Ooh, this is my strong suit.

A good way to start is to simply look for online Smash groups for wherever you live (usually the best start is to look for state or region, if applicable). Most everywhere has a Facebook group, as well as some other social media groups, that consistently post information about tournaments happening in that particular area. As a nice side, it's also a really good way to get to know other competitors and get some good info from people; every region usually has at least one top dog who's more than willing to help you if you ask them questions.

Other than that, you can try to search for tournaments through SmashBoards. That was how I started getting into the Melee scene two years ago, although I no longer use my SmashBoards account.

Alternatively for Smash 4 (if that's the Smash game you're referring to, you can look for online tournaments if your internet is strong enough. They're very solid stepping stones and give you a really nice indication of where you stand as an entry-level competitor (most of the better competitors don't usually compete in these tournaments, since they prefer to go to locals for the most part or practice in person).

TheFadedWarrior : You're competitive, too, right? Care to help me out?

Chart : Go to https://www.reddit.com/r/smashbros/wiki/facebook then press ctrl+f and type Texas (assuming that's where you live, because that's what your profile says). Pick the one nearest to you. 99% of tournies are announced on Facebook.

And, like SWTerra said, there is also SmashBoards. Texas tournaments are listed under Southwest: http://smashboards.com/forums/tournament-listings.51/?prefix_id=4
