With the Nintendo NX expected to be released sometime in either 2016 or 2017, there have been plenty of rumors surrounding the new system. One of these rumors was made today by Dr. Serkan Toto, the CEO of Kantan Games, who said on twitter that "Bandai Namco is currently developing several NX titles. Smash Bros is
planned to be a launch title. I am not sure about the date".

According to NintendoLife.com, Serkan Toto is a "typically reliable source", so hearing this makes me believe that we could very well see a new Smash Bros game for the NX. I wonder if it will actually be the 5th installment in the ongoing series, or possibly another version of Smash Bros 4 with all the DLC included? I personally think that we'll know whether this rumor is true or not during E3, where Nintendo will probably reveal all the details on the NX, such as launch titles and a release date.

So do you believe this rumor? Do you think that a Smash Bros game will be released as a launch title for the NX? I'd like to hear your thoughts on this article.

I really think a new Smash would be an excellent idea for the NX launch, though it would be a bit closer to the last smash than usual. Still it would be a nice addition to the launch lineup and would certainly help spur on the initial sales. Nintendo could very well be looking to convince their loyal fans to bite as early as possible to increase interest from others who see it taking off quickly.

As for whether it'll be a Smash 5 or a Smash 4 remake with the DLC, I'm not too well versed with modern Nintendo practices in remakes, but seeing how they did with the NES SMB games and SMB all stars, then SMB All stars + Super Mario World, then releasing it again on VC, I'd say a Smash 4 with all DLC is a good possibility. It hasn't been too long since Smash 4, and a Smash 5 would likely be too rushed. It's been too long since Smash 4 for a straight port with graphics touches though, so a Twilight Princess scenario is probably out of the question as well.

Also speaking of Twilight Princess, I think they should make Zelda U a Wii U AND NX game. To have a Smash and Zelda game at launch would make for a very strong launch lineup and would certainly encourage people to buy. I would also love to see a Mario Bros. at launch as well. If they could do those three things then I'd say the NX would have one of the strongest launch lineups ever, which is something Nintendo hasn't had in a long time. That's vital in giving gamers the impression that this will be a good console, and worth their time.

Nice catch on this article by the way.

I'm really hoping this is a valid source. Super Smash Bros. Melee was a launch title and made up for a lot of the Gamecube's shortcomings; there is no reason for them not to do it now if they can, especially since the NX has sparked a large amount of polarity from my experiences discussing it, with people on two very extreme sides over how the NX will fare.

I am expecting a Smash 4 with all DLC if that does end up being the case (maybe even Smash Run console version? C'mon, almost no one likes Smash Tour), but I don't discount the possibility of a full-fledged Smash 5 game. After all, the original Super Smash Bros. and Super Smash Bros. Melee had only a two-year gap in between releases (1999-2001), if we're talking Japan release dates, so the consideration of one is fair game, even if that was a decade and a half ago that they had the releases that close.

Nintendo needs to take some lessons from its retro kingpin days. Sega's consoles were known for being more powerful, and yet Nintendo still won those early console wars due to their superior lineups. They knew how to release consoles. As I already stated, the GameCube's flaws were covered up by a console-saver. Nintendo's strong suit is in the games they release, so it would be in their best interest to start off with a strong launch lineup of titles, as opposed to making "promises" for strong games.

I am hoping that this Smash Bros thing will be Smash 4 with DLC. It's...Way too early to be making another Smash Bros. We haven't even gotten the final round of DLC yet! Hopefully, if this is just Smash 4 on the NX, it will be all the DLC included with the base game.

Eirinn : I am absolutely certain that Zelda Wii U is only going to become Zelda NX. I don't get what's with Nintendo and announcing games 5 years before a working prototype is even ready yet. It's super frustrating!

I wonder what the character limit on this thing is.

Hopefully they actually upgrade the graphics.

I mean SSBU looked very similar to SSBB in that regard.

And I'd like to see some more characters like Knuckles, tails, they could be really good for the roster.

It's not impossible but very unlikely considering Sm4sh is still very relevant and with DLC still being released it seems way too early for Nintendo to release the next smash game. I don't think they would release the next smash game so soon from now potentially without hyping it up a ton anyway. More likely than not it's like you said a sort of definitive edition of Sm4sh, with the dlc and possibly a slight upgrade to the graphics.

SWTerra : Well that's true, but also a key point for SNES was it's securing of the majority of third party games. Nintendo consoles have been on a steady decline in sales since the NES (with the exception of Wii), and Nintendo seems to be unable to stop it. Again, they have lost more and more third party support with each system, and I personally think that's a big part of why they're declining. If the NX can net that support like it's trying to do, I think it stands a chance. I must admit though, it's seeming more and more like another Dreamcast: a monster of a machine for it's time, but it flopped because SEGA put it off too long and had slipped too far.

Plus people are getting hyped over this NX hybrid thing, but that means nothing. Look at the PS4/PS Vita combo, it did the exact same and yet failed in the West. What will make NX different? And worse, if it's a single unit (as opposed to PS4 and PS Vita) it will likely hold the power back. And can you imagine the cost of buying one? Some are speculating $500 - $600. No way that will float. I'm leaving the hype train, a very sad man unfortunately. Hopefully Nintendo proves me wrong.

A user of this : Whether you can believe him or not, I don't know, but someone from Nintendo (either Miyamoto, or the Zelda creator) recently said that the next Zelda game will definitely be on the Wii U. That's why I changed from it being an NX exclusive to it being on both. I think that's a collosal error though, as it'll only hold the title back, and we've been waiting on this one for years already. Don't water it down on us, Nintendo. :/

Hopefully, Nintendo will have a new Smash Bros as a launch title, for their sake. We know all too well of their falling behind in the console market, and this could be a great move to help keep them competing. I haven't seen all that much on the new NX, but hopefully it will be a positive move in terms of innovation for Nintendo. Do I believe it will happen? No, because I'm not sure how much "business sense" Nintendo has left. Do I hope it will happen? Yes, both for a new Smash Bros title, and to hopefully keep Nintendo afloat, if only for another generation or two...
