So having recently gotten a PlayStation 3, I've picked up a lot of the exclusive games for the console. Being a big Kingdom Hearts fan, two of the first games I bought were Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 Remix and Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 Remix. Mainly to allow me to play Kingdom Hearts Re: Chain of Memories and Birth By Sleep which I've never had the opportunity to play in the past as well as to refresh on the plot before Kingdom Hearts 3 is coming out. In doing so I of course started with the first game Kingdom Hearts HD Final Mix, and after getting close to beating it on Final Mix Proud Mode I've realized that the game is... Flawed. Which is what I intend on talking about in this article.

Before delving into this however I need to clarify a few things (so lower your pitchforks everyone). Firstly I am not intending on trashing the franchise as a whole or even the first game. As I said I am a long time fan of the franchise who has beaten every entry in the series (excluding Birth By Sleep and Dream Drop Distance) and I have still overall enjoyed my time with Kingdom Hearts Final Mix so far. My main reason for wanting to do this that from what I've seen many people hold the original game up as the best Kingdom Hearts to this day which I strongly disagree with. So I'm going to go over the problems I have with this game that keeps it from being the "best" in my view, many of which are to some extent present throughout the franchise though more so in the original entry. In doing so I will also be talking a bit more generally about my experience with the games and some of the problems I feel it has so to hopefully make this a worthwhile read for more casual fans or those who might be interested in learning more about the franchise. Though keep in mind this should NOT be considered a "review" as it won't really give a complete overview of the game in stead focusing on the flaws and covering them each on their own. There will also be a few spoilers but nothing that should completely ruin the story for those who haven't played this or aný other Kingdom Hearts games. So without further ado let's get started!

1. The Camera

One of the issues most commonly talked about by anyone who has played a Kingdom Hearts game, specifically the first is the camera. Some like and some feel it ruins the entire experience due to seemingly having a mind of its own and changing angles. Now, while I have spent a huge amount of time with the franchise, it's been well over a year since I last played any of the entries before replaying the Final Mix version in stead having played a lot of other games. So I feel like I'm coming into it with a somewhat fresh mindset, and unless the inclusion didn't give it away, I definitely think it is a problem. It tends to be zoomed in restricting your view and randomly changes angles to where it can become frustrating during parts of the games, especially during boss fights which were made even more challenging by me playing on proud. What make sit troublesome is that you often need to manipulate your environment meaning you are dependent on the camera. Some frustrating examples of this was one the first bosses The Trickmaster where you can practically only damage him by getting to higher ground first in order to jump at him and Ursula.

This complaint was addressed by Square Enix in Kingdom Hearts 2 where the camera was changed. In the Final Mix version of the original we in stead get a new manual mode. After starting out on this mode however my conclusion is that it's actually worse than the auto mode due to not being responsive enough which makes controlling it a pain especially when you have to fight enemies at the same time. Which lead to me switching back. Though I will admit that much is probably a preference thing and some might vastly prefer it, for me personally neither of the modes really fixed the issue and it is still a glaring problem as it effects gameplay. Though I wouldn't say it's the point where the game is unplayable as some of the more heavy critics of the game and franchise as a whole would argue. It isn't completely game breaking but it does take getting used to and even then can cause frustration by unfairly adding to the difficulty. It is sort of disappointing that it wasn't changed in the Final Mix version considering the game was rebuilt from the ground up.

2. Platforming and Freedom of Movement

Though platforming exists to some extent in all Kingdom Hearts games it is especially prevalent here. You will be spending a fair amount of time solving platforming puzzles. I think the decision to include this was originally to give the game a more explorative feel which could be enjoyable considering the game essentially consists of you visiting all kinds of different Disney movie worlds meaning there's a lot of potential to try different things. Some fans do enjoy this and many tout this as one of the reasons the original is superior to the sequel as some feel the second is too "on rails". I disagree with this for a few reasons. While this might have worked to some extent when the game was first released it has not aged well and it is especially apparent now in the original game.

