It’s Christmas Story Week! (Day 1)

Ages: 9+

(All names of existing people are changed due to privacy)

“Uh... Hello... My name’s Joshua McKinsey... I’m a 16-year old person with autism. As you can see or not, I have long, dark blonde hair and blue eyes. I live with my mother, father and sister very peacefully in a big house. My hobbies are gaming, writing and drawing. And today, I will tell you a story about the past days. It started where I went home from school once again. I’ve seen my little sister Tiffany on my way. She was carrying a plate of ice she found somewhere in the park. We were pretty close with each other. I guess that’s what real siblings must be... Anyway, she went up to me.

Tiffany: “Hey, bro! I just found this piece of ice! Look how thick it is!”
It indeed was pretty thick. Thick enough to stand on, but not thick enough to skate on. It was already winter and snow has fallen at most places. I was wearing a blue scarf, a grey coat, warm gloves for the winter, normal jeans and... that’s basically it.
Joshua: “Wow... Where did you found it?”
Tiffany: “In Greenleaf Park! The ice is still there but it’s so coooold...”
Tiffany was 5,5 years younger than I was. That’s right, she’s 10 and a half years now. But hey, I’m proud to be her brother. Whether she was 9 or 19. She knew I was done with school at this time. I looked on my watch. It was 14:37 PM. School was over since 7 minutes ago. I looked at Tiffany again, this time with a funny but skeptical face.
Joshua: “Isn’t ice always cold? Heh...”
Tiffany looked at her ice plate. She grabbed the biggest one she could find. Sadly, that wasn’t really a large one, just a few inches big.
Tiffany: “Yeah, that’s true... Oh, and my friends are at the lake now! Maybe you want to come and help us get rid of the ice?”
Joshua: “Uh, sure! I’ll lay my bag home and then I’ll come, okay?”
Tiffany went to the path that leads to Greenleaf Park, the park of our town. She stuck up her thumb and went to her friends again. And I went home. The town we lived in wasn’t really big: It had over 200 houses, a church, 2 malls, an amusement park... Actually indeed still a lot, but not very much. Our town only had like 7500 citizens. I stopped next to that church and there are three roads near the west-sided fence: One leading to my school and a mall, the other side leads home. And the third one leads to Greenleaf Park. Once I arrived at home, I heard mom and dad decorating the Christmas tree together. Their names were Bruce and Amy.
Bruce: “Honey, do you think the kids will like the tree so far?”
Amy: “Well... It sure looks great. But we miss one thing...”
Mom grabbed a long, not-so pointy thing with a huge star on the tip from the table where all decorations were. Apparently, that thing was the peak of the tree. Mom saw me standing in the doorway.
Amy: “Hi, sweetie!”
Joshua: “Uh... Mom?”
I looked a bit surprised about something.
Amy: “Yes?”
Joshua: “Why does the tree look so great!? What did you two do in order to get this so good?”
Dad was grabbing a few Christmas baubles for the tree, but one fell on the ground and broke. My dad was pretty clumsy, but not on his work. Absolutely not, he can’t do that on his work. He is the co-owner of an important company that produces and sells photo albums people made on the site that is linked to the company. And the company’s main office is in France. So he travels from here to there and reversed, every day. Anyway, dad laid those baubles on the table.
Bruce: “Well, Josh, your mom and I put effort in this and it resulted in this... Of which I never expected to happen.”
I inspected the tree from a bit closer.
Bruce: “Don’t touch anything, please! Oh, and don’t tell your sister! It’s better if she sees it by herself!”
Joshua: “Okidoki, dad. Wow... The tree looks amazing. It’s the one from last year, but still.”
Mom went up to dad and grabbed a box he had next to him. She took it to the kitchen which wasn’t far away from the living room. Those two rooms actually were one: There was no wall between them.
Amy: “Let’s see...”
I was about to go away to lay down my bag and go back to Tiffany, but dad called me.
Bruce: “Uh, Joshua?”
Joshua: “Yes, dad?”
