It's Galaga, the classic, fun game made by Namco that makes me press keys on my keyboard really rapidly over and over in order to defeat the enemies fast enough. It’s worth the tiredness I feel in my fingers afterwards! I’ve been playing this game for many years and now that I have been pretty far in the game (stage 29), I can say that it’s pretty intense after the first 3 stages and it just gets harder as you go.

Graphics (looks of objects): 8.5/10

I noticed right when I began playing Galaga is that the logo for the name of the game is pretty impressive. I think the enemies are impressive too. The main enemies always remind me of living things I see in real life. The enemies with blue wings remind me of bees. The enemies with red wings remind me of butterflies. The green guys, with the claws, that can turn purple remind me of crabs. I don’t know if it was intentional for all of these enemies to look like those things, but either way it’s pretty cool. I like the look of the “bonus enemies” too (the ones in challenging stages and the ones that spawn out of other enemies) but they’re more creative in my opinion since they don’t remind me of anything I’ve seen before in real life.

The thingamabobs that tell what stage you’re on are strange but they also look good. The first one you see (for stages 1-4) looks like a missile. I’m sure that was on purpose since you shoot missiles at enemies in this game The stage 10 thingy looks like a shield that you’d use to protect yourself from the enemies. But there’s no shield in this game and if there was it would likely be too easy. The stage 20 thingy looks like a stronger shield.

The ships are really cool looking especially when there are 2 of them in the battle at once. I noticed that there’s red fire at the bottom of the ship to make it be like a real rocket, and there’s a missile shooter on the top of the ship that the missiles come out of. I’m glad that the creators of this game decided to put creativity and detail into all these graphics.

Graphics (animations): 9/10

The second thing I noticed when I began playing Galaga is that the logo flashes, which makes it even cooler. It alternates between green and white which go well with each other when it’s flashing. This animation is more difficult to notice since I have to pay less attention to the actual game to see it. The stars in the background blink and pass by and they’re different colors. The farther you progress in the game, the faster the stars pass by. I didn’t think it would, but it increases the intensity of the gameplay.

Each enemy has a different way of flying once they’re finished assuming their positions. The enemies with blue wings tend to circle around you before coming back to the top, but the ones with red wings just fly down, come right at you one time, and then give up and come back to the top. The green/purple ones fly down, do a circle in mid-air and launch a bullet, and then try to come at you once before they give up and return to the top. The one that tries to capture you flies down pretty far diagonally, but then stops and sends its wave toward you to capture you. The wave looks really cool, and even more cool is when the ship is spinning around hopelessly in it.

One of the most overlooked animations is the one where the enemies explode. It reminds me of actual fireworks so I think it was done nicely. The most well-done animation in my opinion is the one where your ship explodes. A giant white cloud of smoke, with some blue and red in it, expands and then gets smaller in an instant. When I saw this for the first time, it combined with the sound effect actually scared me!

The only animation I thought could be improved a lot is the enemies flying in. They make wider turns than they do in the arcade version which makes them harder to shoot and harder to dodge their missiles. If it wasn’t for that I probably would have made it to stage 30. Oh well…

Sound (music): 9/10

There isn’t much music in this game but the music that it has is nice. The music that plays when you start the game is catchy and it causes me to be excited to play the game! When you’re done with a challenging stage there are 2 different songs that can play. A somewhat slow song plays if you don’t shoot down all the enemies. But if you do shoot down every single one, a fast song plays that can easily make me feel victorious. Every time I hear the song I get more of an adrenaline rush that makes me confident that I’ll progress far and get a good score too. When your ship gets captured, a fast and low-pitched song plays that can make me feel sad or angry. It can also make me feel desperate to get that ship back by shooting down the enemy that caught it. The other song that plays is on the results screen after you get a game over. It’s a pretty sad song and it makes me feel like it’s saying, “Gotta be quicker than that!” or “You could have done better…” This game has a nice soundtrack that can make me feel a variety of emotions, which many video games should have. I think the creators of this game could have made background music for each level, especially the challenging stages, that would work. However it might be more fitting for there to be no music for that.

