Royal Stone - Hirakareshi Toki no Tobira Review by: Totts - 9.2/10

Royal Stone

Today, we will not totally ignore that  it was quite exceptional to find a  role playing game on a handheld. (And no, I certainly do not mean Pokemon.) While this should be a surprising realization now not really for game boy, Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance - especially at the moment, where seemingly every reasonably good SNES RPG on GBA... ported - I refer rather to such relatively unknown and not in this country successful handhelds such as neo geo pocket or Wonderswan (color). Geratenem now probably completely into obscurity even on Sega's handheld with name game gear (the first color handheld of the world at all, by the way.) (Years before the game boy color.) There were some really good role playing. Defenders of OASIS is an example of this, but in comparison with our current candidates Do looks somewhat like Final Fantasy II (NES) in comparison to Final Fantasy V (SNES/SFC): old-fashioned, simple, and negligible. Today we will cover that with "Royal Stone", the successor of the legendary (well, sort of...) Crystal warriors that also for game gear was released and brought fresh wind into the strategy RPG genre, shockingly simple technical implementation and various design but had no particularly large commercial success. Royal stone is the perfection of the CW game principle, with truly impressive technical implementation. The only downside? It was released only in Japan...

I cannot of course little .. Disrespect as Central Europeans, who has started only recently learning the Japanese language, the history... You outline more or less I can but even with my limited Japanese knowledge already. The story takes place in a relatively classic fantasy world, has to offer but a number of surprises and twists. Also, it is less a "classic" setting within the meaning of "simple and easy to understand", because the story has a certain complexity and it a little must think well with great knowledge of Japanese, to completely understand the story in all its facets. At the end it boils "the ultimate evil in-person" (TM) as an opponent in the Act but once again on the, but the variety of its history until that time is more than compensate for this.

The game is on divided into exactly 16 sections, which I'll discuss in the game play section even closer.

With regard to the characters in RS, this part is a little disappointing.
Including hidden characters and elemental, there are good 15 characters you can control, but most of them have up on the text, if you recruit them and possibly a small supporting role in a cut scene no text at all. This is a definite Ah-Ah even with a strategy role-playing game. The character of some NPC ´s in cities and castles is, however, extremely successful and convinced, especially since some of the NPC ´s - very unlike the most strategy-RPG ´s, mind you - quite play a certain role for the big picture of history. The very late you will understand. What is however also positive in a sense, because the character of the heroine (how a CW RS female main character.) is for this reason, extremely well designed and has great depth. There are many flashbacks over the course of history, that explain the background of our heroine and also as it was before the start of the game in captivity and why she was sentenced to death. (As already mentioned, not the very classic harmless fantasy tale.) Perhaps a little "little" content here, but the existing content has all in all draft. And completely on the edge noted: I would have not completely replayed the game if the story would be seemed great to me not even by the few words I have understood properly,. Period.

Game play by Royal stone is a pretty classic strategy role-playing game.
Who ever Shining Force, has played fire emblem, tactics ogre, or something similar, know what it is about. All the others now a moment good beware: in a strategy-RPG one denies a certain number of characters - which is almost always 9 of which you can freely choose 8 in RS - are on cards, divided into many individual "fields", strategic battles, in which the player and the opponent alternately drag. As in RS usually own characters at a time. Almost a very abstract and quite different form of chess, if you would like to use a comparison. As in many other games of this genre, the individual characters have different movement ranges, I.e. They can move different number "fields" for their move. There are now in strategy-RPG ´s often.