Bruce pointed at another box, but this one wasn’t opened yet.
Bruce: “Your mom and I got something for you! We found it on the attic and... We thought you could use it. Otherwise Tiffany would get this from us.”
I opened the box and saw there were a lot of old comics inside. Superman, Batman, Spiderman, etc... The box almost broke if you carried it because it was so heavy. There also were some regular books in the box. I found them something more likely for girls, so I decided to tell my parents the following...
Joshua: “Thanks, mom and dad. But... Those books... I think Tiffany may keep them.”
Mom went back to the living room with some Christmas decorations.
Amy: “You sure you don’t want those books?”
I was inspecting the books once again. I was certain there were a lot of girly books in the box. But that was obvious, as they’re from mom and dad together.
Joshua: “Yeah, I’m very sure. I really appreciate them, but I think mom’s stuff can better go to Tiffany and dad’s stuff to me.”
Dad was helping mom with decorating the living room. He dropped (once again) a Christmas bauble.
Bruce: “Urgh... Anyway, then that’s settled! Oh and Josh, did you see Tiffany on your way here?”
Joshua: “Uh... Yeah. She was cleaning the park from ice plates.”
Bruce: “Alright. Can you tell her to come here? I think she forgot something important.”
Dad picked up some muddy shoes and Tiffany’s schoolbag. Tiffany laid those there and left all of a sudden to go to Greenleaf Park.
Joshua: “Uh, sure. I was about to lay away my schoolbag and go to her anyway.”
Mom was hanging a Santa Claus figure riding a sleigh on the wall. It had a switch and if you used it, some lights on the sleigh turned on.
Amy: “Be sure to be back at five ‘o clock, honey.”
I went to the door. Once there, I opened it and was looking at my mom.
Joshua: “Heh heh, I will!”
Amy: “Have fun, honey!”
Joshua: “Thanks!”
I closed the door but noticed I still had my schoolbag with me. Oh well, taking it for once doesn’t hurt. I went to Greenleaf Park, where Tiffany and her 4 friends were. Her friends were as old as she was. Once I arrived, I saw her at the lake, together with her friends Khalil, (11 years old boy, black skin, short black hair, brown eyes and wearing a red winter coat. Is always energetic) Robert, (10,5 years old boy, white skin, short, orange hair, freckles, blue eyes and wearing a blue coat. Is pretty calm) Finn (10,5 year old boy, white skin, short, brown hair pointing up, green eyes and wearing a green coat. Is pretty energetic) and a mysterious boy who name was Justin. Justin was saying nothing, but still joined the group. The others didn't knew anything about Justin. Only that he has a purple coat and fairly long, dark blonde hair. It even covers his eyes. But he also wears a purple cap, so it pushes his hair down as well. They believe he's 13 year old, and thus the oldest. Anyway, I saw Tiffany and her friends.
Joshua: "Hey, Tiffany!"
Tiffany: "Hey, bro! Why did it took you so long?"
I pointed my thumb at the direction our house was at.
Joshua: "Well, mom and dad need you to clean up some mud and lay away your school stuff and shoes properly..."
Tiffany: "What? I thought I laid them away already!"
Tiffany ran home. Her friends came up to me.
Finn: "So... You're Joshua?"
Robert: "Geez, I never thought he was that tall."
I'm tall, I’ll give them that. I was very tall for my age. I still am, though. I stuck out my hand to introduce myself.
Joshua: "Yup, I’m Joshua! And indeed, I’m very tall! And I heard you were cleaning ice, right?"
Khalil: "You bet, we found so much loose plates here! As if people threw rocks against it! And now the ducks have no trouble in the water anymore!"
Joshua: "Hmm... So it's two in one: You guys enjoy it and you help the ducks, right?"
Finn: "Yup!"
Justin came up to me. For the fifth time, he spoke when near his friends. He talked with an unusual voice. For a 13-year old, he had a bit of a high voice.
Justin: "I'm Justin."
Justin was shaking my hand. He seemed to like to have me as a friend.
