Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy Featured Review

Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy Review by: RedHotToddy - 9.2/10

A new legacy is born!

Ah, I have such a big love and such for SCEA, Over the years, they have always succeeded to bring us such awesome platformers like Ratchet and Clank, or even sly cooper! Heck, I have barely even got to see what they have been making for us today! But whatever It Is, It has got to be good! As my love for these guys has never died out! And It all started way back In 2001, I finally got my PlayStation 2, but the worst part is that I did not have anything to play on the system Itself! I just had the console, Until my dad had came up to me one very day in my room and give me this gem of a platformer, I had no idea what I was getting myself into, But whatever it was, I know that It has to be good! And that Is it for today! But anyways, Let's just play this game shall we? This is Jak and daxter the precursor legacy for the PlayStation 2!

Story-8/10
Ah, our big adventure goes off to a calm start on the world of sandover village. This is where all of the action starts! We are introduced to our two heroes, jak, a silent elf like creature, and daxter, his annoying and really talkative friend. But let's get back on topic shall we folks? The two boys live with samos and keira hagai, together the team work together to gather up Eco, which is a source of energy which creates a huge portion of the universe and was founded by the legendary precursors. Now that you guys know jak and daxter's backstory, let's get onto the actual story of the game shall we? One starry night, our two heroes jak and daxter are sailing to the isle of misty island, now before that they set sail here, their master samos hagai had recently told them to not go here, but on well. Jak and daxter are walking in on two people setting up an army of some sorts. The two boys are about to make a run for it, but one of the lurkers there nearly hits jak, jak gets him with a barrel of Eco, but the explosion causes to send daxter into a vault of dark Eco after that! Thus turning daxter into an ottsel! They return to samos, but only to be warned by him that their world is planning to be destroyed by the evil gol and maia acheron, two brothers and sisters who want to rid the land and of all of it's Eco forever and ever. The two boys have now got to stop their plan before it is too late! Together, the duo has to adventure through the world collecting power cells, defeating various monsters, and doing all sorts of other crazy stuff along the way! So yeah, let's just jump into the actual adventure shall we folks? Yes? No? Okay. Let's start this thing guys!

Gameplay-8/10
For the most part, jak and daxter the precursor legacy is a traditional 3D platformer game much in the lines of games like super Mario 64 and banjo kazooie. The player takes the role of jak and daxter as you guide them through more then seven huge worlds and locales, collecting tons of goodies and collectibles, and defeating lots of baddies and monsters! Controls are as explained, Left analog stick moves, Right analog stick controls the camera, X jumps, O spins, Square punches, And Triangle lets you look around freely. The main premise of the game is to run around huge levels collecting power cells along the way in order to gain access to the next level, power cells can be obtained in many ways possible, paying an oracle, clearing out a group on enemies, solving tricky puzzles, and so many more. Now these are not the only collectibles in your quest, you also collect precursor eggs which can also be cashed into oracles for even more power cells, scout flies which reward the player with another one, and so many more to come. A majority of the levels in the game also contain some quick minigames that take some timing and skill, Like capturing fish, Destroying and keeping lurkers from getting in on a man's crops, and I don't really remember much of the others, but oh well! Jak and daxter also collect this magic substance called Eco over the course of their journey, there are many types of Eco, green Eco restores health, blue Eco lets you run faster for a period of time, red Eco increases your attack power for a limited time, and lastly yellow Eco lets you shoot fireballs out at your opponents. Now let me tell you one thing I love about the game the most, and it is the level design! The levels themselves are all connected to each other, where as in super Mario 64 all the levels are split into separate levels (I:E Mario wings to the sky, Ghost hunt) This really saves the tedium of having to start over an entire mission when you leave the mission itself, In this game when you are nearly done with a mission and leave the world where you are playing the level, it will all be there again when you come back! Lastly, there are plent of boss battles to go around through the course of the game (Or at least the end) Such as this dark Eco plant which spits goobers at you, Or this giant powerful robot that guards the volcanic crater.

Graphics-9/10
Wow, just wow, When I first saw the first few videos and trailers of this game, I thought for sure that this game was going to be some blatant wierd looking platformer with no charm or variety what so ever! My thoughts immediatly changed after! This game came out back in 2001, and many many years later, this game looks stunning from start to finish! Each world after the last is just absolutely filled with so much things to do and collect, there are those power cells that I mentioned, there are the precursor eggs which I mentioned as well, And the worlds also contain over 5-8 different tasks to do as well! Which makes exploring through all of their secrets even more fun then before! The levels consist of a sunny island, a forbidden jungle, a dark and gloomy swamp complete with pihranas and other creatures to make you lose all of your sanity the time being, and my personal favorite, Gol and maia's citadel, which looked so big back in 2001, and today the level still looks really really good! Now for the actual character models and such, while they aren't the best models I have seen on any of the playstation 2's platformer games, the game still looks really good! Jak is a wierd looking elf like creature (One reviewer said that he looks like some anime reject) Daxter is your wisecracking and obnoxious sidekick with a mouth that just won't quit, And samos and kiera are also okay as well! Lastly, gol and maia, and they are probably some of my favorite characters from the whole entire series! Too bad that they are never ever seen again, Heck, It's been about 12 years since they fell into that dark eco, I wonder where they are today... The HUD for the game is pretty self explanatory, It displays your health measured by a heart, How many power cells you have collected through the entire game, How many scout flies you have in a level, and well, Yeah, that's it.

