Bucky O'Hare (ver EAB) Featured Review

Bucky O'Hare (ver EAB) Review by: bsnowotter - 8.5/10

Fitting, dystopian finish to a treasured science-fiction television saga
Bucky O'Hare the arcade game is a great beat-em-up (arguably a shoot-em-up, just in the style of well-known beatemups) that concludes the animated sci-fi Bucky O'hare series.  Clearly modeled in the style of the excellent Ninja Turtles arcade game and the Simpsons game, this game continues and improves upon the tradition established by those other Konami titles.  In addition to other improvements, the addition of ray guns does a lot to add variety to the jump-kick-the-boss-while-avoiding-the-counter-uppercut formula that got a little pesky if you paid attention to the Ninja Turtles arcade game bossfights.  Adding ray guns really escalated the carnage, not just that the player can dish out but also in requiring the boss and enemy characters to be even more menacing and powerful in order to compete with the player who is now packing heat.

Bucky O'Hare is a brave sci-fi hero bunny.  He and his animal friends must band together and free the other cute animals who have been subjugated by the evilness of a very non-cute villain.  He does this in scrolling stages, taking down hordes of baddies with his ray gun.  And he gets by with a little help from his friends, the 4-player coop in this title is a huge selling point, just like in TMNT and the Simpsons arcade games.

Graphics = 9

The graphics in Bucky O'Hare are bright, cartoony and feature a good variety of baddies, 4 varied protagonists and a vast array of gorgeous scenery.  It goes a long way in a sci-fi game to make the player feel as though they really are going to strange new worlds in outer space, but Bucky's graphics go there, to infinity and beyond so to speak, by also giving the player a connection to the action with character and monster art that is not only good-looking but also steeped in personality.  The graphics connect the player to the world and the characters that inhabit it in a way that should not be overlooked.

Sound = 9

The music in Bucky is top-notch, but what really gets your attention about Bucky O'Hare is the great sound effects.  Once the music sets the mood for carnage, the sound effects really pull you in with laser blasts and explosions that, if you closed your eyes during the game as an experiment in the name of science, would leave no doubt you were in a sci-fi warzone.  Similarly indispensable is the cartoonish voice acting, when one of the many villains cackles at "Captain O'Hare" it will send chills down many a green gamer's trembling spine, and possibly give them nightmares for many nights to come.

Addictiveness = 7  Depth = 6

This game is designed to be addictive, and the varied bad guys and varied scenery (and even varied mission objectives, Bucky for example must rescue slaves in the middle of a level!) all add up to an unusually deep shootemup experience.  The 4 player coop mode adds greatly to the addictive quality of the game because if you go to the trouble of assembling 4 buddies to destroy the evil space empire there is tremendous peer pressure to finish the game and not chicken out first even as the number of quarters required grows ever more expensive.  The only reason I did not rate these scores higher was because on a website like Vizzed that also showcases games designed for the home gamer, that feature even more addicting traits such as collectible cute monsters, leveling up, hidden caves with extra loot to collect, etc etc this has the same relative lack of depth you may expect.  Apart from the fun factor bringing you back for another playthrough at some point, it is unlikely you will spend as much of your life as people on this site have spent on Pokemon or Final Fantasy or something.

Difficulty = 8

Not much to say about the difficulty level of an arcade game, there is a good balance between that feeling that inevitably you will die and put in more quarters while still making the gamer feel they got their money's worth after each investment.  Luckily, the cost of Vizzed is a one-time purchase and you have unlimited quarters so there is nothing I can really say difficulty-wise that should deter you from trying out this game if it's your sort of thing.

Story = 10

The story of Bucky O'Hare really shines.  Like the greatest of science fiction, Bucky O'Hare's universe is a mirror of our own, and the evil and treachery he combats strangely foreshadow today's newspaper headlines, with evil banks too big to go to jail and the incessant bickering of rich politicians while people starve in the streets.  I don't want to spoil anything, but if you join Bucky's crew and assist him in taking down the evil space empire there will be more than 1 or 2 twists and turns along the way, moments where the gamer might say "they did NOT just do that" in disbelief, non-believing the bold steps the makers of Bucky O'Hare the arcade game experience took in bringing a sci-fi epic plot to the gamers' eyes which pulls no punches in telling one of the most chilling and and thought-provoking dystopian odysseys ever committed into rom memory.

Thanks Konami for continuing the tradition of side-scrolling multiplayer violence featuring a body count too high to calculate, and thanks to Vizzed for hosting this game which has become a solid part of our videogame heritage.
