Banjo-Tooie Review by: tornadocam - 9.3/10

Banjo is back (Banjo Tooie
Banjo and Kazzoie are back after their first Adventure.

Story: 9
The plot in this game is pretty much told in the intro cut scenes. It is a dark and stormy night, the heroes from the first game are playing Cards (Banjo, Kazooie, Mumbo, and Bottles). Meanwhile Grunty the evil witch has been trapped under a rock. Her minion Klungo is not able to lift it. Klungo calls Grunty's two other evil sisters. Grunty's Sisters have invented a drilling machine to terrorize the inhabitants of Spiral Mountain and to free Grunty. Mumbo hears the noise and goes out to check. He finds that Grunty has been freed, accept that she is now a skeleton, because she had been stuck under the rock for so long. Grunty spots Mumbo and chases him back to Banjo's hut. Grunty then charges up for a huge spell. Mumbo warns everybody a spell is coming. Everybody gets out accept Bottles who thinks Mumbo was just wanting to cheat. Bottles is killed by the witch. Grunty's sisters take her to their hideout and tell her they have a new machine called BOB. BOB can suck the life out of characters it is aimed out and fill up the tank. Once Grunty has enough souls she can take a shower to restore her original self. Banjo meats Jam-Jars who teaches him and Kazooie new moves throughout the game. Jam-Jars reveals he is Bottles brother. Banjo and Kazooie must go through several worlds, rescue Jinjos, who fled when their village was invaded by the digging machine, and complete several requests. The only way to save Bottles and the others is to use Bob in reverse but to do that they to beat Grunty first. Can the heroes do it this time like they did the first time? I really liked this plot in this game. I thought it was nicely done and it was very creative. After playing the first game I was wondering how would they make the second game, which was hinted at in the first game's ending. Rare did very well creating this plot. The only thing I would have liked to have scene maybe is the plot broken up into cut scenes instead of being so long. But a very good creative plot overall.

Graphics: 10
The Graphics in this game were awesome. The worlds have lots of color and very good backgrounds. The Jungle level is made to look like a jungle village. My favorite world was the mine level. The graphics were just amazing in that level. The mountain around the mine's entrance looks like a real mountain or a mountain that you would see in a movie. Also the shiny pieces in the mine were also a nice touch they way they sparkle. The ocean stage was also very colorful and was done nicely. The sprints in this game were very awesome. I really like how the sprints shine when you are attacking. In addition, the controls in this game were also smooth. Not one time does Banjor or Kazooie feel sluggish at all. Rare really knew what they were doing in making the controls of this game. I also found there to be no lags in this game. Thus, graphics do not get much better than this and I give the graphics a perfect score.

Sound: 9
Banjo Tooie also had a very good sound track. Some of the worlds had awesome music. My personal favorites were the mine level, the ocean level, and the ice level. The music in those stages really fit the themes nicely. I often just like to stand there and listen to the awesome music in those stages. The sounds of the game are also good. The characters had very good sound. Kazzoie has a good sound when she is wearing special shoes and Mumbo has an awesome sound when he is working his magic. I also found that some of the enemies had great sounds too, the sound's they make while attacking are hilarious. The eggs which are used as ammunition also have a good sound. The ice eggs really crackle when they hit something. I find that sound to remind me of a cold winter day. The fire eggs make a burning sound. It causes some enemies to run around screaming. The grenade eggs make an explosion sound when they hit letting the player know they are doing damage. The only problem I have with the sound is one world could have had a better theme. I find the cloud level's theme to  sound like its out of place. It is kind of dull and I thought I heard a tingle in that level but I'm not sure due to there being a lot going on in that stage. Thus I give the sound a good solid rating of 9/10.

Addictiveness and Depth: 10
Banjo Tooie is fun to play. I often replay this game as much as I do the first game it is just so good. The levels are nicely done, and so is the backgrounds. Banjo Tooie also had a lot of depth. There are jiggies to collect and that requires revisiting worlds. The jiggies are needed to advance to more worlds. The game also has lots of side quest to complete. In addition, there are several things to do in each stage such as collect honey combs, get jiggies, and complete quests as well as defeat bosses. In fact, they are also secret areas that need to be found as well. So Banjo Tooie takes a while to beat as it is a very long game. It is a good thing you can save your game. I really like games that have a lot of depth. The depth in this game kind of reminded me of another series that had good depth. While comparing the depth of this game I found that this game reminded me a lot of Legends 2. Both games were pretty long, took time to beat and the depth just made them fun to play over again.

