I wanted to know if there are any differing opinions on whether or not you really are what you eat.

It makes sense to eat poorly and be in poor shape, but personally, I eat trash day in and day out and I seem to be doing well. Not overweight or gaining weight, not having any medical issues or anything of the sort, yet I still eat like a goblin.

How do you feel about the balance between diet and health? Does it matter to you? Are you like me?

Well to answer the question simply... Yes you are what you eat.

The difference lies in what our bodies does with the fuel given to it... Will it absorb more salts than other people, will it absorb less fats... will it produce more or less excess waste. Inherently we are what we decide to eat. However due to everyone having different genetic code (unless you have an identical sibling) the effect of what it will have on your body is different.

Everyone should eat accordingly to their own bodies functions.... Which obviously is a lot easier said then done. Especially if your taking stuff like medications and the like that can alter the metabolism without intending to and the such. I guess you'd probably be considered fortunate to have a metabolism/body like that honestly.

As for my diet, I also eat like a goblin. Mainly due to the fact I don't trust my epilepsy enough to cook hot meals.. So I mostly eat sandwiches and junk food... and since I've started taking the medication I am on now.. I've put a lot of weight on. Honestly speaking I'd much rather be overweight than constantly having seizures... so it works out for me

Finally I am not like you... most people are not... welcome to the joys of diversity and genetics I guess.

Your diet is most certainly linked to your health. Many studies show this.

I will also point out that it's common for young people to eat like trash and not gain weight, but that doesn't mean that you aren't doing harm to your body. Heck a lot of people in their teens/20s eat like trash...but continue to do that into your late 20s or 30s and see how well that works out for you. Especially if you aren't getting regular exercise.

Some of the worst health problems that can result from a poor diet often go unnoticed until it is too late.

Personally, when I was younger, I was always quite slim, no matter what I ate. I was pretty physically active, although I didn't do regular exercise. Little did I know, I had a genetic predisposition for high cholesterol which ultimately contributed to a massive heart attack at age 40.

Luckily for me, I was otherwise quite healthy, and I survived and have recuperated very well. But, my advice to everyone is to watch that cholesterol intake and to have lab work done to monitor your cholesterol levels.

Not always, some people have endocrine problems and genetics. This can make them gain weight no matter how healthy they eat. They are quite a few conditions that cause weight gain so it is not always about the food.

You also have to look at chemicals in food such as preservatives and artificial stuff has been linked to weight gain.

My ancestors ate bacon, other types of pork, and beef everyday. Yet a lot of them lived to be in their 80's. The main thing was they worked in the farm, garden and yard everyday so they burned it off.

Now with all this being said if you eat a lot of junk food and do not exercise then yeah bad health could be a result

Not all the time, it really depends on the person. Not going to lie a bad diet won't help anything, but I do feel that you can be too healthy. I've heard of overly healthily people getting the smallest illness, and because their body isn't used to anything bad, it has nothing to fight it, and they die. It's all about balance. It's okay to go to a buffet and pig out now and again.

Honestly, to me the balance between diet and health is arbitrary. I don't really care about it.

Why should I spend so much time thinking about what I'm going to eat versus the hundred other things I could be doing? Like, for example, heading out to hang out, or reading a book and focusing on my education.

There's so much news about eating healthy all the time, but why?

In the long run It depends on what kind of food you are referring to "trash". I think the chicken taquitos that I buy from the store are "trash" because they are fried but they are loaded with protein and calcium. The true answer to your question is the so called "experts" really do not know which foods support optimal functioning of the human body. Nutrition in humans is studied along extremes the two most common that come to mind is being overweight and being under nourished, which oddly enough does not refer to the study of skinny people gaining weight but rather the phenomenon of overweight individuals not having enough proper nutrition because their diets are not varied enough to include what experts would call "good" food. In my opinion unless something is poisonous or shown to cause cancer there is NO such thing as good food or bad food. The idea behind good food and bad food is a billion dollar industry so I do not think it will go away any time soon ( think of all the ridiculous fad diets that you have seen). When it comes to diet the the most important things to remember is don't eat more than you need and have a lot of variety in your diet. From your original post I highly suspect that you eating like a goblin probably as something to do with needing a large caloric intake. Our culture is so obsessed about weight that people feel free to comment on how much you are eating and what you weight. I remember in college I would get comments on the "ridiculous" amount of food that I would eat. It was y habit to load up seven to eight plates at every meal and eat them all.....I weighed 111lbs. I was a strength trainer, a runner, and I got more stuff done in one day then most people get done in a week ( I am a high energy individual) I needed those calories desperately especially if I was going to see any muscle gains. So to answer he original question bad diet does not necessarily equal bad health because as long as you are not overweight, are getting the calories that you need, and getting the variety that you need to get your essential nutrients there is actually no such thing as a bad diet. Don't let people shame you for what your body needs to eat even if people think that you are not eating "healthy enough".

You can eat like trash and still be physically strong if you work out muscularly and cardiovascular.

For some people it is an issue, and for some people not. Also for some people it is a gain to eat a lot.

While it doesn't entirely equate to bad health on its own, it is definitely a large contributing factor. Add in other factors like a lack of exercise, unfortunate genetics, and a generally sedentary lifestyle, then you have a seriously bade case of poor health on your hands.

As Jordan stated, diet is most definitely linked to a person's health and well-being. Science has proven this to be true time and time again--even the old saying "You are what you eat" still holds true.

Altogether, diet doesn't equate to poor health all on its own. You can eat a Whopper each morning for breakfast (although you really shouldn't) and still maintain good health through exercise and being active. While poor diet and eating habits can definitely result in bad health, isn't solely responsible and can definitely be curbed by making adjustments to other areas of a person's lifestyle.
