Flash back to when you are a child in the 90's. You're young, have no idea how horrible the world is, and you are a gamer! You are not the greatest gamer at the time so you decide to boot up some Point and click games from Humongous Entertainment.

What I am saying here is I loved these games. As you can no doubt tell from my review of the PlayStation review of You Are What You Eat, I breathed these games in all their glory. First of my loves as a child was Freddi Fish. This was my favorite series in the library, especially this game. Haunted Schoolhouse Mystery. This is pretty much a love letter to Scooby Doo, only toned toned for younger eyes.

I played the living daylights out of this game. I explored every possible nook of this game, and seen everything it has to offer. I got different trap plot coupons and pretty much explored the underwater world.

This game was my favorite in the series, but I really liked them all. I have the most memories of playing this game before or after school and my heart and soul cried when the disk finally crashed and it became unplayable.

But why is it good? I mean most of this is my opinion and most of this review is from nostalgia anyway. Find out in this review!

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Graphics: The game looks great and has that 80's charm from things like Don Bluth or something. It's still retro, but it brings a smile to a kid or nostalgic adult.

Sound: The songs, and sounds are fantastic. I at one point had a CD to this game, with songs and stuff not featured in the game. (or I never found them) This has the best soundtrack in the series

Addictiveness: As stated before, I was hooked on this game. I would play this till my bedtime occurred, before school (albeit rarely) or just about anytime. I got pretty much everything. All plot coupon occurences, scenes, clickables, everything. I explored every possible layout. I kept coming back to it and scratched the disc further. I played this game so many times and so often, that the disc stopped working from overuse. The game was just open to exploring and made a fantastic escape from reality.

Story: Freddi and her faithful, slightly egotistical and annoying friend Luther are on their way to school for the beloved Show and Tell. Freddi doesn't have anything to share (maybe she just loves life or something and doesn't focus on material gain) but Luther has his prized Super Action Commander action figure (or something) to show off to excited children. But when the two show up, they find the teacher AND the students hiding. (not very well though, they come out of hiding to tell our heroes this... well the students do, the teacher is likely trying to corral them into not venturing off) so apparently a nasty ghost is scaring and stealing toys from the helpless little fishes and making an moderate annoyance out of the situation. Classic Scooby Doo setup. We have to build a trap to catch the ghost and split up for clues.... oh wait, they stick together.

Depth: Like I said, this game is huge. The game is short and easy, but like every game in the series, things are randomly generated. Unless you have mediocre luck, every time you start the game, you are bound to get a different trap set up and goal. I got everything over a period of 6 years old to 26. This game has a lot to offer, see, and do. The songs are catchy (stupidly so) and the clickables amusing and abusive (one can just click the mouse to see armies swim out and animations overlap)

Difficulty: What difficulty? This is easy. As a kid, you might not know what to do, and maybe I was smart, but I never had a problem with this game. I would just explore the world and do about a million things if I had no idea what to do at the time. This game is meant for six year olds. It wasn't mean to cause exploding brain syndrome. Chances are, you can easily complete this game in about 20 minutes if you skip cutscenes and know exactly what to do.

Final Thoughts: Out of the five main games in the series, this game was easily one of my favorites as a kid. Some parts scared me as a kid cause I was naive and innocent and had generally no idea what was going on. But I kept returning to the vague underwater town and kept exploring every possible outcome. I would then brag to my clueless parents about the game. Not in the "I did something cool" way, but the "How does this work?" kind of way. I was curious about how discs worked. Every time I came home from school, I would play it. When the disc blew up, I cried and then the disc mysteriously vanished into thin air, and I couldn't find it. I can't find any of the copies I once had as a kid. I don't remember selling them.

I don't have it on Steam, but I do have it on Scumm downloaded from Iso Zone (shh ) and it was a blast from the past. Whether or not you are the recommended age rating or an adult with absolutely all the time in the world, this game was my life for just about my entire childhood. I had the coloring book, CD, and activity booklet, and I absolutely enjoyed this piece of childhood innocence.

Have the money? Buy it off Steam to relive that innocence. Do whatever it takes to relive this moment of your life. I have some memories of my own to relive and they never go away. Play a game (any game) to death in childhood, those memories last until your dying day. It's a mystery as to just how this works (to me) but I will never forget my time helping a bunch of strange fish get their toys back. I will never forget Freddi or Luther or any of the colorful characters in this strange, nameless city. This isn't the best game in the library the company did, but it is my favorite in the Freddi Fish series. It will be my personal favorite for the years to come.