Joshua: “Hi, Justin. I’m Joshua!”
Justin: “We know.”
Justin looked at his watch. It was 16:54 PM. He went away and waved to us. And Tiffany’s friends waved back to him. I decided to sit on a bench and stare at the lake. Suddenly, I heard my phone ringing. I grabbed it from my pocket and saw the number was from my best friend Alfie. Alfie was almost exactly as old as I was, as we’re both born in January 2000. I accepted the call and held my phone next to my ear.
Joshua: “Yes, Alfie?”
Alfie: “Aww, man... How did you know it was me?”
Joshua: “Well, your phone number betrayed you.”
Alfie: “Dang you, phone number! Haha!”
Alfie seemed to sound happy. He probably wanted to tell something funny.
Joshua: “Heh heh... Anyway, why the call?”
Alfie: “Huh?”
Joshua: “You called me.”
Alfie: “Oh yeah! I thought: As I’m over at Sherman’s house together with Mina, Timothy and Kimberly, we need you to complete the gang!”
Joshua: “Uh... I’ll co-...”
Alfie: “Geez, I was joking!”
Joshua: “What?”
Alfie: “Oh, I was talking to Sherman. Oh well... Want to come?”
Joshua: “Sure. Although I’m with my sister’s friends now.”
Alfie: “...”
Alfie seemed to be silent now. Was he mad? Or just joking again?
Joshua: “What?”
Alfie: “......Seriously?”
Joshua: “Uh...”
Alfie: “You prefer your baby sister’s friends more than your own friends?!”
Joshua: “She’s not a baby, she’s 10 and a half...”
Alfie: “That’s the same thing, Josh.”
Joshua: “No, it’s not... Anyway, is it okay if I go tonight? I mean... My parents need me in... YIKES!”
I looked at my watch and yelled. It was 17:03 PM. I was too late!
Joshua: “I need to go home already! Uh... Alfie? Is that okay?”
Alfie: “We’ll come to you, then.”
Alfie ended the call. I was looking a bit confused. Tiffany’s friends came up to me.
Finn: “What’s the matter?”
I went off the bench. I grabbed my schoolbag and put my phone back in my pocket.
Joshua: “Guys... I got to go now. I need to be home now!”
Khalil: “Aww, bummer... Well, see you later then!”
Joshua: “Bye guys!”
I went away, to my home. Tiffany’s friends waved at me. They waved until I was out of their sight. Then they continued cleaning the lake from loose ice plates.

Later on that day, at 18:30 PM...

My parents, Tiffany and I were eating dinner. Mom made lasagna for dinner today. We were just silent the entire time. Saying nothing was something we only did today. I don’t know why either.

Amy: “So... How was your day on school, Tiffany?”
Tiffany: “Well, I haven’t been at a lesson today. The teachers all needed to replace the other ones.”
Bruce: “Yeah, I heard the entire country caught a fever. So you two know what that means...”
Tiffany: “Uh, packing ourselves in a thick outfit of clothes?”
Amy: “Yes. You two need to be dressed warm enough so you don’t catch a fever when going out there. And how was your day, Joshua?”
Joshua: “...”
I was staring at my food. I didn’t even start with eating. I remember I had my reasons. But I’ll explain later.
Amy: “Joshua?”
Joshua: “Huh, what?”
I pretended I was elsewhere with my thoughts. But no one believed that.
Bruce: “Josh, I’m worried about you now. You don’t eat, you don’t talk, you stare at your food... Are you thinking of a way to eat it?”
Tiffany laughed. She was still a child, and she found it funny what dad said. I, however, did not laugh.
Bruce: “Seriously, though... If there’s something wrong, you can tell us what’s bothering you so much. We don’t bite you, Joshua.”
Joshua: “Thanks...”
I was playing with the carpet on the table a bit. Mom went closer to dad and was whispering to him.
Amy: “Should we just tell them?”
Bruce: “Well, I think it’s better if Joshua is more cheered up. I mean... What if he gets disappointed because of it?”
