I'd like to take time from the normal hubbub of music, and talk about the creators of it! Songwriting takes a LOT of skill. Finding an idea, making words, and then getting notes to compliment the message. This all takes a lot of time, and is therefore one of the hardest arts, using words to paint a picture, and cram it into a song roughly 2-10 minutes long. You could go to the classics, like Bach, who would make pieces 2 hours long, but these are many songs meant to tell a longer story. I want to talk about individual songs... Not from larger pieces  of work.

I was watching some of Nerdwriter1's videos on his youtube... I saw a very interesting one, it was titled, "Why Bob Dylan won the Nobel." Or something similar to that. He got me thinking what makes a song good? Is it's the artists' ability to sing? To play music? Words? What? I personally think that it's the ability to tell a story. The best songs, or at least most popular songs, are story songs. Simon and Garfunkel, their most famous song, Sound of Silence, tells a story. Led Zeppelin Stairway to Heaven, tells a story, Lose Yourself, by Eminem... Guess what? Tells a story. The best artists, aren't necessarily good singers, or instrument aficionados. Bob Dylan wasn't the best guitarist, and he wasn't a good singer. His voice was froggy, and he didn't have good range either. But, he influenced MANY artists... His best song, in my opinion, is All Along the Watchtower. If you follow it, it tells a story of a Prince, Thief and a joker. If you look at the beginning and the end, it virtually circles all the way around, making it start where it ended. But, you've reached a full story. It's genius!

So, what makes a song bad? Well, that my friends is up to interpretation... objectively, there is no bad song. (As much as I hate to say that, sadly, it's true.) Now, you are probably thinking, why do I want to talk about bad songs in a tribute to songwriters? Well, I want to talk about the laziness of many songwriters out there now. They struggle to talk about relevant topics, and instead talk about Marijuana (and it's host of pet names) Girls, and Sex... This is down to nothing other than laziness... They don't feel like taking their time to construct a masterpiece... and instead go for a top ten song, that'll get a lot of radio play time. This makes much of music just a big mess of songs that no one will remember 10 years from now... Possibly just getting a slight revival in older generations for nostalgia. But, new generations won't listen to it.

So, to close... Songwriting is AWESOME! Please take time to appreciate people who put time into their songs! Making a story, and a song that'll last a long time, rather than a hit that will make the millions of dollars but has no skill in it's composition! That's my thoughts at least! Anything to add? Something you think I completely missed, or am wrong about! Feel free to talk about it!
