So I came across this little trick while grinding final fantasy VII to improve my chances of at least holding my own against the emerald WEAPON, before I figured out I couldn't beat it anyway without the underwater materia...and yes I did try to kill it with its timer on.
Apart from the islands south of fort condor, the only real place to level up was northern continent, bar the sub base under water which was ok until Marlboro introduced me to bad breath (which is needed for enemy skill) which put me off levelling here after continually dying due to fighting without ribbons. Remembering what a friend had once said, that the Master Tonberrys morphed into ribbons I went on a mission to the northern crater to get ribbons so I could level up without death by Bad breath death. By this point anything that would aid my levelling speed, even though actually getting to the knife weilding wombles of Satan is a long descent to the bottom of the crater, its like the last room before your final decent to Sephiroth and the end of the game and is a mission in itself, just to come back out if I've not been merked off by said wombles, to go back to Marlboro to level up...to go back to Emerald to get my butt kicked again it seemed the lesser of two evils. Plus if I survived my ascent I would be that little bit closer to the dream of kicking WEAPONS immortal behind off the planet forever and I could finally defeat Sephiroth and know that this time I smashed ff7 like a true hero of the planet and not the weak SOLDIER that might as well stayed in the lifestream carrying on trying remember who he really wasn't in the first place.
ANYWAY....As I battled my way to the place where they reside, where the water's green and the enemy is plentiful, I stumbled across an enemy that I could not hit without feeding it elixir. Magic pots.... I did not know at the time what I had truly come across as the first time I visited the cave I ran bACk out without paying them that much attention due to the pitiful level I arrived at the crater. This time I'd spent an extra few months, three I think, getting my level to a point where the caves were easier to navigate without dying unexpectedly from running into dragons or Edward scissor hands evil mates or Tonberrys & the rest of the beasts that make me hate Cloud for not being Zack & not reminding me to save when the party first split in the bottom of the cave & that even tho this is the million nth time I've played this game & even got a tattoo that leaving the save crystal anywhere BUT THERE is a really bad idea as I still have to get out again, which is still touching cloth at best, I'd realised with enough elixir the elusive magical pots not only level me up like a demon that I could, create as much materia as my grinding could handle!!! Finally I'd found the perfect place to sit and waste months seeing how many counters & knights of the Round, MP absorb plus the rest, I could create. Also with a little thought into my choice of clobber...  that materia soon started to multiply at X2 the speed. X3 in some cases like Cloud and Cid who have triple growth weapons Apocalypse & I think the Scimitar (located in the forest of the ancients and the sub base of DOOM) & due to the pots God like growth potential, a little gentle persuasion from enemy lure plus the Three Bouncing Tangerines of Divine Justice (which I met also levelling up here) I soon became God hard myself with the power & might of a counter that the term overkill doesn't even make sense once you realise mime & KOTR have also taken a master like appearance. Having your dinner plus after eights is seriously plausible without worrying about Cloud & his fellow immortals losing to the horrors which dwell in the deathly shadows of the north.
So there you have it. My little contribution to hopefully helping my fellow Hero's of Avalanche United skip some of the torment of this epic classic. I've only lit a path for you because you seriously lose a lot of life to ff7 & once I found this out I wish someone would of done the same as the last two WEAPONS are ridiculous regardless of your resolve....and even though you might think this helps your still gonna wish Cloud forgot to tie up his golden chocobo & was left to rot on the island of KOTR instead of fighting Ruby & Emerald. And hopefully you've not spent too much time fighting them without the necessary underwater materia & you've formulated some sort of strategy to face Ruby without losing all hope of saving the planet from meteor..... and just remember also that maybe death isn't  such a bad idea sometimes as there is always a final attack. So until the next time squaresoft exspect us to drop everything to save the planet, I might possibly share some more of my final battle knowledge to aid you in the struggle against Ruby, who really is a ripping off relentlessly evil son of the Goat Lord known as SOD.

local mods : this looks more like a thread for Game Discussion.

Actually, at least for the underwater weapon, there exists a much simpler solution. I saw a Youtube video where the author killed it with one shot of Vincent's instant death weapon (death penalty?)
