Mega Man 4 is a very popular video game. The original version was released for the NES in
1991. The game was a huge hit for the franchise. In fact, Mega Man 4 is often
ranked in the top 100 greatest NES games of all time. So, it should be no
surprise that several hacks have been made of this popular game. In this review
I will be reviewing Mega Man 4 Ridley Hack II and comparing to it other hacks
as well as the original game.

Story: 9

Mega Man has foiled Dr. Wily’s plans of world domination three times bringing
peace to the world.  However, new robots start going haywire and causing destruction. Dr. Cossack appears and tells the world that he has invented 8 new Robot Masters and sent them after Mega Man. Cossack explains its time the world recognized him as a true genius.  Mega Man heads out to do battle again and restore peace. However, just who is Dr. Cossack is he really evil or is someone pulling his strings. Mega Man heads out to answer these questions.

Okay, I’m so glad the makers of this hack stuck with the original story line.
Mega Man 4 had an awesome story because it attempted to bring something new to
the series, had suspense, mystery and creativity in it. So, really the story
did not need to be changed. I was glad to see it was not changed as I have
played hacks before were the story line was changed. Thus, just like the
original Mega Man 4 I give the story a 9 out of 10.

Graphics and Controls: 8

Mega Man 4 Ridley Hack II fixed some of the graphical problems the first hack
had. The first Ridley Hack of Mega Man 4 had some graphical issues. The
problems in the first game were due to lags that occurred and control
issues.  In this game the graphics were so much better. The only lag I noticed was in the water stages but that lag was minor and hardly a factor in my playing. I really like how the makers of this game used backgrounds from other Mega Man games that was a nice touch. The stage layouts have been changed but they were nicely done. Also the colors and
sprites were nicely done. It is not quite as good as the original game but I
expected that because after all this is a hack. But, it cleaned up the problems
the first hack had.

The controls were so much better in this game then the first Ridley Hack of
Mega Man 4. In the first hack it felt like I was having to fight the controls a
lot. That caused a lot of problems while trying to play through the game. This
version fixed that as not one time did I feel like I was fighting against the
controls. The controls were very good in this game. Not on par with the original
though but nicely done. Thus, I give the graphics and controls a good score of
8 out of 10

Sound: 10

The sound in this game is the same as the original and it is awesome. Mega Man
4 had a really good soundtrack to it and the sounds in the game were awesome.
The sounds have not been changed at all in this game. The stage themes are
smooth and groovy just like the original game. Mega Man’s buster still has its
awesome sound to let you know your shots are doing damage. The enemies still
have their sound to let you know their shots mean business. But getting back to
the music it just makes you want to pause the game and listen to the music.
Every stage theme fits the stage perfectly.  So, it should be no surprise since the sound was not changed. I give it a perfect 10 out of 10.

Replay Value: 8

I find myself playing this Ridley Hack version more than the first Ridley Hack
version of Mega Man 4. The first hack was a good game but it did have some
problems. This version fixed the problems that occurred in the first hack.
Therefore, it makes this version more enjoyable to play. The graphics are good,
the controls are good and the sound is amazing. In addition, this hack has the
right depth and it is very difficult. Now, since this is a hack I still play it
less than I do the original Mega Man 4. The original Mega Man 4 was just
special in its own way so it would be nearly impossible to top that. Still, this
is a fun game and I had fun playing it. I will certainly be playing it again.

Depth: 9

Like most Mega Man Games the amount of depth in this game is huge. The stages
have been extended meaning it takes a while to beat a stage. It also takes a
while to reach the halfway point in a stage. The stages also have lots of items
in them. There are power ups to get, weapons to earn, items to find, and then
you have two fortress stages. This is a game that will take several hours if
not days to master. But, I like games that have a lot of depth to them. It
makes them more enjoyable. With that being said, this as I have hinted at has
the same amount of depth as the original game. The original game had secret
areas to find. So does this game. The main difference is the stages have been
made longer. As such I give the depth a solid 9 out of 10.

