Is it legal for a coworker to tell your boss your two week notice? I was planning to give my two week notice next week but my coworker (who's a two face snake and knows that I have more control in the business than her.) she told the boss about my two week notice and he asked if its true... Couldn't lie so had to tell him yes and only reason she knew about my notice us because her daughter told her. Couldn't find anything about the situation whether it's legal or not.

She can't give your notice for you but if it is true then what is the problem?

I'm confused about the situation. If you are giving your notice then why didn't you tell your boss about it? Why was she able to do it first?

I was going to give my notice on Monday when the week starts again and that I can start my job right after my leave rather than wasting my time unemployed for a few days. I had a conversation with her daughter about it but she told her mom and now the boss talked to me about it which was not supposed to happen. I am quite furious about it and a friend told me it was illegal for an employee to tell someone's notice and it had me wondering, so I went searching and asked a few people and online I really have no results.

I run a gym so I get HR questions and comments more often than not.

The coworker could say, "Hey, Boss, this person is planning on quitting. Heads-up."

That's not illegal. It may not be ethical and her reasoning could be everything from getting you in trouble to letting the boss know he or she needs to start looking for someone else to hire or someone to promote or move to your position. The reasoning could be endless. It's also interesting that her daughter knew and then decided to tell her. I wonder how that happened.

If your coworker said, "This is the two-week notice and So-and-so is officially quitting on this day," well, that doesn't actually work. She can't quit for you. It's not that it is illegal but it certainly doesn't count to actually terminating an employment status.

Illegal? No. Uncool? Probably.

I'm betting there is way more to the story than what you're telling us.

It's legal, just not the best option. Nothing to worry about! Although that was a total jerk move of them to step on your toes like that...

Whether its legal or not doesn't matter in my opinion, that sort of thing is super rude, and I bet you the person doing it knew that. It sounds like this person might not like you, and is being a tattle tail.

The story is... I've been working for the boss for six months now at a nice local restaurant. Good pay, better hours and great people, well most. Once he hired the lady and her daughter (who at first I thought she was decent and her daughter we became quite good friends) things went downhill. She worked here three times before apparently and got fired those three times... She became the type of person who thinks she's the boss because she thinks she knows everything. Work has been more... Erratic and the boss was becoming stressed with people quitting (which she caused... Even her own daughter quit because of her) the people working at the place now always go to me because I worked there the longest and know how things go, which made her see me as a threat... She basically been trying to sabotage me and when I tell the boss, he says he'll do something about it. Next thing I see is him laughing with her having a little conversation of what so ever. I decided to give my notice because it's quite dumb of me staying in a place where I feel miserable, how management is, and how one lady thinks she basically control the whole place but feel threatened that I have more control than her. I talked to her daughter and few other people about leaving and going back to construction... Well mistake on telling her daughter because she told her mom and she told the boss. I was quite furious and didn't want him to know until I had another job. The next two weeks the boss has been treating me poorly and the lady kept threatening me with permanent termination (she can't do that I just laughed and told her to go ahead. She walks away mad) and the workers are upset that I'm leaving but they understand the reasoning. What made me leave so early was that the boss said that I should of told him that I was gonna quit... I blew up telling him how he should tell us, the workers, if we did anything wrong, if we aren't doing anything we're not supposed to be doing, if you want us to do something. Not give us the passive aggressive crap and tell HER what's need to be done because she's nothing but poison to the place and everything was smooth until she arrived. I told him that I was going to but she had no business in doing that. I told him I respect him and all but I can't work in a place where the boss has multiple personalities (another story which I'll tell another day) and he needs to rely on her because you think she gets along with us. Wrong, I told him that she's nothing but trouble and people don't like her. I worked here longer yet she gets more power than me? Even though she got fired three times, does what she wants and always saying she hates this place? He told me to leave so I did. I found another job already but I honestly want to find ways to get her in trouble, get some payback. Reason why I was wondering if it's legal to tell the boss another person's two week notice.
