Streets of Rage 2 - Robocop & ED-209 Featured Review

Streets of Rage 2 - Robocop & ED-209 Review by: tornadocam - 8.4/10

Streets of Rage 2 Robo Cop
Streets of rage two also known as Bare Knuckle II is a popular beat em up game. The game was very popular during the Sega Genesis era. It should be no surprise that several hacks of this game exists. I will be reviewing a hack that lets you play as Robo-Cop the cyborg crime fighter who has a series of his own. I will be comparing this hack to the original game as well as other hacks.

Story: 8

Mr X was defeated by the vigilantes Axle, Adam and Blaze. The city was safe and crime rapidly dropped. However, an outbreak of crime takes the city by storm. Adam is ambushed and kidnapped by X in hopes to lure the other vigilantes in a trap. Mr X has also rebuilt his criminal organization back up as well.  Axle and Blaze get Adam's young brother Skate as well as good friend Max who is a world champion wrestle. Due to the huge outbreak of criminals the vigilantes bring in the cyborg policemen named Robo Cop. Robo Cop sets out to help his new friends and do what he does best take out criminals and their bosses.

Okay this plot is really good it stays with the original for the most part. The only change that is made is the story now fits Robo Cop. I liked how Robo Cop is introduced in the new story. I also think Robo Cop fits well into these type of games. Robo Cop as his name applies is a cyborg cop who has a strong sense of justice. The Vigilantes also have a strong sense of justice. So yeah bringing in Robo Cop was not hard at all and really did not change anything from the original game. I give it a good 8 out of 10.

Graphics and Controls: 8

The stages have not been changed at all. The original game had amazing stages and graphics. Streets of Rage 2 really showed what the Master Drive unit was capable of. It is amazing how the city lights light up, the backgrounds and colors are very well done. This hack keeps a lot of that in place. In another Streets of Rage 2 Hack I reviewed (Mega Man Version) I brought up how the Play Station Mega Man version was used in that game and it made it seem kind of off. Robo Cop actually fits well into the graphics this time. It looks like they used a 16 byte frame to stick him into this game which is what should have been done in the Mega Man Version, Robo's sprites are also nicely done as well.

The controls are mostly good but there are a few minor issues. Robo's controls sometimes seem a little sluggish. I don't know if that is to fit his nature or what. It is not a huge problem and nothing that is going to get you killed. It seems like it occurs more when Robo does a dash the controls slow down a little bit. Thus, the game has good graphics and controls considering it is a hack

Sound: 9

Streets of rage 2 had awesome music and sounds. It was so easy to get tuned in to the amazing sound and actually get knocked out. The enemy sounds are also amazing. I like it how enemies groan when they get knocked out and how your character makes sounds when performing a combo move. This game does not change any of that and still has amazing sound as the original game did. One new sound was added though and that was to fit Robo's heavy duty gun. His gun sounds like a machine gun. The sound it makes is very nicely done and adds more value to the sound. Thus, I give the sound a good 9 out of 10.

Replay Value: 8

When I first saw this game I was like what Robo Cop in a bare knuckle game? I got to play this so I got a hold of the game and decided to give it a try. It was quite fun to play with. I never knew Robo would fit well into this type of game. The way he takes out the bad guys is very comical. Moreover, this hack offers something different as you are playing Streets of rage but you are playing it with a different character. So yeah I give the game an 8 out of 10 this is one you will play again and again.

Depth: 4

Beat em up games are not known for their depth. This game is no exception. There are no secret areas to find, no secret items to collect, and nothing to search for like high depth games. When I think of high depth games I think of Mega Man, Mario, Sonic, Kirby, and Donkey Kong Country. When I think of games that have no depth I think of Puzzle games. There are  some things that keeps me from giving this a rating under a 3. The first being the stages are long and often grouped into sections. That adds not only replay value for depth. You will spend some time getting through the stages. second weapons can be found and collected to use on the bad guys so that adds something. I give the depth a 4 out of 10 rating.

Difficulty: 5

The original streets of rage 2 difficulty depended on who you chose as your character. If you played as one character the difficulty would be much lower or higher depending on who you used. In the Mega Man version the difficulty was not bad at all. So what about this version? Well its not too difficult at all. Enemies will still gang up on you in numbers. In addition, they like to drop from the ceiling to do ambushes. The bosses some of them can be real tough. So chances are you might get knocked out a few times in this game.

However, playing as Robo Cop brings the difficulty down a lot. The main reason is Robo can use his machine gun to mow down enemies before they get to you. He can take out enemies in a hurry too. In addition Robo's dash is very powerful and takes out some of the tougher enemies. Getting back to Robo's gun it really shreds some of the powerful enemies in this game. So its almost like it is comical the way you can take out enemies in this game. Moreover, extra lives are plentiful in this game. Just by chance you do get knocked out you can usually pick up an extra life.

The enemies, ambushes and bosses add some difficulty to this game. But Robo's long range attacks and powerful dash really brings the difficulty down in this game. Of all the streets of rage 2 games I have played this has been the easiest. I think I only got knocked out 3 times in my first play through and it wasn't till the later stages. I give the difficulty a middle of the road rating of 5 out of 10. The game as I stated still has its difficulty spots but it can also be easy at times too.

Overall: 8.4
Streets of Rage Robo Cop edition was very fun to play. I was actually surprised on how fun it was to play. When I first played this my first thought was this is someone's idea of a joke. They have made a game as a joke. My thoughts where proven wrong as this is a good solid hack. The game has a lot going for it but it does have some negatives in it.

The game has a lot going for it. The plot is amazing and it introduces the characters well. The graphics for the most part having been unchanged adds bonuses. The sound was mainly kept except for the added sound of Robo's gun. Streets of Rage 2 had awesome graphics and sounds so it was nice the maker did not change a thing. The replay value in this game is also high.  The game gives the impression it is offering something new and really you are playing a different game. When in reality your playing Streets of rage 2. If the makers wanted to bring something new, show creativity, and give the impression you where playing a different game they get a very high score in that department.

Now the game did have a few issues. The main issue is Robo's controls. The controls as I mentioned are good but when Robo' does his dash the controls slow down. It seemed like I really had to press to do the dash move. It probably won't get you knocked out but if you have a lot of enemies to take out at once it might could cause some delay. The second major was the difficulty. Robo's gun can shred enemies and offers long range attacks it is almost like its unfair in a sense. To some people that would not be an issue. But I like games that offer a little bit of a challenge. Getting to take out enemies before they get to you can make this game easy at times. Bare Knuckle was never intended to be easy. But hey some people might like the game being easier.

Overall I give the game a solid 8.4 rating. I really like the idea in this game. Robo Cop fits well into this type of game. I also had fun playing this game as it offers something new while maintaining the charm the original game had. A lot of things are going well for this game. The two issues maybe minor to most gamers. The controls and lack of difficulty brings the ratting down a little bit. Still to some gamers these are minor issues. You should not let the two issues I brought up deter you from playing this game. This game is fun for ages 10 and up. In fact, you could introduce somebody to hacks playing this game due to the easier difficulty. So the question is would I recommend this game? Yes I would recommend this game for anybody 10 and up. Its a fun game and one you should try. If your an old school gamer like me  you will get a kick out of this game.

Anyway blessings in Christ and happy gaming

This game is cool. No challenge, but loads of fun, definitely if you're a Robocop fan. ED209 is the better player, with more moves (prevents the game become from repetitively boring too soon).
