Everyone should have a favorite genre, whether it's science Fiction, Mystery, Drama, or whatever, but some people might also have a genre that they can't stand, that they simply don't like.

I simply can't stand Non-Fiction books. Whether it's a historical book, a biography, or an educational book, I would never read one on my own. Sure, it's possible that I like them after I read them, but I would need to be forced to read it first, like in class.

What's yours? What genre do you like the least or simply don't like at all?

My least favorite genre has to be Romance. I don't know if this counts, but I hate most books and movies with too much romance.

zanderlex : I actually like a lot of Non-Fiction books. I like memoirs and biographies and stuff like that.

Horror.  I don't believe I've ever read a horror book (although I have read smaller stories before) from start to finish.  I tend to stay away from the genre, except the few that give insight into personality, and aren't explicitly built just to horrify, but to teach.  I haven't really gotten into that yet, though.  I may in the future.

I used to loathe non-fiction with a passion, but that's changed over the past few years, and after I developed a closer relationship with Christ.  Now, I rather enjoy (the right) non-fiction books when I have the time to read them.

I'd have to say that my least favorite genres though, would have to be decided between horror and romance.  Most horror books are either just... demented, or they contain supernatural / demonic events that I don't want anything to do with.

supernerd117 :
Maybe you're describing psychological thrillers?  I don't typically mind those either...

As for romance, most of them are just absolutely trashy... or just... ew.  Gushy.  Corny. Stupid. Obsessive....

I almost want to say romance enthralls me far less than any other genre.

Singelli : Not so much that.  More like "The Cask of Amontillado" by Edgar Allen Poe.  It gives insight into both the characters of the murderer and the murdered.  It not only arouses horror, but expands it by showing the sorry state of the murdered individual.  In this case, it is just as much a horror story as a character study.  It's not trying to shove horror down our throats with use of blood and gore and the like.  In this case, horror arouses naturally from the actions of the murderer, the murdered, and that the murderer "got away with his crime".  We see, though, that he did not simply get away with his crime.  He tries to justify it, but we see that he is still panged by guilt.  Therefore, it reveals the character of a murderer.  Murder is not simply in the story for murder's sake.

I dislike horror everything.

Movies, Games, and especially books. I normally read books either in school or at night before I go to bed, so a horror novel isn't the best thing that you can read before going to sleep for the night.

Plus they just straight up scare me.

I just can't stand reading anything that isn't true because I usually don't find them entertaining as others do. That's why when I read you will only ever catch me reading science fiction learning new stuff. I can't stand reading nonfiction books that turn out to eventually be fiction because of a lack of evidence it is a waste of time and effort. In terms of genres it's easily drama I would rather put myself out there on social media to experience it rather than read it.

I really am not interested in Non-Fiction mostly because it has to do with real things, I like books because they can do things reality can't, so I'm annoyed when they tell me things I already know.

XD I read just about anything and everything except for horror stories where the author is intentionally trying to scare you (same for movies, too). It’s not that I dislike the genre, it’s more…

Let’s put it this way. The last time I went to a realistic haunted house where most of the props were real (e.g. real chainsaws and stuff), the 2 guys and 1 girl in our group ended up pushing me to the front of the line because the girl was afraid of everything, one guy couldn’t stand clowns and the other guy that was our leader ended up trying to smell my long hair j/k hiding his face behind my shoulders and screaming every few seconds. Because there was a rule in place that said we couldn’t touch anything in the haunted house just like they (the actors and actresses) weren’t allowed to touch us either, I think I actually unnerved a few of them by getting too close. D= All I wanted to see was how the clowns did their makeup and what the red/brown stuff was that they put on their chainsaws. =/ They ended up backing away from me and freaking out a bit.

I had never been to one of those kinds of official haunted houses before and it was very realistic so it was a lot of fun, but people always think I’m crazy because I laugh the entire time I’m on roller coasters or in a haunted house. I guess they just don’t have what I’d be scared of in those haunted houses. Simply put, horror doesn’t appeal to me because it’s just not scary. Any of my dreams pwn those stories any day, especially when the dreams are bad. I’d say some of the things humans can’t normally see are way scarier (and I’m not talking about supernatural stuff either).