Unfortunately this is another segment of the game where the bad camera can be particularly annoying. The angles can cause you to miss jumps you shouldn't and this is made worse by the fact that it already has this very clunky feel. Though manual mode might help I find that it doesn't work too well in combat and you shouldn't switch between the two constantly. In fact you're not going to be able to as the combat and platforming often mix. This was made even more frustrating in some areas like Deep Jungle and Agrabah which had a lot of platforming and where failing a jump actually means that you could be sent to another area which meant you had to navigate your way back while at the same avoiding any heartless along the way. While probably done to try and give these worlds a more interconnected feel whatever positive brought by that is outweighed by the tedium it causes. Besides this even when the platforming worked mostly like it should it never actually added to the fun to the game. It in stead acts mostly as a path to get to the fun segments (the combat and progressing the story). It's not very inventive and usually the challenge if any comes from having to fight heartless at the same time or the clunky platforming controls. This is was done much better in the second game where it's reduced so to not be frustrating but there's still enough freedom so it doesn't purely feel like it's a heartless fighting simulator.

3. Puzzle Solving and Lack of Direction

This somewhat ties into the platforming. At some points in the game you'll have to solve various environmental puzzles which usually consists of something either blocking the path like in Wonderland or Agrabah. There are two major problems with this however. The first is the exploration in itself, much of the worlds is fairly barren and doesn't contain much to discover besides more heartless to fight and potentially chest with items inside. While this is fine due to the highly entertaining real time combat system, when you're actually forced to explore to just solve a puzzle it can be quite boring when it takes a lot of time. I would say the age of the game factors in here as well as we've naturally become more used to sprawling game worlds with lots of little details and things to see do. This was clearly not the focus of the game and it shows.

The next problem is the puzzles themselves which are sometimes nearly impossible to solve without the use of a guide unless you know the solution because of having played the game previously. Perhaps the most apparent example of this is when I played through atlantica, a world I skipped completing in my original playthrough due to not liking the swimming controls. When I had progressed pretty far into the world this time around I was eventually stuck cluelessly swimming around between different areas having no idea how to progress as I had been everywhere I could go. Eventually I caved in and looked at a guide and it was then I found out that I had to find a dolphin that appeared in a specific area, ride while holding on to it which was automatically done when approaching it. After watching it swim around for a while with Sora and the gang hanging on, it would disappear. It turns out then you have to go to another area and find it again upon which it would ride through a current that you can't swim through to get to an inaccessible area in the middle of it. This is simply an example of bad design. The puzzle isn't much of an actual puzzle since it doesn't require much actual skill but the solution is still almost impossible to discover by any other way method than pure chance. No one is going to realize this is the only way to progress unless they've tried every other thing before it especially due to the fact that you have to find it not once but twice in different areas.

This could've been tolerable though if the game actually gave you some sort sense of direction before or after first finding the dolphin. Throughout the game you're rarely given a clue of where to go and it leaves you just sort of forced to wander around at times trying to find the way to progress unless or using a guide. This in particular was a moment that really ruined the enjoyment of the game for me albeit temporary especially after being a world I already didn't enjoy due to the unique controls. Even when it's tolerable it can still impact the flow of the game.

4. The Story

So here we come to the last and probably most subjective point of this entire article and though it didn't affect my enjoyment as much as the other points brought up I want to talk about it nonetheless. Firstly to give some background to those who may not be too experienced with this or the following games the first game differs a fair bit in story in terms of the characters. In the following games a lot of original characters were introduced like organization 13 and some of the games like 358/2 days focus almost entirely on these characters which have quite a lot of depth to them leading to good character development and generally helps drive the story.

In the original game however the Disney characters and villains are focused on almost exclusively. While you are trying to find Riku and Kairi for most of the game the actual journey getting there involves exploring various Disney world and solving the problems various of these characters facing essentially serving as sort of mini sub plots. If like me and most other fans (I would guess) you've enjoyed watching various Disney movies (and can look past the absurdity of having Donald/Goofy and Cloud Strife in the same game) you will likely find this enjoyable. However the more I've played this game the more I've realized that it's most enjoyable to me
in doses.