Sound (effects): 9.5/10

There’s more of a variety of sound effects than there is of music which I think is a good thing for a game like this. I really like the sound of the missiles being fired at the enemies. The high-pitch makes it a noticeable sound. The blue-winged and red-winged enemies dying is also a pretty obvious sound effect and it’s the one I hear/notice the most. By far the coolest sound effect is the sound of the wave that is trying to capture your ship. I can’t even describe it but it’s amazing XD I also like the sound of the score counting up after each challenging stage.

Addictiveness: 7.5/10

Wow is this game addicting! I don’t constantly want to play it so it isn’t that kind of addicting, but once I start playing it I find it difficult to stop unless there’s another game I really want to play! Shooting the enemies very quickly, and trying to go for the high score or a higher stage, are what make me addicted to this game. Also, there are different ways you can play the game like playing it with one ship the whole time, or going for a perfect hit-miss ratio.

Story: N0/10

There isn’t a story to this game like every typical classic arcade game, which is why I rated it No out of 10. There is an objective though. You have to defeat all the enemies before they defeat you.

Depth: 6/10

I never knew how many levels this game had since I couldn’t get near that far. There was one time where I used a cheat from YouTube to get up to stage 150 on the arcade version and after that I was way too tired of pain in my fingers to keep going. According to gamefaqs.com, there are 255 stages of Galaga (the arcade version) and it would be endless if the arcade system supported more levels than that. I think that the FDS would handle more levels so I’m guessing the game is actually endless in this version. In my opinion, that isn’t a good thing. This game is fun but I wouldn’t play it for hours and hours on end since there’s not much of a point to it if the game is endless.

Also, there isn’t much to do in this game. It feels like it because you have to go so fast, but all you can do is shoot enemies and dodge their missiles.

Difficulty: 8.5/10

When I first played this game, I struggled to even get past stage 1. It’s quite a pain trying to get anywhere if you only have one ship so it’s crucial to play with 2 once you have the chance. If you get far enough in the game, you’ll have to take many risks to keep your ship(s) alive. The farther you progress in the game, the more missiles you have to dodge and the same goes with enemies. Aside from getting a break with stage 10 and stage 18, where the enemies shoot less missiles at you, the game gets more difficult with every stage.

Overall: 8.5/10

It’s so much fun to play over and over even if I’m not doing well at it. It has impressive graphics, really impressive sound, it’s very addicting, and it’s challenging. All of that makes up one of my favorite classic arcade games of all time. Thank you for reading this review and have a nice day!

I can't believe no one replied to this already!

Galaga is amazing, and I love how thorough your review is (unlike a lot of people, I'll be honest and say I only skimmed through most of it). You did show great attention to detail in explaining the game, as well as explaining everything you loved about it. I hope you're willing to make more reviews like this, since it's content of this caliber that helps the site thrive.

Keep up the great work man. Look forward to seeing what else you do around here

Hmm...I've never played this game before so I might give it a go. Even though it might be something I wouldn't usually play, but hey its always good to try something new right? And the way that you described it well enough is for actually to get people to try, and play the game. I guess I can get into it one day, but that won't be today. Another great review that you have done here pac I look forward to your next one and whenever you posted it up.

Mynamescox44 : I felt the same way because Galaga is such a great, classic video game! I'm so glad you agree I appreciate your honesty and don't feel pressure to read a whole review instead of skimming through it.

There are a few times where I lost interest in making reviews but now my motivation is back and I'll try to keep it that way. So expect many more reviews from me to come I promise to make them all good quality too even though it takes hours to create reviews like this.

Eniitan : I would definitely suggest trying this game but you don't have to and there's no hurry One of my goals in each review is to convince the reader to try out the game, and accomplishing that is making me very happy!

Pacman+Mariofan : As for me as well that's what I do too. Its something that most reviewers are able to do. When you have done that then people will tend to have that feeling of urge to try out them games for themselves. Anyways when I have the time I'll play it and when I do I'll let you know my feelings towards the game. I'm actually kind of looking forward to try the game out when I can. ^-^