Amy: “Well, we have to take that risk then...”
Mom went back to her previous position.
Amy: “Tiffany and Joshua.”
Tiffany: “Yes, mom?”
Joshua: “What......”
Amy: “I recently found a letter in our mailbox and it’s from a very special person that comes and will live here. Tiffany, if you want... The letter is on your father’s desk.”
Tiffany went up and was walking to dad’s desk, which was in a room next to the kitchen, which was at the right of our front door. One of our house rules was: Don’t disturb dad if he is busy there. That is because that’s his desk for work. But then at home. Tiffany opened a drawer and indeed saw a letter laying there. She picked it up and went back to the dinner room.
Tiffany: “Should I...”
Amy: “Yes, sure! Go ahead and read it for us!”
Tiffany opened the envelope. She was pretty nervous. She took the letter out of it and began to read it, but stopped after the first words.
Tiffany: ““Dear upcoming brother and sister”...”
It indeed was silent. I looked up to mom with a surprised face. Another sibling. Yay... Not. I mean, one sibling is good, two siblings.... Hmm... Have to think about that one.
Joshua: “What the...”
Bruce: “And what comes after that, Tiffany?”
Tiffany: ““I would like to meet you now, but unfortunately I can’t. But in a few months, I will take the chance to meet you two!”...”
I went up and went to the front door and opened it. I went outside and went to my friends. I remember my friends said they were at Alfie’s house now. So I went there. My parents appeared to let me go, as they thought i would go to our yard. Once I arrived at Alfie's house without trouble, I rang the doorbell. And guess who opened the door...
Alfie: “Ah... You arrived...”
Joshua: “Look, can I come in? I just need help with something.”
I took one step in the house, but Alfie pushed me back.
Alfie: “Dude, I was waiting 2 hours. Kimberly was waiting 2 hours because she just got a new game console. Mina was waiting 2 hours because she passed an important exam on school. And Timothy was waiting 2 hours because Mr. McKinsey here is so disrespectful to stay away from us, while Timothy’s dad is in the hospital with heavy injuries! You’re not coming in anymore, it’s too late!”
Joshua: “And I was waiting 2 hours because you said “We’ll come to you, then” but you didn’t arrive! Let go Timothy or Mina!”
Alfie: “You forgot Kimberly.”
Joshua: “Grr... I just...”
I turned around and sat on the small stairs that lead to the door.
Joshua: “*sigh* I just heard Tiffany and I are not going to be alone soon... So I wanted to let you guys know that...”
Alfie went next to me on the stairs.
Alfie: “Really?”
Joshua: “Yes... I always think about you guys, but I had to be home for dinner. And if my new sibling is born, I will still hang out with you guys. Because you guys are my friends. And I never let my friends down.”
Alfie laid his hand on my shoulder.
Alfie: “We’ll be there for you too, then. Heh, if you need a babysitter, ask Mina. She is the one with 3 siblings and she always has to babysit them if her parents aren’t home.”
Joshua: “Yeah, but Mina is 18 and can take care of herself if she wants. Anyway, can I come in? It’s not summer anymore... Brrr...”
My arms were cold. I left without a jacket, so you can understand I got cold arms.
Alfie: “Sure.”
Alfie and I went up and went to the door. He opened it and we went inside, to the living room. Timothy (17 years old, brown short hair, green eyes, wearing a blue hoody and a blue-black cap. Also wears black jeans) and Mina (18 years old, black long hair, blue eyes, wearing a black loose sweater (one where the open spot at her neck and chest even goes around her shoulders) and grey jeans. Also has a lock of hair in front of one eye) were playing a board game. They were playing Monopoly. Kimberly (16 years old, blonde long hair, blue eyes, freckles, wears a striped pink-black shirt and a grey skirt. Also wears black boots and pink headphones) was playing a game on her handheld gaming console. Kimberly had a pretty big (but not very big) chest so she always had to keep her gaming console in front of her. However, she can’t play more than 45 minutes, otherwise her arms hurt a lot when she’s laying somewhere. And she already had problems with her arms, I heard. Plus the fact that she isn’t allowed to play games a lot. Only 45 minutes per 3 hours, I’ve heard. Timothy saw me standing in the doorway.