In Kingdom Hearts 2 the direction felt a bit more unpredictable plot wise due to the nature of Organization and various other interesting characters that you could encounter and this often brought with it some more serious moments in the story. This balances out a lot of the more light hearted moments when exploring various Disney worlds and completing the sub plots which made the story all the more interesting to me. The only real comparable thing you have here is encountering Riku and all of this made the story feel a bit more predictable and less interesting to follow. Of course this is only me speaking and my enjoyment might also be affected by the fact that I first got into the series with 358/2 days which kept the Disney part to a minimum. I know many prefer the first game specifically because it focuses on the Disney universe and I can understand why but for me personally this is another reason this game feels a bit disappointing compared to the rest.

In conclusion

All of this combines to explain why I do have a problem with this game despite enjoying it and even some of the gripes I have with the franchise as some of this is apparent in other games in the series. It isn't the worst *cough recoded or unchained x if it even counts cough* but I do feel it's the Kingdom Hearts game that gets the most undeserved praise, looking past how it made the others possible and just looking at it as a standalone entry. I feel like the other games are what really made Kingdom hearts more interesting past it just being a Disney/final fantasy crossover and the fast paced real time combat system. With all of that said however I can still understand why some may prefer it. This is only the opinion of one fan after all and I realize I will likely have the unpopular opinion when it comes to a lot of this so do feel free to state your disagreements.

In any case I do hope you enjoyed reading this article. This is a bit of a special case as it's the first argumentative article I've written that targets a somewhat niche group of readers (existing Kingdom Hearts fans mainly which I'm not sure there is a ton of on the board). Even though I stepped down as an article writer if you would like to see me write more articles about Kingdom Hearts (or similar ones dealing with other franchises perhaps) feel free to let me know!

Annnnd yet another setback to my interest in this series that I so badly want to get into at some point. I'm now nervous about buying it. ._.

As for your puzzle complaint, I can explain it very simply: Square-Enix. Yeah, see that logo on the case? If it's made by them and from the PSX and early PS2 days, then expect nonsensical and/or tedious and boring puzzles. They excelled in making puzzles that you simply couldn't solve by using any other method than trial and error by means of trying literally everything whether it made sense or not. This is apparent in many classics of theirs, but especially Dino Crisis and Resident Evil (oh gosh, Resident Evil is the king of them). Why this was considered a good idea, I'll never know. Still it, by my experience anyway, invariably plagued every game they touched during those days. Though in all fairness Eidos did the same with Tomb Raider puzzles, forcing you to do some random and entirely unrelated (and illogical, and unguessable) thing(s) in order to progress further in the game.

So yeah, interesting piece here. Thanks for crushing my hopes the insightful look into this game and series. I'll be sure to look up some gameplay before blindly buying it now like I probably would have.

EDIT: I'm a derp. RE and DC were Capcom.

Eirinn : If it makes you feel better I'm still a huge fan of the series.. Despite what I said in this article these are all nitpicks on my part coming from a guy who has played most of the other games and I don't believe they're going to be prevalent enough to ruin the experience for most people. I think ultimately it will come down to if you like the concept. If you love many disney movies, can look past the absurdity of the idea (disney characters and final fantasy characters in the same game) and like the real time combat then you're likely going to enjoy it. Those are the two main draws for me personally and I still consider this one of my favorite franchises. In that case I would definitely recommend trying it, I was actually a bit suprised that you weren't already a fan considering how you're a huge playstation gamer. 1.5 and 2.5 can both be gotten for a very cheap price now and contains everything you need to get into it.

The story in the original while not in my personal opinion as good as later games is still worthwhile to play through and did keep me invested. Just be prepared for levels of convolution only really exceeded by the metal gear franchise  in terms of the timeline if you really get into it.
