 & This Sprite Hack:

Let us mostly compare the original Sonic the hedgehog 1 to this sprite hack for gameplay since this mostly has changes for gameplay. So, let us see, what would be better, playing as the original Sonic in Sonic the hedgehog 1, or playing as Vector from this sprite hack in Sonic the hedgehog 1? Ok, so in terms of speed, Sonic can run faster and jump higher than Vector. In terms of using special abilities or moves, Vector has a lot more special abilities than Sonic. So, if you are type of person who like to "speedrun" as fast as they can through zones, I would definitely suggest them to play as Sonic. If you are the type of person who is not much of the one who likes to move fast through the zones and to just have some more "fun" in it instead, then I would suggest Vector since he got some cool special moves. Yea, thats about it for this section.

Graphics: 9

Well, the graphics are mostly the same like the original so I'll rate it just like how I would rate the original, however, there are of course a few changes in this sonic 1 sprite hack from the original. The first thing you will notice for a change in the graphics is the title screen. Of course, from what you can see in the screenshots for the title screen, Vector is of course there instead of Sonic, but I must say, Vector does look pretty good there. This definitely shows some good graphics for a sega genesis. Also, his sprites look pretty well done. (Well, they are from knuckles chaotix. lol) Another strange thing is that a few of the things in the color palette are somewhat greenish. Mostly for the badniks and some sprites and objects. I have no idea why they are green like this but most other small sprite sonic 1 hacks like this one but with different characters and abilities somehow have the badniks and some sprites just blend in with the main hero in a way with color palette changes. Other than that, the rest of the zones, rings... etc are mostly the same. Thats all for the graphics.

Sound: 9

Of course, the ones who already played or tried out this sonic 1 hack already figured out that this hack has no changes in the Sound effects or music. All the sound effects (Like jumping, collecting rings, hitting badniks.... etc) and all the music in all zones are exactly the same just like the original Sonic the Hedgehog 1 so it gets the same rating like how I would rate the original. The purpose of this hack though, was to play as Vector the Crocodile in Sonic the hedgehog 1 anyways. I actually like the original sounds the best to be honest here. As I have said before, green hill zone, star light zone, and final zone are probably my most favorite background musics in Sonic 1. Well, I really got nothing else to say here.

Addictiveness: 9

I'll really have to admit this, but this sonic 1 hack is pretty addictive alright, mostly thanks to vector's special moves. The air dash to me is just very awesome. It's fun to run through the zone and continue to air dash and jump through the whole zone which just makes you want to keep doing it again and again. This game is very addictive mostly due to it's gameplay like most other sonic games and hacks out there. Vector's air dash move is the type of small move that just makes someone want to keep playing around with it while playing through the game. I really have nothing else to say since that special move is pretty much the only thing I can think of for making this game a bit addictive for me.

Story: 6

Of course, most of you guys who play old sonic games and hacks already know what the worst part of sonic games usually are. So, of course, the story is the worst part here. The main reason the story is the worst part is because it is way too simple. If you actually want to say the story of this sonic 1 hack, it is pretty much, "Dr. Eggman has evil plans! It is now up to Sonic the Hedgehog Vector the Crocodile to stop Dr. Eggman's evil plans before it is too late! Will Sonic the Hedgehog Vector the Crocodile be able to stop Dr. Eggman before it is too late?" And of course, you guys also already know that the story is pretty much exactly the same like the original Sonic the Hedgehog 1. Nothing much really to say except that the story is very simple but the main good thing about Sonic games and hacks is usually the gameplay, not the story. Thats about it for this portion of my review!

Depth: 8

Well, I guess this game does have a decent amount of things to offer. Not so bad and not that amazing. The first thing this sonic 1 hack offers is playing as Vector the Crocodile in Sonic the hedgehog 1 instead of playing as Sonic. The 2nd thing it offers is all of the original zones from the original Sonic the hedgehog 1. The 3rd thing it offers is all of Vector's special abilities and moves, which is the original and well-known spin dash, air dash, and wall climbing. I guess that is a decent amount of things for the game's depth. Sadly, it doesn't have any special options and what not. Oh, I almost forgot one more thing to mention, it has the level select cheat just like the original Sonic the hedgehog 1. To basically get the level select cheat menu, at the title screen, press up, down, left, then right, then A + Enter. Then, you will actually get the level select cheat menu, which is very useful and fun to have. You can select your favorite certain zones you like and then just play it instead of having to be forced to literally start all the way from green hill zone. Pretty much a fun thing to use whenever you really like a certain zone to play with Vector the Crocodile.

Difficulty: 7

I guess the game can be somewhat difficult mostly depending on what zones you are playing. Just like almost all of the sonic games and hacks, there are very easy zones and there are very hard zones. As I have mentioned, the zones are all the same and original from the original Sonic 1 game. Most of you guys who played sonic the hedgehog 1 would of course know that green hill zone is probably the easiest zone to play. Labyrinth zone is pretty much a pain in the head and a very hard zone to complete in my opinion. Scrap brain zone is also a fairly hard zone too. All of the other zones are mostly in between hard and easy to complete. (Well, at least for me and my past experiences in playing these zones) Also, since you have Vector's special moves, they can be an advantage to make things in the zones a bit easier for you in some cases. Like you can climb up the large wall in marble zone and then jump off after you reach the top. It's basically cheating your way through all 3 acts in marble zone just like what knuckles can also do. Also, Vector can spin dash which can help him move through the zones faster and he can use the air dash too. These special abilities can possibly make the zones easier for you to complete in some cases. Well, thats about it for the difficulty portion in my review!

OVERALL: 9

Well, I guess based off all of the ratings for the significant things in this game, this game would get a good rating of a 9.0 since it basically does it's purpose of letting you play as Vector the Crocodile through Sonic the hedgehog 1 pretty well.

Thank you all very much for reading this and I hope you all like my game review! Any feedback, constructive advice... etc will always be appreciated! Thanks and have an awesome day on vizzed! :D
