Shantae was once an obscure game found on the Gameboy, it’s a series that I myself haven’t heard of until quite recently. It’s hard to imagine how this one obscure game and character has now become as popular as it currently is. And oh boy is the series popular, during the Smash Ballot Shantae was one of the characters that people wanted the most in the game. Seeing the reception this character has received from fans, I decided to play a game in which she is featured in. That game is the current one I am reviewing, Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse. I wasn’t sure what to expect when starting up the game as it is a 2D platformer, a genre which I am generally not too fond of, however the game managed to charm its way into my heart. The review below will go into more detail about just my feelings on the game as well as what I experienced the first time I’ve played through it. Also this review can pretty much apply to all versions of the game as they are essentially the same.

Graphics 10/10
The graphics are simply put amazing. The game is a sprite-based 2D platformer. However even though the game is made with sprites the graphics are very detailed, well as detailed as one can get with a game that is made with sprites, as you can see with the cracks on buildings.

Another reason why this section is so high is due to the portraits. When a character speaks, a nicely drawn portrait of the character appears showing there’s more to the graphics then the sprites. These portraits also show expression every once and a while changing to show what the character speaking is feeling.

Sound 10/10
From the title screen you’re greeted with an epic tune that gives you the idea of just what you’re in for in terms of the music. For the most part, the music is upbeat fitting with the more happy tone of the game and the character herself. The music sounds like it is heavily influenced by Arabian music, which fits in with the theme the game pulls off with the first area being Arabian influenced. Tan-line island also has an Egyptian sounding tune to it, fitting because the area is in a desert. So overall the music does well to fit what each area is trying to convey. And each track does sound amazing and are songs that you can just dance to.

Addictiveness 5/10
This is unfortunately going to have a pretty low rating. There really is no reason to replay this game, unless of course you like it that much and don’t mind playing through the same story over and over. Because it’s a linear game, not much changes with each playthrough. Sure, there is a different ending depending on if you get 100% completion rating but that’s about it.

Sure, the Steam version has achievements and if you’re a collector of achievements then there might be a small amount of replayability so that you could collect them all. That’s not to say that the game isn’t fun, oh no. It’s a great, it’s just not one that can be played over and over again because it’d end up getting stale.

Story 8/10
For a 2D platformer game, it is actually pretty story driven. Granted the story isn’t some grand epic adventure that you’d expect in an rpg, but it is nice to see a game of this nature to have a story.
The game starts off in Shantae’s village, called Scuttle Town, as it’s being attacked. She of course goes to save the village. Afterword she meets up with a past villain known as Risky Boots who believes Shantae is responsible for stealing her men and items. As it turns out, dark magic has possessed Risky’s men and as such believes that the person responsible was not in fact Shantae but could potentially be the Pirate Master. The story follows Shantae as she goes from island to island destroying what gives the Pirate Master power to prevent him from reviving.

Yeah, a very simple story but one that works for the type of game that is being portrayed. Even though the story is simple, it isn’t a bad one. The reason why I am giving it a high rating however is due to the characters which help to move the story along. Shantae herself is fun to play as, while Risky is a nice temporary partner who, while good at the moment doesn’t fit in with the role of a hero. The side characters are all good fun as well

Depth 6/10
The game isn’t that large, it’s about as big as a 2D platformer usually gets. There is more to do in the game then the actual main plotline however. There are collectables to get so if you’re looking to 100% the game you will spend more time looking for each item. You have to collect all of the dark magic from the cacklebats, the heart squids, and all of the upgrades that make Shantae stronger in the adventure. The backtracking to past areas to get these collectibles and in some cases to get items to continue the story also do much to lengthen the game a little. Still even with all of that it is a pretty short game.

Difficulty 7/10
Oh boy. This game is bearable enough at the start, if you’re good at platformers and know how not to get hit you will breeze right through. Even if you’re bad at these kinds of games, like me, the monsters usually drop items and hearts that give you health when consumed. However at a certain point, there are hordes of enemies that hit hard and are difficult to dodge. They also rarely drop items forcing you to stock up on potions beforehand. It is because of this that I myself consider the game to be a bit difficult.

Overall 7.7/10
Overall this game is great. I’m usually not a big fan of these kind of games, so truth be told I didn’t think I would enjoy this game as much as I did. However I did fall in love with the game, because on the surface it may seem like just another 2d Platforming game but once you look deeply into the game there is just so much more waiting for you. The characters are cute and charming, there is some amount of humor in the game, it looks amazing, and there’s just so much about the game that makes it a great experience. The game is a charming one and is highly recommended to play especially for those looking for a new platforming experience.
