Well recently I came across a thread about the new XBOX ONE X or S that is coming out and it was discussed about better graphics and 4K graphics display now that got me thinking just because the console your buying can support 4K graphics, can your television support 4K graphics?Think about people really go out and buy the latest consoles on the premise that the console has the latest graphics capabilities but nobody has ever stopped to think hmmm just because the console has 4K capabilities doesn't mean my television can properly display the 4K graphics put out by the console.

So my question is which do you think is more critical when it comes to displaying games on consoles with the maximum graphical output, the graphical output of the console itself or the graphical output of the television?

Neither is more critical; they're equal.
As you said, it does me no good to run an Xbox One X or PS4 Pro on a 1080p TV (except for HDR enabled TVs), as the added output from the system is wasted. Trying to run 4K games on a 1080p TV is like trying to pour a gallon of water into a cup -- everything exceeding the limit is just lost.

On the other hand, owning a 4K TV doesn't enhance the graphics of your 1080p games, because 1080 is 1080. The only way your 4K TV is going to boost 1080 game graphics is if it's an upscaling TV (which do exist).

So if you don't own a 4K TV, then investing in a 4K console is pointless. They try to say "It's good for gamers that haven't upgraded to a 4K set too, because of the HDR"... yeah I'm not dropping an extra $400 on a Pro or $500 on a One X just to get HDR effects.
This is why I think the upgraded consoles in this generation were silly. Yeah they made a profit, but most gamers aren't able to benefit from them yet. Wait until 4K is the standard, and then we'll have something.

Basically exactly what Eirinn said.. And don't forget Sony are one of the main creators of 4k TV's... Microsoft probably just went to 4k as well to make sure that it wasn't a market point that Sony had over them.

It's pretty much still in the position that VR is honestly... Like the technology is there but honestly unless you have the highest end gear.. Or are just really really picky about graphic fidelity or loading screens.. Or fps..... then you probably won't even notice a significant difference.... Wait a couple of years for the technology to be common place.... (if it even gets there the concept of 4k might flop due to technological improvements anyways) and they'll be cheaper, more reliable and then perhaps maybe you'll notice it more

Also just as a heads up it's not precisely new for companies to boast about different things.. Heck look at mobile phones... first people focused on size... and then it went to camera quality... and then it went to apps and now it seems on screen size...  A lot of those things don't really improve the phone... if you can still ring or text someone on it... it's still doing it's primary objective well.. Who cares if it can use facebook... or any other app that is hip with the kids
