Graphics: 7/10 The graphics in Grand Theft Auto seem somewhat bland to me, which is why it is receiving a 7/10 in this category. Graphics like explosions were not made very well and look like they were just clip-art that was copy-pasted into the game. However, the graphics are definitely very colorful for a game with such dark tones. One thing I like about the graphics is that they are very clear most of the time and there were little to no points where I couldn’t tell what was happening on my screen. Overall the graphics are very crisp and clean. The only complaints that I have are that the graphics are kind of bland, and buildings can sometimes look wavy and distorted if you get too close to them, but neither of these two things spoil the overall gameplay.

Sound/Music: 9/10 Music and sound effects are definitely one of the stronger areas of this game, and if you play it, you can really tell how hard they worked on them. The game has 7 radio stations that can be listened to when driving in a vehicle. These radio stations play music that was composed specifically for the game and ranges from techno to classical music. the sound effects are very well made and definitely appropriate for the game. For example, if you hit someone with your car or steal their car, they will shout curse words at you. Obviously I can’t say exactly what they say because vizzed is family friendly, but you get the idea. There are also small sound effects that may not be noticed such as car door opening and closing, footsteps, and car engines. These don’t necessarily add to the game, but they definitely add very well to the realistic atmosphere that the game tries to create.

Difficulty: 7/10 Grand Theft Auto, overall is not a very hard game. However, there are certain aspects that make the game harder than it needs to be. Control for example, was very difficult for me to adapt to, leading to some challenging situations. I am going to be taking some points off for control difficulty. Some of the missions are also fairly challenging. Most missions get you wanted by the police, which can be very difficult considering the fact that it only takes ONE HIT to kill you in this game. One hit and you’re dead meat. You only start out with five lives to begin with, but you can find more in each level. Unlike Body Harvest, another game made by the same company, this game does allow you to save outside of a checkpoint, gets rid of a lot of unneeded difficulty. Grand Theft Auto is not a hard game, and the difficulty is paced for the most part, but I have to take points off for the difficulty of the controls, which is why it receives a 7/10 in this category.

Depth: 9/10 Grand Theft auto is a surprisingly deep game for it’s time and there is definitely a lot to do in terms of depth. If you want, you can choose not to do any missions and just roam around the map. There are 3 well-sized maps that can be explored entirely tho your heart’s content. When this game was released, this type of gameplay was almost unheard of. There are also many ways to make money such as blowing up vehicles, killing people, and having shootouts with the police, among other wholesome activities. There is also, of course, a large variety of vehicles to choose from in the game. I mean come on, the game’s called Grand Theft Auto! What did you expect? These vehicles range from normal, average cars, to fast and luxurious cars, and even to military vehicles such as tanks. There are also a wide variety of missions that can be performed in levels. All in all, Grand Theft Auto was one of the deepest games of it’s time in terms of content.

Story: 5/10 There really is no story to Grand Theft Auto. You pretty much pick your character, (and name them if you want to), you’re plopped into the world of the game, and you start making money. The story, if you can call it that, just revolves around the player and their criminal endeavors. That’s really it as far as story goes. Not much to say about this category at all.

Gameplay/Controls: 8/10 The gameplay in Grand Theft Auto is very nice, and is definitely able to create some memorable experiences. The controls, however are a different story. Being a player of mostly later games in the Grand Theft Auto library, I found the controls in this game incredibly difficult to adapt to. For example, If you’re walking forward, the controls for left and right are normal, but if you’re walking backwards, they’re reversed. I can’t really explain it very well, but if you’ve ever played the game or any game like it, you know what I mean. Another thing weird about the controls is that you need to press the X button at all times to move. I can forgive this, However, because the game was one of the first of it’s kind. Other than that, the controls are normal and make sense for the most part. One funny but useless feature is that if you press R2, you can make your character fart and burp. Now onto the gameplay. Players can choose between 8 different characters, four male and four female: Travis, Troy, Bubba, Kivlov, Ulrika, Katie, Divine, and Mikki. Players also have the option to name their character, and if they input the correct name, it acts as a cheat code. The game is presented from a top-down viewpoint which was a good choice for the game as it makes it somewhat easier to control. Missions can be accessed by answering payphones and can also be accessed by entering vehicles owned by the various crime bosses in each level. There are three levels in the game, Liberty City, Vice City, San Andreas, and the goal of each is to reach one million dollars by doing criminal activities and missions. Outside of missions, the player is free to roam the map and go wherever they want, which at the time, was a feature almost completely unique to Grand Theft Auto. Definitely a lot to say about this.

Overall, Grand Theft Auto was an okay game at best. It’s not much to look at today, but it was definitely a very large stepping stone in the Video Game industry, earning it a final score of 7.8 and making it a must-have for any Playstation owner.