As a child, I used to love reading fiction and novels/stories, but over time, I’ve found that creativity really is hard to come by nowadays even for science fiction, so I’ve taken up reading more nonfiction books to learn about the mysteries of this world. =D It might sound a bit counterintuitive, but after all this time, I do think reality is actually almost always stranger and more interesting than fiction. I attribute that to the fact that stories are limited by the imagination of its writers, while the beings/things that are real in this world have unlimited potential since they’re acted upon by so many forces and beings all at once, all the time. Even as a group, the imaginations of a few people simply can’t process everything that reality has to offer. Then, there’s the fact that there are so many unexplained mysteries out there that have yet to be understood, and each of them is no less fascinating than the rest. I used to think it would be wonderful if we had the ability to live forever to see all the changes that take place on Earth (think Lucy), but then I saw the plight of the jellyfish that mature and turn back into babies just to mature again, over and over. oO;; Certainly, they’re essentially immortal, but still… (Be careful what you wish for. XD )

This is why my least favorite genres now would probably actually be the ones I used to love so much (with the exception of the horror genre which has just never been very effective on me).

To all the people that say, “but magic is cooler!” I’d just like to point out that we’ve been flying in large metal dragons (that roar and scare you into thinking it’s going to crash) since the invention of the airplane and we’ve been waving magic wands and saying magic words since the invention of the remote control and the precursors to Siri. Also, there are real life spells and words people can use to influence or mesmerize others [“I love you,” and “buy this because it will help (save) your (love) life”], and whenever we buy into the latest fad, we’ve just fallen under someone’s spell. This world is already magic; what happens each day just depends on how you use the magic inside of you to interact with everything else.

Thus, for now, I'll say my favorite genres are most everything except for my least favorite genres which are horror and some types of romance novels (the ones that don't give much thought to anything else except relationships and *Personal Auto-Correct deleted this word because it did not want to mention this on a family-friendly site* ). However, I've always loved comedy so I'm pretty sure I'll continue to enjoy comedies even years from now. Yes, I do often think that laughter is the best medicine.

Yuna1000 : Wow. After reading that post, I'm not sure whether I should laugh, cry, or whatever. Lol though, if those guys were so scared of the house, I don't think they even needed a rule not to touch stuff.

I was going to say Romance, but I've read plenty of romance novels I liked. XD

It's hard to say, I read just about any genre, to me, I a book doesn't catch my interest just because of what genre it is. I look for books that just look like something I'd be interested in. Sometimes I'll read a book just because it's written by an author I like. Just whatever draws my attention when I pick it up.

I do grow bored of books that go on for pages and pages of description, I don't mind description, but I like plot advancement much more. And there a few authors I absolutely love because of the way they write their dialogue. When the dialogue is very well written, advances the story, and we can get a little insight on what the speakers are thinking, to me, that's the best part of the book. That's how most of the dialogue was in Dune, by Frank Herbert, in my opinion. Good book.

Unlike some people who posted here, I find some non-fiction books to be really interesting. As long as they don't just have information and in general are really dry, I would actually consider non-fiction one of my favorite genres.

My least favorite would have to be horror. I just don't like horror at all in general, and books are no exception. If I was reading something that was supposed to scare me and was really descriptive with horror stuff, I would be disturbed and put the book down. Not to mention that I am rather squeamish and like to avoid anything that could keep me up at night.

Romance makes me want to stab the book with a shovel. Very brutal and very unclean. Stab. Death.

It's just that the themes are so tiring and lame, they can't really capture something of meaning. the anime Future Diary had a secondary plot as romance and they made it so twisted that it actually worked. If books could do that, then sure I'd read romance. But until then, no.

yoshirulez! : Hey don't be like that, some Romance is good and exciting, and as of late, the genre has been getting better and better, and it's all thanks to Twilight. Kist think of it, ever since the book came out, they have been inspiring people, they have been inspiring even the worst of authors to come up with better love stories than it.

I like romance that's involved as a layer beneath the main story though, id never read one that's just only romance lol.

Does religious count? Like I mean if you're a religious person that's cool you can do what you want but I don't really care much for religion. I know a lot of books about religion so that's why I thought it was an available choice.

It's hard to say, I guess Sci-fi, I prefer books that are based in older times with accurate technology.
There are so many alien books floating around it makes me feel overwhelmed, I would have said horror but I actually love Goosebumps.

I'm more into um still the kids story section with Dr Seuss books and roald dahl. I won't be able to like...get into the ones other people do and I prefer to read ones that like works with what I like to read. Instead of reading ones I wouldn't like or leave me confused in a way. So that's why I stay with the types of books that I can understand.

I haven't read every genre of books, but from what I have read I dislike non-fiction books the most. I'm not as entertained by them since I get bored of them easily. Also, they can be hard for me to follow because of my short attention span for them, making me confused as I read them XD
