Change of heart?

So we all remember how Shuhei Yoshida said last year that there would be no PS Vita 2 because mobile gaming had made for an unhealthy climate for handheld game systems. We also remember how I ranted endlessly about the silly nature of that comment because let's face it: dipping sales or not, the 3DS and PS Vita both enjoyed a good number of sales and a strong fan base. But let's not get into all that again.

Well now it looks like Sony may be poised to reveal a handheld alongside the PS4 Slim and PS Neo (now to figure out why on Earth they think it's a good idea to reveal the Slim and Neo at the same time) at the upcoming PlayStation event.
Bear in mind these are all rumors, and as of right now Sony has yet to say a word about the existence of a new handheld, although looking at how much they said about the PS Vita... okay yeah it's definitely real or they would talk. Only handhelds can be ignored this much by them (cheap jab at PlayStation marketing ftw!).

Consider the source
Ah yes, my motto when someone starts spouting off a bunch rumors, so I must remember to follow my own rules here. Let's not forget that NX fiasco I made early this year. actually, let's do forget it. Please.

So yeah, apparently these rumors are being spread by the same person that leaked info about the PS4 Slim earlier this year before we knew of it. This same person is claiming "there is also a portable device being manufactured alongside a 'PSP-like' device"*. And though I'm aggravated by his referring to it as a PSP-like device as though a PS Vita never existed, but this rumor is too big to be caught up in that detail.

Another tip we have that suggests this may be factual: "Japanese blog Hakanko is reporting that Sony have registered two wireless modules with the FCC in the United States. The module numbers are AW-CB262 and J20H091, which correspond, respectively, with the model numbers for the modules in the PS4 and the PS Vita."*

So what we have to go on right now is purely rumor, but it's certainly a compelling one with two somewhat reputable sources as industry leaks go. If this device is indeed a handheld then we can only hope Sony saw the outrage of an extremely devoted fan base when they failed to advertise or support the PS Vita (which managed to do fairly well despite Sony's complete abandonment) and will do right by this one. A good place to start might be telling people outside of Japan that it exists...

Hmm I don't about that even if its rumours. I'm not really sure what to say about this as it really reminds me of the wii u. Like I find it hard buying new consoles reasons such as this. But, I dunno if this was to be revealed soon if it would do better or not. So really at this point. I can't judge and assume, I can only wait for the outcome of this new development. '-'

Eniitan : well having a new one wouldn't be made since it's already been 5 years since the current one was released, which would be on pace for the average wait time between new ones,

If there is a new one I probably wouldn't get it, I might end up sticking with the Vita for a long time.

zanderlex : Yeah....I kind of figured towards that. Its been a long time at that. Same I would do the same thing as well I wouldn't get it if there is a new one. For me its not really so....encouraging to by hence why I stick to ones I like to play, and for me I would end up staying with what I have for a long time. Plus the only one I said I'll be willing to buy is the PS4 and thats it. '-'

Eniitan : Yeah I can't blame you, handhelds aren't for everyone. In fact I never liked handheld game systems until I got a PS Vita which is an amazing system. This is exciting to me personally as I was really disappointed to hear there would be no successor to the Vita despite it being so awesome.

zanderlex : If there is one I'm buying it asap. Hopefully a lot of people will and show Sony that we love what they're doing with handhelds. But the PS Vita is definitely staying relevant to me for years to come as well. Too many great games and such on there to lay it aside.

Eirinn : Thanks for understanding as you know I do like handled games, but it would be from the old generation see? Because it had a purpose for me there not as of now. Since I find it strange I know people like the PS Vita for reasons that I can understand. In all honesty I never heard of it until my cousin got one it looked like really really strange to me so...I just stayed with what I can understand with really. Sad to hear for you that the console won't have any successor to build on it more. '-'

The handheld market has been in a virtual stranglehold ever since the original Game Boy. Sure, you had competitors, most of whom have gone on to the technology graveyard in the sky (Sega Nomad,Atari Lynx,Neo Geo Pocket Color among others.) Will Sony's handheld make a difference? I do not think so. Add to the fact mobile gaming is more popular than ever and that is just another reason the handheld market is a tough one to survive in.

If we could get a handheld for the ps4 that works like the Wii U pad then i will gladly buy this because the extra buttons on Remote Play being all touch screen gets tedious for some games.

And here I am, staying loyal to my PSP no matter how many years pass

I honestly think Sony should stay in the handheld market. They offer a totally different approach than Nintendo, we saw it with the PSP and the Vita just confirmed it. They have a solid position in the market, so it would be a shame they didn't go down without a fight.

True is that mobile gaming has made a huge leap forward in the years the Vita has been around, and since Sony is producing mobile phones the temptation to leave the handheld market to focus on phones exists. We don't know how strong it is, but it exists. Still, gamers want Sony to keep producing handhelds, and they should listen to the fanbase a bit more often

Oh, and no, it definitely isn't a good idea to reveal Slim and Neo at the same time. Btw, there was even a need for a Slim? The current PS4 is already stylized and light enough compared to its predecessors.

Personally, I enjoy my Vita/PSP way more than my 3DS, so, I'm okay with a new Sony handheld. There's really only one game I play on my 3DS now, that being Smash Bros. Where as on Vita, I've been replaying Persona 4 Golden, Metal Gear Solid 3, the PS1 FF games, and some other stuff.

