Mega Man 4 Ridley Hack Take 3
Mega Man 4 was a popular video game when it came out. In fact its often regarded as one of the top Mega Man games for the NES. So it should come as no surprise that it has been remade and there are several hacks out there. Mega Man 4 Ridley Hack 3 is a hack of Mega Man 4. So in this review I will be comparing this version of Mega Man 4 to the original game and the other Mega Man 4 hacks out there.

Story: 9

The story of Mega Man 4 Ridley Hack 3 was left unchanged. Basically after Wily plans were shattered again by our hero Mega Man peace ensured. It seemed like all is well. When suddenly a new robot army is released onto the world. Dr. Cossack appears and claims that he has invented 8 new robot masters to conquer the world and defeat Mega Man. He claims he is tired of being in the shadow and this time the world will know his Name. Dr. Light sends Mega Man out to find out who is Dr. Cossack is he really behind this or is an old foe pulling strings? Mega Man heads out to search for these answers? Okay, I really like how the story was left unchanged. Mega Man 4 had an awesome story as it had suspense and mystery. One didn't know who the real bad guy was till later in the game. I really liked that. So I was glad the maker or makers of this game did not change a thing. So I give this version's story the same rating as the original game. A very solid 9 out of 10.

Graphics and Controls: 8

The graphics in this game are amazing. It is better than the other two Ridley Hacks of Mega Man 4. What I really like is how this version uses Mega Man 2's backgrounds for the stages. I really liked that as it was nicely done. The color of the background is very nicely done. Also the games sprites and graphics are very nice too. It really seemed like whoever made this game spent a lot of time working on the graphics and it shows. Having Mega Man 2 like backgrounds shows creativity. The other two Ridley Hacks did have some issues in their graphics. So it was nice to see how this Ridley hacked fixed some of the problems. The stages do not look fuzzy at all. Now, there is a few times were it seemed like a lag occurred especially when moving to a next area. But this was very minor and it did not occur in all stages. The other Ridley Hacks of Mega Man 4 did have some lags in them. While this one has a few its a huge improvement.

The controls have greatly improved from the other Ridley Hacks. Ridley Hack I and II of Mega Man 4 had buggy controls that were very irritating and caused problems. The controls are better. They are not as smooth as the original game, but this is a hack so I'm not surprised. There were a few spots I felt like I was fighting against the controls some. On the other hand it was no were like the previous Ridley Hacks. Mega Man's jumping and firing controls seem to be alright. Due to the improvements and very good graphics. I give the graphics and controls a good 8 out of 10.

Sound: 10

What can I say Mega Man 4 had a very awesome soundtrack. The original game had rocking tunes, and amazing sounds. The sound in this game was left unchanged from the original. The stages still have their original theme. Sometimes I just pause the game and listen to the music its that good. The sounds Mega Man's buster makes when charging sounds really nice. Mega Man's shots sound powerful. The enemies sounds are very good too and their shots make a sound letting you know their shots are powerful. It should be no surprise that I give the sound a perfect 10 out of 10. It doesn't get much better than this folks

Replay Value: 9

The replay value in this game is pretty high. I would rank it just below the original game's. Of the Ridley Hacks I have played so far of the original Mega Man 4. This one is the best. It is a great game and I had fun playing this version. The other Ridley hacks of Mega Man 4 were fun but they had issues that kind of created more problems then fun. The music, Mega Man 2 stages, and being close to the original make this one highly fun to play again and again. I would certainly play this one more times. The only other Mega Man 4 hack that has as high of a replay value is Mega Man 4 simple hack. Thus, I give the replay value a solid 9 out of 10.

Depth: 9

Mega Man games are known for their high amount of depth and this one is no exception. MM4 Ridley Hack 3 has a high amount of depth to it. There are secret areas in a lot of the stages. So one will have to explore every path and search for secret areas. There are several weapons and items to collect in this game. Mega Man 4 (original version) had a lot of depth to it and it was good to see this one have the same amount of depth to it. The stages have been extended a bit in this version compared to the original game. So it is going to take awhile to clear a stage. The good news is if you miss an item you can go back to the stage and get it. In fact, lot of the stages require special weapons to get the item so you will have to revisit every stage. I really like games that have a lot of depth to them. It requires time and makes you enjoy the game even more. I think that is what the makers of this hack were aiming for. Thus, at the end of the day I give MM 4 Ridley Hack 3 a solid 9 out of 10.

