The question burning into my mind is:

Was the USSR a legitimate communist state?

No matter who I ask I will be given different answers.
Those who claim to be Communists say it wasn't
Those who claim to be Capitalist say it was.
Those in between say it shared traits, but wasn't "True communism" or say it shared traits and thus was a failed attempt at communism.

Time to put the debate to bed once and for all.

Was the USSR communist?
Was the USSR a failed attempt at Communism?
Was the USSR just not a representation of Communism at all?
Or do you have your own opinion?

The USSR tried to be mostly communist. I think, if we're working of a purist definition, and my God you people are sticklers for the definition, that the USSR was communist in theory but was a state socialist nation in execution.

Lenin seized power in 1917 and brought his Bolshevik party to the head of the table in Russia. But, if you didn't follow Russian history in school, central planning wasn't implemented for another 12 years and the nationalization of the economy and industrial output didn't show up for 13 more years. Until that time, Russia was mixed, with capitalist elements.

Communism is not only an economic theory but a political one. The USSR had iron control of the government and they enforced their Party politics up until political openness happened in the mid 1980s. The Party removed religion as best it could, it called for no private ownerships whatsoever, and took away personal choice like education.

A socialist economy allows for private ownership of property and manufacturing. A socialist economy can exist with or within the framework of capitalism or democracy. A socialist economy allows for freedom of choice, like religion or education.

The USSR took steps to ensure none of that was available to her people.

The USSR is one of the best examples of how Communism works (or doesn't) in the real world.

It was communist. Everybody said it was. Lenin said it was. Stalin said it was. Gorbachev said it was. There is literally no reason you should think they were anything but communist.

Yes it was Communist. Lenin got his politics and idea for the USSR from Karl Marx's Communist Manifesto. Stalin was worse then Lenin. The USSR seized peoples businesses, farms, industries. Stalin was the most brutal of his great purge and over 30 million people were executed. Also those that disagreed, practice a religion, or where political opponents were executed. After Stalin several USSR leaders continued these policy's until the 1980's. So yeah the USSR was classical Communist