Timothy: “Hey, Joshua! It’s about time, buddy.”
Joshua: “Hi, Timothy!”
Alfie was whispering to me.
Alfie: “Should I tell it? Or do you want to tell it yourself?”
Joshua: “I’ll tell.”
Alfie went upstairs and was going to grab something. I went further into the living room and went to the TV. I turned around to face Kimberly, Timothy and Mina.
Joshua: “Everyone... I need to tell you all something.”
Kimberly’s gaming console made some sounds because Kimberly was still playing a game on it.
Timothy: “And that is?”
Joshua: “Well, my mom is expecting another child to come. So Tiffany and I won’t be the only ones in our house then.”
Kimberly’s gaming console made a fail sound because she was game over in her game. Mina gets up and faces Joshua.
Mina: “Should I say “congratulations” or “you’re screwed”? Because sure, one sibling could be good. But believe me, being the oldest of a total of 3 children isn’t really fun if you are needed as a babysitter. Let go if you’re with four like in my case.”
Timothy: “Mina. I’ve noticed something.”
Mina looked at Timothy.
Mina: “What did you notice?”
Timothy pointed at the Monopoly board.
Timothy: “Well, the fact that you grabbed 100 money by accident.”
Mina saw she indeed grabbed too much Monopoly money. She grabbed the money she had too much and laid it back in the ‘bank’. She faced Joshua again. Meanwhile, Kimberly’s gaming console made another fail sound. She turned off her console and laid it away.
Kimberly: “Stupid game...”
Kimberly saw me standing next to the TV.
Kimberly: “Oh hi, Joshua! Heh, I didn’t see you there!”
My heart started to pound faster once Kimberly talked to me. I couldn’t talk properly to her for some reason. Actually, I couldn’t talk when she was here at all. Timothy turned around to face Kimberly.
Timothy: “Of course not, you were playing a video game!”
Kimberly looked at Timothy with a serious face.
Kimberly: “Oh, shut up... Like you’re there for everyone 24 hours per day...”
Mina: “Guys... Don’t fight now. I mean... It’s a normal Thursday for us, and please let it stay like that.”
Timothy had to laugh out loud.
Timothy: “Whahahaha!! What kind of useless reason was that, Mina?!”
I went out of the room. Kimberly saw that and went up.
Kimberly: “Ugh, where’s Alfie if you need him...”
Kimberly followed me, while I went outside. She saw me walking away from Alfie’s house.
Kimberly: “Joshua!! Wait!”
Kimberly ran up to me. I turned around to face her.
Joshua: “Every single time I come over at Alfie’s house, Mina and Timothy fight until it’s evening. I’m done with that.”
I finally had the courage to talk. But my pounding heart wasn’t getting over. Why was it always when Kimberly was with me?
Kimberly: “I know... And I will go with you. I need to be home anyway.”
I’ve heard from one of Kimberly’s friends that she gets bullied by a group of students on school. Good news is, they will leave our school soon. (Yes, we’re in the same school, we’re even in the same class) Bad news is, they’ve promised Kimberly to ‘give her a big finale’ before they leave. I wonder what they meant with that. Anyway, Kimberly and I were already walking to my home. I thought it was a good time to compliment her. But with what? She loves gaming, she dresses cute... Wait... That’s it!
Joshua: “K-Kimberly?”
Kimberly: “Yeeees?”
Joshua: “I... didn’t really notice it today, but y-you look... f-fabulous today...”
Kimberly looked at me with her bright blue eyes. She smiled.
Kimberly: “Thanks! Although you don’t have your coat on, you look... awesome as well!”
That’s a relief. She likes me. But as in friendship or as in love? That’s the question.
Joshua: “Heh... Thanks...”
