Knuckles in Bare Knuckle 2
If you are an old school gamer like me you probably played the game known as Bare Knuckle 2 also known as streets of Rage 2. You probably have also heard of a character that debuted in the sonic franchise called Knuckles. Knuckles has become one of the sonic franchises most popular characters along with: Dr. Robotnik, Sonic, Tails and Amy Rose. Streets of Rage 2 was one of the more popular beat em up games in the 1990's. Now you can play Bare Knuckle 2 as Knuckles

Story:8

Three police officers Adam, Axle and Blaze took down the crime boss Mister X. X's organization was supposedly severely weakened. A year later though crime breaks out again. Mr. X kidnaps Adam to lure Axle and Blaze into a trap. Blaze and Axle get Adam's kid brother Skate, and Axles good friend Wrestling Champion Max to take out the crime organization and Mr. X. However they also get help from Knuckles the Echidna to help them along the way.

Okay the story line has been altered some to fit Knuckles into it. I personally like having knuckles in this type of game as it fits his style very well. However, it just seems like something is missing here. While they got Knuckles to help how did the characters reach out to him, and how did they contact him. The possibilities are endless and I would have loved to see that in more detail. Still the story is good so 8 out of 10 sounds right.

Graphics and Controls 8

The graphics are really good in this game. In fact, they are pretty much unchanged. All of the stages maintain their amazing graphics and backgrounds. Streets of Rage 2 had some of the best graphics among the Sega Games in the 1990's. It is amazing that the city themed looks like an actual city. The sprites have changed colors that are still very good. Knuckles graphics are very good in this game and his sprites are good as well.

The controls are pretty much good. Knuckles plays a lot like Axle does in the original game. Now sometimes the controls did seem to change speeds a few times and altered between slow and fast. I noticed this when the game was changing sections. It is a very minor problem and does not really effect the game in a major way. But it is noticeable. So I give the controls a solid 8 out of 10.

Sound: 9

The sounds in this game are amazing and left unchanged. I like the music a lot in this game. It is so easy to get lost in the music and realize you have a mission to accomplish. Some of the tunes are so relaxing. Enemies sounds are the same letting you know a lot of the enemies mean business. Knuckles's sounds are very good and his punches make a sound to let you know you are doing damage to the bad guys. Also when enemies are knocked out they moan and groan which is a nice touch. In fact it kind of adds humor to the game. Thus, I give the sound a solid 9 out of 10.

Replay Value: 9

Getting a chance to play as one of my favorite sonic characters really drives up the replay value in this game. Knuckles is my favorite character in the sonic franchise along with Dr. Eggman (Robotonik). Even though I was playing a hack of Streets of Rage 2. It seemed like the game offered something different and new. I really liked that. I really had fun playing this game. Of all the hacks of streets of rage 2 this one ranks high for sure. So I give the replay value a 9 out of 10.

Depth 4

Well this is a beat em up game and they are not know for depth. When I think of high depth games I think of Mega Man, Mario, Sonic, Kirby and Donkey Kong Country games. Those games have secret paths, branching paths, hidden items, items to find, and power ups to collect. With the exception of weapons Streets of Rage 2 and this hack do not have any of that. So you maybe wondering why do not give this a rating under 4? Here is why, the stages are long. So it does take time to clear a stage as most of them have 3 or 4 sections to them. It takes time to beat this game. To me that counts for something.  I think 4 out of 10 is about right. I mean its not like a fighting game were you have just a match and you move on. On the other hand as I mentioned its not like some of the other games that I mentioned.

Difficulty: 8

The original streets of rage 2 game difficulty was really based on who you played the game as. If you played as Skate in the original game the difficulty would have been a 9 out of 10. Blaze and Axle are balanced characters so their difficulty would have been about a 7. Max is the most powerful character in the original game so a play through with him would have been a 6 out of 10. So now what about knuckles?

Well playing as knuckles does make the game difficult but doable. First of all Knuckles is small despite his attacks being powerful.  On larger enemies you have to jump to get Knuckles to hit them. This can leave you open to enemy attacks while your jumping to punch out a large enemy. This can be a challenge esp in stage 4 and 5's end bosses. It should be noted that Knuckles is not the slowest character but not the fastest character either so don't count on trying to outrun an enemy. Speaking of enemies, the enemies just love to gang up on you in this game. Some enemies will come out of the ground, drop from the ceiling, come out of bushes just to ambush you. Also the enemies love to attack in numbers in this game. Some of them even carry weapons and some of them use vehicles as weapons. The stage bosses in this game can pack a punch, no pun intended, doing lots of damage. A lot of the bosses have multi hit combos.

So why is this game doable and seems like the right difficulty for this game? Knuckles's attacks pack a punch and can do a lot of damage. Also the fact that you can pick up weapons and use them to knock out enemies. This can also help you out if you get surrounded or need to clear out an area in a hurry. Another thing the game helps you out with is extra lives. Extra Lives are easy to find in this game as well as be earned. So you can get a lot of lives in this game. Thus, I give the difficulty a 8 out of 10.

Overall Rating 8.9

Did I mention how Knuckles was my favorite character in the sonic franchise. I guess one reason I liked Knuckles is that I could relate to him. Knuckles is a serious character and takes his purpose seriously. He is also a no nonsense type character. Knuckles is mainly a peaceful guy but when he is provoked he can be excellent and hand to hand combat. He is also a very powerful character. I am kind of like that myself. So when I found out about this game I had to play it. I mean this is a type of game that Knuckles fits in well with. As he is excellent at hand to hand combat.

I really had fun playing this game and it has a lot going for it. First of all, the game is very fun to play and I highly enjoyed it. The game also seems to offer something new. Yes its a hack but it gives the impression your playing a new game and a new character. The sound was left unchanged which is awesome because the original game had amazing sounds to it. The difficulty is about right for this type of game. The controls are mostly good. This is a very solid game overall. I can tell whoever made this put a lot of time and effort into making it. If the make or makers where trying to give an impression your playing a game with a classic character to offer something new. Well they certainly get an A in that department

Now the game did have a few minor issues in it. I want to stress though these issues are very minor and most gamers would not even be bothered by this. The first being while the story is good. I would have liked to have seen how the Bare Knuckle team contacted Knuckles. Did they send him a message, did they visit him, did he just offer to help or something else. The possibilities are endless here. They could have put either one of those possibilities in the plot. The second negative is the changing speeds of the controls. As I stated when you are about to move onto the next section the controls either speed up or slow down for a few seconds. This is normally not an issue because in this game in order to move to the next section you have to knock out all enemies. But it is noticeable at times it did cause me to get a cheap shot a few times. These two things are really the only minor problem with this game.

Overall I give Knuckles in Streets of Rage 2 a very solid 8.9. I had fun playing this game and it is a fun game to play. The negatives that I mentioned probably would not even be a negative to some people. This game is fun for anybody who is 10 years old and up. Basically fun for the entire family. The game is difficult but it is not so difficulty that you would get burned out and turned away from playing this game more.  This game as I mentioned above has a lot of good things going for it. So would I recommend this game? Yes I would highly recommend this game you will not be disappointed. I hope you take time to enjoy this game and that you have fun playing it.

Blessings in Christ and happy gaming

Why didn't they use the Japanese version? They could have called it "Bare Knuckles"!