Oldschool777 : Well it's certainly true that Nintendo has always dominated the handheld market, but the PSP and PS Vita have actually gained a foothold in the market as well, though granted it's nowhere near the size of Nintendo's share. Sony's problem with it was that it didn't sell like their consoles, and that is simply never going to happen. Their handhelds are successful for what they are though, so another handheld by them would be smart at least for now. Mobile is working on choking the handheld game system market out though, which is a shame because the quality is far below handheld quality which until the PSP and PS Vita was saying a lot.

TristanTehGamer1 : Well yeah the touchscreen and touch pad control mapping is an issue for some games, but thankfully some developers actually find ways to make it work...while others slap on the defaults because they have to do something. But how sweet would it be to get L2 and R2 triggers? I won't hold my breath on it because it isn't exactly compatible with handheld sizing. And I won't even dare dream about L3 and R3. Lol Still the PS Vita is a great system and remote play is a wonderful addition despite it's drawbacks. Could be better though.

EX Palen : Dude you don't know what you're missing on the PS Vita. Lol And I agree wholeheartedly. People try to compare Vita to 3DS and say 3DS has xyz and Vita doesn't so it's bad, but the fact is that the difference in libraries and gaming styles that are supported by the two is what makes the Vita and PSP shine. It's good that both systems have their own identity.

As for a slim...I have no idea why they even made it since Neo is due out as well. I mean it looks cool enough and slims are a tradition, but why reveal them at the same time? Why would I buy a slim if I had to choose between a slim and a Neo? It doesn't make sense to me. I just hope PlayStation doesn't end up oversaturating the market with their products to their own hurt. PS4, PS Vita, new PS handheld, PS Neo, PS4 Slim, PSVR... No wonder they pulled PSTV.

Juliaisme123 : I feel the same. Aside from Harvest Moon/Story of Seasons 3DS has nothing for me, while PS Vita has a great selection for my tastes. Plus those classics are great. Love playing PSX classics on the go like that. The classics alone justify the purchase of a PS Vita, and the great Vita games to boot are the icing on the already awesome cake. And yes I'm hungry as I type this.

True, the mobile market is exploding and they do have a certain freedom to do as they please. But many mobile games are of the 'me too,me too' type of thing or the 'pay to unlock things' type of deal. PSP and Vita are both good handhelds in their own rights and I did enjoy my PSP.

Eirinn : Well, you can get PS1 games on PSP too, but some PS1 games benefit from the 2nd analog stick of the Vita. I've actually been looking for some more Vita games though, these are the games I have: Ratchet and Clank Collection, Sly Collection, Sony Smash Bros (as I like to call it), MGS1-3 and Peace Walker, Final Fantasy III-X/X-2, Soul Sacrifice Delta, and Freedom Wars. Is there anything you'd recommend?

Oldschool777 : Yeah, with easy accessibility to developing for a platform comes a whole lot of cheaply made stuff too.

Juliaisme123 : Well it depends on your tastes of course, but I'll list all of the games I've personally enjoyed: Foul Play, Bastion, Crimsonland, Flower, Nihilumbra (highly recommended), Hot Shots Golf: World Invitational, Asphalt Injection, Shinobido 2: Revenge of Zen (Zen? zin? I'm too lazy to check lol), Uncharted: Golden Abyss, and Gravity Rush. Also Lemmings Touch, Rocketbirds: Hard Boiled Chicken, Kung Fu Rabbit and Helldivers were fairly good games at a cheap price.

I've several more games queued up for purchase as well, and if you're interested in them even though I can't vouch for them here they are: Dungeon Hunters Alliance, Assassin's Creed III Liberation, Tales of Hearts R, Ys: Memories of Celcetta, and Modnation Racers. I have more, but that's too many already. Lol

Same happens at the end of a console's lifespan, out come the crap-tastic shovelware. At least we will never see another Army Men game ever again.

Personally as someone who vastly prefers the Nintendo handhelds I think what Sony needs to do if they're to really compete in the handheld market is to develop more big exclusive games. Though I still find it unlikely that they're still trying considering their comments on mobile gaming and that they more or less seem to have completely given up on the Vita which you acknowledged.

It seems like the majority of big PS Vita games are just ports of remakes of existing games, the few that aren't (like Gravity Rush) end up getting ported to the PS4 eventually showing that they more or less gave up on the Vita. That's fine if you're a big Sony fan and you're likely going to be interested in their consoles regardless but it doesn't give the handheld much in terms of a pull if you aren't set and already own a PS4 which the majority of potential buyers are going to. Because you can just play most of the games on a main Playstation console. Meanwhile this is what Nintendo handhelds have excelled at having loads of big name exclusives that you won't find on any other platform, main Nintendo consoles included.

However this is going to take a big investment for them because well... Think about it. Why would someone choose to release a game exclusively for a sony handheld which at least presently has a pretty limited userbase compared to something like the PS4 or the 3ds? They're not. In stead developers are going to do what's most profitable unless Sony can offer incentive for them to develop specifically for their handheld. Which ultimately could end up meaning more trouble than its actually worth for them.