Difficulty: 5

If you have read my Mega Man 4 Ridley Hack's I and II reviews you probably noticed how I wrote that those game's difficulty just buried you. Well this game is a nice breather from the other Ridley Hacks. If MM 4 Ridley Hack 3 suffers in anyway its the difficulty. Mega Man 4 was a difficult game and had the right amount of difficulty to it. The Ridley Hacks I and II of Mega Man 4's difficulty was off the charts. I was expecting this one to be another brutally hard game. I was shocked that the difficulty was more like Mega Man 4 simple.

Still, the game did have some tough spots to it. There are some jumps that require skill, creativity and a little bit of luck to make. So you will have to be careful and not land on spikes or fall into a pit. The enemy placement in this game was not bad at all. Some enemies will still gang up on you, and some of them pack a punch when they attack you. But it is nowhere near the placement of the other Ridley hacks of this game. I only found myself getting surrounded a few times. Moreover, the enemies do the same amount of damage as they did in the original game. In the other Ridley Hacks if you got hit 3 or 4 times you were done as hits did 3 times as much damage. This version that is not the case. The robot masters have the same attack as they did in the original game. Now, the difficulty did pick up a beat in the fortress stages. That is because there is more spikes and pits in those stages.

Despite some spots requiring skills and luck to pass. This game was more like Mega Man 4 simple than the other hacks I have played of Mega Man 4. Maybe the makers of this game were trying to not make this version as difficult as their other Ridley hacks. First time players will probably have a hard time playing this game at first. But once you get the hang of it and play through the stages several times it kind of becomes easy. I like games that challenge you and require skill. So while I was kind of glad this game was not as brutal as the other Ridley hacks. I was expecting some difficulty. I want to think I gave the original mega Man 4's difficulty rating a good 8 or 10. The other Ridley hacks got 10 out of 10's due to their difficulty. So what is this versions difficulty rating. I give it a middle of the road rating of 5 out of 10. That is mainly because of the pits, spikes and some of the enemies being tough. But once you play through it becomes easier. The fortress stages also keep the rating from being lower.

Overall Rating 9

Mega Man 4 Ridley Hack 3 was a very good game and it was so much better then its predecessors. A lot of the problems that occurred in those games were fixed. But before I being with the positives. I'm going to start off with some of the negatives.

This game was great but still had its few issues. The controls were so much better but there are a few spots one can feel like their fighting against the controls. Its not so much of a problem as when it happened to me there were not many enemies around. So just be aware of that. Even though a lot of the lags were corrected in this game. There were a few times were lags occurred. The good news was they were very short and minor. Also the lags do not occur all the time like they did in this game's predecessors. The main negative was the difficulty being surprisingly easy. Despite the stages being extended the game is still not that bad. I like games that are challenging and that require skills, creativity, and luck to beat. I'm glad to see the game was not brutal like the other Ridley Hacks. But I was wanting something close to the original game. The difficulty in this game gets easier once you play through it several times. Really it feels like I was playing Mega Man 4 simple. For those that do not know Mega Man 4 Simple is a real easy version of Mega Man 4.

Now onto the positives. This game has a lot going for it. The graphics as I mentioned were nicely done and a huge improvement from the other Ridley Hacks. The sprites are not as fuzzy and the colors are just about right. The sound is amazing. But as I stated it was not changed and kept the original game's soundtrack. The replay value in this game is high. I really enjoyed playing this version and one I would play again and again. I would say I would play this version more than Ridley Hacks 1 and 2 of Mega Man 4. Those games were fun to play but they had a lot of issues too. The depth in this game has been unchanged for the most part. The only change is a lot of the stages have been extended. So you can go awhile before reaching the halfway point. But due to this game not being so difficult its not that bad at all.  I really think the makers of this game were trying to make more attractive than the previous two Ridley Hacks. I think that is why they toned the difficulty down a lot in this game. It really shows how the makers of this game spent time into developing this one.

So would I recommend this game. Yes I would recommend this game. Unlike the other hacks of Mega Man 4. This would be a good one to introduce somebody to Mega Man 4 with. The game can be difficult at first. But as I have stated over again it gets easier as one plays through it. This game is for everybody new players, and old school players like me. I think most players will like this game its that good.  The only other games I might recommend over this one would be the Original. That is because, well its the original game. Mega Man 4 when it came out was special and a hit for Capcom and the NEs. Mega Man 4 Simple is an easier version of Mega Man 4. Those are the only games I would recommend over this one. I had a lot of fun playing this version. It is a great game and would be good for pretty much everybody as I explained above. This is also a game that you will want to play again and again. Thus, at the end of the day. I give Mega Man 4 Ridley Hack Version 3 a very solid 9 out of 10. I highly recommend this game. I hope you take time to discover this game and enjoy it

Blessings in Christ
