UPDATE: Since making this thread, I've decided to not make this a requirement in order to play games in the Retro Game Room. Instead I'm going to have it so that users get a reminder once in a while to disable their Ad Block for Vizzed.

Based on my site reports, I've estimated that around 1/3 (maybe even more) of all the site viewers of this site are using Ad Block. Vizzed has a lot of financial problems at the moment and with the high server fees of this site and other expenses (the site hosts 10,000s of games totalling 5+ GB and probably 50+ TB worth of bandwidth) it's getting to the point where it's hard for this site to be financially stable, especially with the traffic drops this site has experienced over the past few years. Donations are awesome but only average around $400 a month which doesn't come close to paying the bills.

Please disable your Ad Block for Vizzed.com. You can continue using your Ad Block on all other sites but it'd be great if you all could ad Vizzed.com to the exception list. To make sure that users do follow through, I've made it so that the games on the site are disabled for users who have Ad Block enabled for Vizzed.com.

Users have good reason to block ads, especially with so many sites having bad ones, but the ads on Vizzed are safe, family friendly and aren't overbearing but if for some reason you really need to disable ads, then consider buying one of the Ad Block items using Viz from the Vizzed Market which you can read about here. Also keep in mind that this is more of an experimental thing to see if it'll help, if it doesn't then I'll have to compromise with a different solution.

Users will get a message once in a while as they navigate Vizzed.com reminding them to Disable Ads for Vizzed.com. This message doesn't display for guests for various reasons (it could potentially hurt search engine ranking) but it does display for both guests and users in the Play window after about 30 seconds (and it basically disables the game every time they try to play a game).

Staff : Letting you all know since a lot of users are going to be asking about this. Also, be sure to confirm for me whether it works if you're an Ad Block user (and if it does, let me know which Ad Block you're using).

If it's not already in place, you could set up a message inside the game window asking users to whitelist the site when the game doesn't load. I'd check for myself, but I'm currently on a phone while my brother and sister are taking their turn on the laptops. Just thought I'd throw that out there if it wasn't already a thing because there's bound to be a lot of confusion.

Hah-hah-hah. There's a subtle, but important (to me) difference between actually asking, and demanding. This isn't really asking: The please is just a flowery addition to make it semi-tolerable to everyone. Which is a shame, because I have on principle always refused to use sites that do this sort of thing.

This will not be any different.

I came back after years and months of bad/dying computers, terrible wifi, and no free time to Nintendo having gone more insane. Sure, nothing you can do about that that you haven't done. It just axed most of the games I was here to play.
That was fine though it limited who I could suggest to the site personally.

I can safely say most if not all the people I personally know would resent the adblock move. Enough of them run on the same principle I do.
Thus removing a majority, since it's hard enough to find people who won't download an emulator anyways. Follow?

While I'm aware adblock costs you money, and you're not obligated to allow totally free browsers.. neither are we/they required to truly support you. Selfishness is a thing in this world, and I am not ashamed to admit I dabble in it frequently. I am me.

Alatus : I wouldn't really say that selfishness is the appropriate word... The concept of the site is not a money making scheme, but an internet community for gamers that don't fit into any other particular sub group of the culture. It's a second home for a lot of us. This move was not intended to extort, but a site has to be able to support itself. Furthermore, for an amount of otherwise worthless digital currency exclusive to this site that's earned by making contributions either monetarily or in added content, you can block the adds with an item available in the new market. And all the previously removed games are still available at the affiliate site play.rom.online.com

Alatus : If it was demanding, then I'd make the entire site unavailable. When users go to play games, that sucks up bandwidth and bandwidth costs me a lot of money. The storage needed to store all of these games is also expensive.

The number of users using ad block continues to increase and my 1/3 estimate is a very conservative estimate, it could be as high as half. A site like Vizzed which doesn't sell anything and gets very few donations cannot survive when users are using ad block.

At this point I have 2 options:
1. Downsize the site (which would involve removing a big portion of the games)
or
2. Do what I've done

As soon as Nintendo went and pulled that little trick I turned my adblock off for vizzed.

Now obviously there's going to be some sort of butthurt whatevers who are gonna complain and/or leave the site, but obviously not enough to seriously hurt you.

Anyways I support this 100%, I'm not stubborn like some of the people who will probably complain about it here.

The simple and easy answer is to simply buy one of the ad-block items.

I use Ad-Block too. Until I heard that there was an item involved, I was considering much of the same response as you. To me, I don't really care that Vizzed needs me to look at ads. I block ads everywhere, and Vizzed is no exception.

The most expensive Ad-Block item is relatively cheap for any user who has utilized this site for a fair length of time. A little under 400 users have enough Viz to afford the most expensive item, to say nothing of those who want to go the cheaper route.

I understand that you, personally, do not have enough Viz to afford the item, but it's a direct result of contributing to the site, as opposed to leeching off of the RGR (which costs you nothing, but the site a lot). If you actually contributed over the nearly 4 years you've been here, we likely wouldn't be having this conversation.