Difficulty 10

Mega Man 4 (Original version) was a difficult game. But once you got the hang
of it that game became easier. The first Ridley Hack just buried you in terms
of difficulty. So how does the difficulty compare in this game? The answer
brutal, this game like the first Ridley Hack just buries you in difficulty.
Enemy placement is hard in this game. Enemies are often place right over pits
or spikes, taking a hit will cause you to fall to your doom. Also enemies just
love to gang up on you and hit you from all directions. Moreover, it is so easy
to scroll enemies back on the screen. Not to mention, unlike the original game
enemies have a lot of health.  I have found that the enemies have 3 times the amount of health compared to the original game. For example, an enemy in the original game might take 4 shots to kill or 1 fully charged shot. In this game it takes 12 hits or 3 fully charged
shots to kill. So yeah, you will lose health in this game quickly. I died a lot
of times due to the enemies having a ton of health.

Also the stages are long which adds to the difficulty it takes a long time just
to reach the midway point. In one stage I thought I had gone pretty deep in the
stage before I died. Well, despite me going deep I did not even reach the
halfway point so I had to go back to the very beginning of the stage.  The items that are hidden in this stage are hidden in tight spots. You will have to be really careful to get them. Getting items will require creativity and skills to pick up. I died a few times trying to get
an item. Furthermore, spikes and pits are numerous in this game and often times
placed in tough spots. You will certainly fall down a pit or land on spikes in
this game, that is just how numerous they are. Most of the time as I mentioned
there is an enemy waiting to knock you down the pit or onto the spikes.

The stage layouts also add to the difficulty as the terrain changes a lot in a
stage. This can give you a disadvantage when fighting an enemy or trying to
outrun them. The Robot Masters in this game move a lot quicker than they did in
the original game. Some were fast in the original game. In this game it seemed
like every Robot Master was fast requiring sharp reflexes and skill to beat.
The game does not do a lot to help you out either. Extra lives are often put in
places were getting them would result in death making it pointless.  So yeah this game is brutal. But I like games that require a challenge and this game fits the bill.  This game will require, skills, creativity, and luck to beat it is that hard. Thus, at the end of the day I give the
difficulty a perfect 10 out of 10. You will die in this game that is a guarantee

Overall: 9

Mega Man 4 Ridley Hack version II was a fun game to play. No it is not as good
as the original game. Nothing seriously wrong with this version it is just hard
to beat the original version. This game though was better than its precursor.
The graphics, controls and sound were cleaned up. Not as sharp as the original
game but very nicely done.  I think the makers of this game were trying to clean up the first version, retain a sense of the original game, but trying to offer something new at the same time. This is evident by them sticking to the original sound and storyline, but changing
the layout and difficulty in this game. Maybe they were trying to make it seem
like players were playing a new game even if it is a hack of the original game.

I don’t think I will ever play a hack though that will beat the original game.
The original Mega Man 4 was just special and near perfect it’s story, sound,
graphics, controls, depth, and replay value. The only other hack I have played
that comes close is the Simper Version of Mega Man 4. Still this game is unique
its own way. I like how they changed the stage layouts in the game. To some
gamers it might drive them crazy. But it feels like it is something new. Let’s
face it if all Mega Man 4 hacks had the same layout as the original version it
would not be diverse and get boring. So I applaud the makers of this hack for
changing the stages. The colors are unique and seem to go with the stages
fairly well.

The only real negatives with this game and they are very minor so most gamers
would not be bothered by the negatives is the small lags and extreme
difficulty. The lag that occurs only occurs in the water stages as the water
physics move up and down. It is not a huge problem though. If there was a lag
in the game I would expect it to be right there due to how the water moves up
and down.  The second is the extreme difficulty. Yes, I have mentioned that I like challenges and I like games that are difficult. But I think they went a little overboard with this version. The difficulty is so extreme it may turn a few gamers off.

Still, I think this is a good solid hack and a fun game to play despite the few
negatives. Would I recommend this game yes I would. If you like Mega Man games
and love to be challenged then this game is for you and you will have fun
playing this game even if you die a lot. On the other hand, if someone is new
to Mega Man games or your trying to introduce somebody to Mega Man this would
not be the game to start off with due to the extreme difficulty. If you wanted
to introduce somebody to Mega Man 4 or new to Mega Man games. I recommend you
play the original Mega Man 4 or the Mega Man 4 Simple Hack. Those two games
will get you used to the controls and feel for Mega Man then you can tackle
this game. Overall I give MM4 Ridley Hack II a good solid rating of 9 out of
10.

Yet another masterful review of yours tornado. Full of details, in-depth comparisons to previous games and hacks and a clear layout of what the game is. Had I been a Mega Man fan, I would have surely given it a shot to test my skills.