Sound-8/10
Yes, SCEA never fails to dissapoint with their music in their platformer games and such, and this is definitely no exception to the rule as well! The music in this game is funky, groovy, catchy, cartoony, you name it guys. Let's just see why I said all of those words though! Each world you traverse throughout the game is complete with it's very own theme song to it and that is really good because BGM is important when making a video game like this. Such levels like the misty island or the citadel of gol and maia are prime examples, Misty island's song is catchy, yet somewhat quiet in the end, and has such a good beat to it. Gol and maia's citadel has you thinking and looking back at all of the trouble that you have went through to finally reach the duo in person, and one of my second personal favorites is the swamp world! It makes you think that you are traveling through a big dark and spooky wasteland all alone with nobody and I say NOBODY to protect you at all (Jak 3 I am looking at you right here right now) Now let's get to the sound effects, well, They are definitely cartoony and fitting to what you do to trigger them! We basically have jak and daxter's footsteps for when they walk, A boing noise for whenever they spring into the air, A thwack like noise for whenever jak dashes, and my favorite sound effect is the one for whenever you grab eco! It sounds so cartoony?and fitting to what you just did! Lastly guys we have the voice acting, and boy is it good! Now I know, I know, At this point in the series jak does not actually start speaking until Jak 2 and onwards, So he does not have an actor right now. But as for the other characters, they are amazing! We have max casella as daxter, Tara strong as kiera, Dee schnider as gol acheron, and Well, I don't know who voices samos and maia, but if you do know, just tell me in the comments below!

Addictiveness-8/10
Ah, this game has always been one of the most addicting and engaging platformers on the playstation 2 for me! And here is why I excactly say that! Well first, let's start with the overall feel of the game! The game feels excactly like what you would expect from a game made by SCEA, the game itself is funny, cartoony, charming, and just offers so much to do and see throughout the time being! Second, It is also the concept of the game as well! Many critics have cited this game as one of the last few platforming games around before the nation was flooded with tons of call of duty and call of duty elite players, same goes with many fans of the series as well. The game lastly feels very rewarding to you as well, As completing even the hardest tasks of the game (I:E Clearing out those pesky critters in the swamp) Will reward you with a funny dance and animation from our two heroes, and that is pretty darn funny to watch as well! I will never forget playing this game with my dad one day and laughing so hard and anxiously at jak and daxter spinning around and dancing their butts off just because they collected a teensy power cell (Okay maybe it isn't teensy, but still) The power cells do actually play A LARGE role in the game (Haha, see what I did there?) And just collecting all of them with the sheer patience and wit feels so rewarding man!

Depth-9/10
Ah, the depth section of this platformer game, and without a doubt one of the biggest aspects that the game itself has to offer for all of it's fans and saviors! Well to start off, the length of this game is one of the big aspects! The game features over 6-10 different worlds and locales to play in, and each one taking over 30 or so minutes just to complete by itself (Depending on if you like to go 100% on your games) So yeah, the game will most likely take you over 4-7 hours to complete in total just because of the game's longetivity and fun factor into It! Second is the amount of collectables and ?such scattered through the worlds! The game features over 100 power cells to collect, and 112 scout flies to obtain, Oh yeah, There are about 1200 precursor eggs to collect throughout the course of the adventure as well, And If I remember correctly, collecting all of the game's power cells will unlock a special ending featuring the main cast of the game opening up this huge rift door thingy, It feels so rewarding! And so does collecting all of those three said collectables as well Huh guys?

Difficulty-7/10
Ah, the game has never really gaven me much trouble has the over games have, but there are still some pretty darn tricky parts to play through as well! And well yeah, I will tell you all of them right now! The first mission that has gaven me some trouble throughout the time being would have to be the farthy's treats mission in the swamp world, Here you must help jak and daxter protect all of their friend farthy's snacks from these lurkers by shooting yellow eco at them, the problem is that the enemies go way too fast, and if even ONE of them touches any of the snacks, then you must start everything all over again! Second mission that has given me trouble is the eco beam connector mission in the forbidden jungle, here you must help jak and daxter connect all of these constellation beams together so that they will all hit some sort of satilliete, The problem is that I could never find the last connector! I looked harder and hard as I can, but nothing at all! So yeah, the game's difficulty is fair throughout the course of the game, but still pretty average none then the less! This set the prime example for the later games of the series (Which I don't really know about reviewing) But I will try!

Overall-9.2/10
So yeah, that has offically been my review on jak and daxter the precursor legacy! What else can be said about it that hasn't already been said by yours truely RedHotToddy? Except that this is without a doubt one of the finest platformers on the system next to it's competitors ratchet and clank and sly cooper? Yeah! But anyways, I gave this game a 9.2 because It is fun, challenging, very VERY lengthy, and the game will just keep you very very busy for all of your precious time being! Heck! This game lasted me throughout the whole entire holiday season when I first got it for christmas! But anyways, this has been RedHotToddy's 140th review, and I will see you guys later!