Difficulty: 7
The Difficulty in this game was toned down from the first game. In the first game you had lives so if you died you lost a life. Not in this game there are no lives to lose. If you die you just go back to the checkpoint. The enemies in this game are for the most part not a huge problem. Sometimes they can hit you from behind but it is rare you will get cornered in this game. Now this game is difficult in other ways. First of all, the quests can be hard to complete as some of them the player has to race or defuse bombs in a short time so that is hard. The jiggies in this game have to be earned and Rare really makes you earn them too. Some of them require creativity and skill to get. In addition, they often requirere-visitation of worlds to beat. The bosses in this game can be a problem. A lot of them have several ways to attack you and they often get spammy with their attacks so that adds some difficulty. Banjo Kazzoie was quite difficult due to having lives. Also the items often required you to beat the clock. There was a few beat the clock challenges in this game but nothing like the first game. Do not get me wrong Banjo Tooie is a difficult game and will challenge you. It is just not that difficult when compared to the first game because you do not have any lives to worry about losing in this game. Plus unlike the first game you have more special items to help you so that takes the difficulty down. Thus, at the end of the day I give Banjo Tooie a 7 on difficulty.

Overall: 9.3
I really liked this game I think it is up there with the first game. The worlds in this game are nicely done. As I stated my favorites were the mine and ocean stage. There is a lot of stuff to do in this game and a lot of stuff to win or collect. Banjo Tooie I want to think was one of the last hits for the Nintendo 64. I want to think this game came out in 2000 maybe 2001. I remember playing this game at my friends house and that was in 2001. When I got a Nintendo 64 this was one of the first games I picked up. I had so much fun playing this when I was younger. I like games that have a lot of depth in them. So this game having that really boost my rating for this game. I also liked how the Banjo series brought something new to Nintendo. Nintendo had Mario games and Donkey Kong games. Mario and DK were pretty well known. The Banjo & Kazzooie series brought something new to the table. So as for recommending this game. Yes I would recommend this game. It is a fun game to play, it requires skill and creativity to beat this game. In fact, If anybody is new to the Banjo series I would recommend playing this game before the first one and here is why. The first game is very difficult so players that get frustrated easy might want to play this one first. This is the second game, but it is a good one to learn the controls of Banjo as well as Kazzoie, and learn the moves. I will be honest I played this one before I played the First one. Overall I give this game a good solid rating of 9.3

Banjo-Tooie Game Description

After two years under the rock, Gruntilda is finally set free from her death bed by her two sisters. As nothing but a skeleton, Grunty and her sisters plan a way of curing her looks by sucking the life out of the land so as to restore her body to its old self. On hearing this news, our two champs Banjo and Kazooie with the aid of Mumbo set out to stop the evil plan and seek revenge for the passing away of Bottles the mole.

In this sequel to Banjo-Kazooie, you can play as the two main characters (as well as Mumbo) just like before, although they can now separate, helping them get to even harder areas of the land. You must collect jiggies to open new areas (much like the original) as well as learn 40 new moves to help you get along.

And much like another Rareware title, Donkey Kong 64, you can play four-player minigames that range from first-person shooters, bumper cars, and soccer (or something like that).

Banjo-Tooie Cheat Codes

You must type in the word ''CHEATO'' before all of these codes. To get them without collecting the pages first, type in ''CHEATO'' followed by spelling the code backwards

* You can get this from Madame Grunty's fortune telling tent in Witchyworld, but the probabilities of it coming up are very low. Just enter the code to get it if you grow impatient with entering the tent over and over again. You must, however, spell it backwards. (CHEATOYGGIJTEG)
** Look behind Master Jiggywiggy in his temple and answer the riddle to access this cheat, or just type in the code backwards to get it. (CHEATOGNIKTSEN)
*** After finding the two secret eggs (Blue, Pink) and returning them to Heggy, you'll gain this code. If you don't want to find the eggs first, just type the code in backwards. (CHEATOGNIMOH)

Comments for Banjo-Tooie

The only way anyone has mentioned to get past that bug is to use a different simulator, but in the "Mupen64Plus", I can't edit the controls, which are terrible, and "MAME/MESS" won't load the game for me. Vizzed, could you just fix the Mupen simulator?
BlueJackal 96 08-25-18 - 05:25 PM
Unfortunately, I can't get past World 2, because the fire egg button that opens the gate to the theme park won't respond to fire eggs. I've tried all the obvious solutions to getting past the bug. There are other bugs, but this one kills the game for me.

Epic sequel. A darker, more mature & even more personal story than BK, more challenging but not frustrating (except Canary Mary),and mostly because Banjo & Kazooie have way more abilities and transformations in this game.