The sky was as dark as Mina’s hair color is. It was already evening. And the moon was beautiful. It was perfect for... Wait, that can be a great idea! That’s what I thought when I saw the moon.
Joshua: “I have an idea! Want to go to the park?”
Kimberly: “Sure! But... I will need to call my dad first!”
Kimberly grabbed her phone and called her father. Her parents divorced and her mother (who is most of the time doing really bad things) didn’t want to take care of Kimberly anymore. So she now lives with her father, whose name is Paul. Kimberly lives with Paul since she was 3. Also, Paul had an addiction too: Making wooden monsters and fantasy creatures. And Paul always told Kimberly there were good monsters as well. Kimberly even got a home-made plushy from Paul when she was 3, to make things better after the divorce. It basically was a pink, round monster with two sharp teeth sticking out of its mouth and found eyes that give a friendly impression. It also had a red ribbon attached on its head, so you could see it was a female. And how in Earth’s name do I know this? Well... I was at Kimberly’s home once and she told me this story. Anyway, Kimberly called Paul.
Kimberly: “Hey, dad! I’m with Joshua at the moment, he’s a really cool boy from school!”
“Cool boy”? That’s a compliment, it has to be!
Kimberly: “No dad, we don’t have a relationship! Eww! But... Can I go to the park and say I’m home at 20:00 PM?”
Well, that was offending me a lot. I mean... I have no diseases, I’m starting the day with a shower, etc... How can I be “eww”?
Kimberly: “And how about in 15 minutes? Alright. See you in 15 minutes! Kisses!”
Kimberly ended the call. She went up to me, not knowing I heard her side of the call. I looked a bit down and she noticed that.
Kimberly: “Joshua? Is everything alright?”
Joshua: “*sigh*”
I stopped walking towards the park. And so did Kimberly.
Kimberly: “Joshua... I’m getting worried about you now... Did you hear my phone call?”
Joshua: “Yes... I mean, I thought we were good friends... That I have no diseases or something to everyone...”
Kimberly: “Oh no, no, no! I said that by purpose! But I’ll tell you at the park.”
She winked at me with her right eye (the one that was the closest one to me). Kimberly was walking at the left side, I was walking at the right side. But once she winked, she apparently gave me a hint. But I didn’t knew what it was meant for. I suppose it was something she didn’t said yet.
Later on, at the park... At 19:32 PM, 13 minutes before having to leave...
Kimberly and I were at the park, of which was still open. We went to a bench that was on a small hill, with only a big oak tree and that bench. People told me it’s the best place to confess your love to someone. I didn’t knew that, and assumed it was a rumor.
Kimberly: “Josh?”
Kimberly looked at me. I looked at Kimberly. I knew something was coming, so I was preparing myself for that thing to come.
Joshua: “Yes?”
Kimberly: “I told my dad that we don’t have a relationship... But... I want to tell you that I like you...”
I saw this one coming a bit. Sure it was surprising, but I didn’t knew she said that. Only that it could surprise me. But now comes the trickiest part: accepting or declining her feelings. Of course I want to accept them! But can we be happy enough together? That’s the REAL question. I mean, declining it means I hurt her feelings, and accepting it means an enormous challenge.
Joshua: “Kimberly... Wow...”
Kimberly made a ball from her hands and laid her hands on her legs, then looked at it. She sighed.
Kimberly: “I wish I could have told you this earlier... But I want to spend the rest of my life with you.”
Geez, she sure knew how to say it. Though I never knew how to say that either. So... Here I go as well.
Joshua: “Kimberly, I... like you as well... And I also wanted to spend my life further... with you.”
Kimberly: “R-Really?!”
Kimberly looked at me with a happy face. I nodded and told her I wasn’t kidding. She gave me a hug when coming closer to me on the bench and thanked me a lot, just for accepting her feelings. But suddenly, someone came up to us... And I knew that person very well.”

Well that improved Joshua's day.

So then it's a seven part story? Interesting. I'll have to be watching for the rest to pop up.
