Does anyone remember when games were hard? When you played them, and losing didn't make you rage quit, but actually kept you coming back for more? I miss that. a lot of games I've played from the N64 onward just won't progress with their game overs, or even keep them the same. They're, it doesn't feel rewarding when you finally beat them, and I find that to be a huge problem. Twilight Princess in the Zelda series for example. It was greatly disappointing to find out that most enemies would only deal a quarter heart of damage till the very end of the game. At least some enemies start dealing half a heart of damage instead. Quit different from the original NES Zelda's attitude of "Oh yeah, let's put 10 centaurs on the screen that deal 2 hears of damage each with really fast projectiles! har har!"

Yeah. . . game overs are. . . not always progressing well. XP But we do see some other more classic games striving to bring back the value of difficulty. Skyward Sword was actually one of them! Freedom Planet is an indie title that definitely falls into this category.

So what do you think? Games are to easy today, and we need to progress in our game overs? Or do you like most games today how they are?

Sword legion : It really depends on what games you are playing. One should also take into account that games were often made unfairly difficult on purpose in the past as it acted as a way to add length to a game due to the technical constraints at a time. Even so there are many games that are very difficult and even use it as a selling point, the Dark Souls games are a prime example (or really anything produced by From Software). As is games like FTL, Bayonetta, DMC series among others. Most games today feature multiple difficulty modes too that can really add challenge to a game. Heck there's even an entire genre for difficult games in the form of "roguelikes" in which the concept is based around perma death and being extremely challenging in general.

I think the reason you're getting the impression that games are getting easier is in part because you're getting better at them and because you're choosing to play less difficult games. When it comes to Nintendo franchises like Zelda, Mario and Pokemon many of them are also marketed towards a younger demographic so it makes sense that they wouldn't want to make them too challenging. The hardcore fans who have stuck with the series for a long time and crave challenge is after all still a relatively small part of consumers.

Other than that there is also the fact that the gaming market is much more broader today and developers want them to appeal to a wide range of people. So some games are made intentionally easy so to be accessible (the mobile gaming market, and mainstream franchises like CoD are examples of this) in other words, you are correct that games being difficult is not necessarily the norm anymore. Challenging games definitely aren't hard to find for those who look though.

Yeah I remember those days.....and still do! Playing games you like to me it made me very stronger in a way you know? There are times I thank myself for growing up with games because of how it helped me in lots of ways. Things are a little different, but I sure do know that there are games which are still hard to play which people keep buying on. It depends though things won't always stay the same forever the games have to progress and adapt to the new ways of the future to keep up, and to make people happy as well.

I must be a cream puff because I just never have gotten the idea that more difficult = more fun. I like games that can be a challenge at times, but as long as I enjoy the gameplay mechanics, I'm good. In fact I don't like games to be hard unless I choose for them to be by selecting a higher difficulty, because I like being able to just go through it and experience the whole game and take it all in. I don't play for challenge, I play for the experience of traversing the new areas, seeing all of the sights, exploring and following the storyline through (in games that have a decent enough one to care about).

Idk. Games have always been about adventure to me, not difficulty or struggling. That's just me though, and I get that everyone plays for different reasons. As long as we can all respect each other and our preferences then I'm good. Even though your view is wrong. Jk

And I have to agree with Zlinqx that what you play has a big impact on how hard it is. And thankfully some games still offer difficulty select.

I prefer games that has the difficulty rise as the game progresses. I think the game that does the best job of doing this is Freedom Planet, like you said. It started out easy, then got a bit harder, then you're like OMG. I will say I feel some, not all, older games are harder than games today. However, there's also a possibility that we think that because most games we play nowadays have difficulty settings. Not a lot of games had that back then.

I don't necessarily think that games nowadays is easy, but definitely the difficulty isn't as hardcore as 'ye old days. I played on PS2 the most and it feels like most of the game is easy at first, and then gets harder as time goes on, for example, Resident Evil 4, the longer you played the game, the harder it gets, i mean of course you progress as time goes on, like you bought a crazy op gun that kill zombles left right and center, but the streght and quantity of zombles is also increased as times goes on. So my conclusion is, games nowadays isn't easy, isn't crazy hard, its 'playably' hard if that word even exist, games nowadays is fair i must say, like your character progress through the game and so does the foes, so yeah, games nowadays is still fun, but now hardcore type of fun