I'm not sure what the point of your post is, furthermore. You claim David is making a soft threat, but your own post is essentially the exact same thing, which is a tad hypocritical. It's one thing to be selfish, but another to outright attack for the same reasons you feel you are being attacked.

Davideo7 : Its simple you can do one thing : If anyone use adblock cant play games. Adblock on vizzed is not neccesary (include adblock in market vizzed) ....I have disable adblock end everything its normal, I can navigate, I can play, I can write in forum etc etc 

Gotta hand it to you. You handled this issue a lot more mature than some other people I know about.

I used adblock. But I always had it disabled for Vizzed. This is the only site I'm letting ads on, so feel proud. I'll support you 100% on this, just as I have been doing. I might not even get the ad blocker item.

Another long time coming addition, and another applause it deserves.

I've never used ad block, though some sites do deserve it for the horrible ads they display, covering the whole screen or including audio (this last one awakes my killing intent when the full page is loaded with ads and you cannot find the single one responsible of the audio). Vizzed is quite friendly with the ads, not modifying the size of the page as the ads load, no audio, no full page ads (except on mobile, which is why I'm considering buying the mobile ad block in the market) and basically nothing that can be an annoyance when all you come here for is fun.

Of course, haters gonna hate, but there's absolutely no situation where no hater appeared. Do what you feel is right, David, at least then you will have no regrets, no matter how many haters come out of their cave.

I support this as well. While there are going to be people like Alatus who will refuse to come back because of this that can't really be considered a bad thing. If they were only costing the site money but not providing any revenue then that is a net gain.

Then there are others who will likely go, "oh, if that's the only way I can play games then so be it" and you will also have a net gain from them.

Overall this is the only logical route to go if the site is to remain viable in its current state. There are too many people getting benefits but not contributing and it has been that way for far too long.

I think I've always had ad-block off for Vizzed (for like an year I didn't even have ad-block), and while there are times where I ad-blocked vizzed because I forgot I had it on Vizzed, when I realized I had it on I always turned it off . The ads aren't that annoying, and I know that the site needs the revenue to run, so I do my part to allow the ads to run. This is one of the few sites that I have ad-block disabled, so feel proud :p. And if someone really needed the ads blocked, they could just buy the ad-block item if they've contributed.

I support this, and I hope it helps the revenue on Vizzed increase .

Hrm, I'm starting to get the message while navigating the site even though I have adblock disabled.

I tried enabling and disabling it and hopefully that works. I wandered around the site and it seems to have helped.


So, for anyone still experiencing this issue try what I did. It might not recognize that you did it before but doing it again seems to help (at least for me).

Davideo7 : I'd appreciate it if you'd change the message that appears. Right now, it requires me to click "I have disabled Adblock..." in order to continue. However, this is not a fact. I have not, because certain ads I have seen are inappropriate, and I'd rather not see them. If I could know that all ads on Vizzed would be appropriate, then I'd disable Adblock in an instant; however, almost every time I've tried this, it's not ended well. I understand you have to buckle down on costs. That's OK. And if you need to keep the ads the way they are for the greater good, that's also fine. But I will not disable Adblock if they continue to be the way they have been in the past. That's a personal choice for my own protection.

Also, I don't play games on Vizzed anymore. That part won't affect me much. If you truly need to enable ads for games, that's OK. But if I was in the position of those who wish to play games, and had to see ads that were pornographic in nature in order to play a game, I would stop in a heartbeat. As a porn addict, there really is no other good choice.

There is so much about this site that is good. It provides, for example, a safer forum than many out there on the internet. I love that about Vizzed. I always have a reason to come back. I'm grateful for that. And I hope this will always be true. If not, I'll leave, and I won't resent those that stay. You can do what you want, and I really cannot judge you poorly without judging myself poorly. I try to do what I need to, and I hope everyone else will do the same, no matter what that may be, whether it be different from what I do or not.

Anyhoo, I hope what I said doesn't seem like a rant. I don't like ranting I just wanted to share my point of view in the hope that it will spread greater understanding, and change, if necessary. Thanks for making Vizzed awesome!

geeogree : I also just had the message pop up even though AdBlock was disabled. For Davideo7's reference, I'm on Firefox with Adblock Plus.

Linkums : I had the same thing when I logged in just now even though I have disabled it. It didn't happen until I logged in again but it seems like the problem is not solved =/

I have to say, this is a good move in my opinion. But I thin we all know there's going to be rude a******* who will register just to rant on this post because they don"t understand. But I also have to say that some of the ads ARE inappropriate, showing sometimes woman in highly sexual positions with overly sized breasts. They come far and long in between, but they are there. Its the anime ads btw, cuz we all know why most people click those links in the first place. Just be careful and watch whos and what ads are coming in.
