What sort of game do you want to make?  If it's an RPG, you might want to look into RPG Maker.  It's a program that allows you to build your own RPG, but gives you a lot of freedom and the tools to help you make one.  But it's not strictly limited to RPGs.  For example, the game "To the Moon" was made in RPG Maker.  It's a story-based game with interactive gameplay.  Occasionally, RPG Maker VX Ace and other RPG Maker variants end up in bundles.  You might want to keep your eye out for one.

Another game designer tool that is often featured in bundles is Axis Game Factory.  I don't know how good the quality of it is, but it often is featured in bundles that are $10 or less.  You might want to take a look at that and prepare for a sale if it looks like something that is good to use.

I'm actually not sure how FNAF was made.  I don't know who could help you with that.  Maybe you could contact Scott (the maker of the game) himself?  I dunno.

What genre was FNAF? I mean gameplay wise? Was it point and click or what?

As of right now, the question is pretty broad. I mean most Indie games have several people making them, and most AAA games have 100+. What I'm trying to say is, are you wanting to make an entire game alone, or is there a specific role you want to play in game designing, such as programmer, artist, audio designer, animator, writer, etc?

I don't recommend trying to make one all alone, but it can be done if you're determined enough. As tools and such go, I would say go for a more widely used engine such as Unity or Unreal, as these will allow you to make small projects or full scale epic games. I personally use Unity and love it, but have no experience with Unreal so I can't say. And before anyone suggests Game Maker, let me say that I tried it and found it very unsatisfactory, but that's me.

Finally, bear in mind you'll need to learn how to program in specific computer programming languages (like C# for example).

Eirinn :
supernerd117 :
FNaF was actually a point and click game, yeah.

It also doesn't have 3D, it's all 2D animations with a certain camera that makes it look 3Dish.

Clever sure but eeh

Anyways thats all I have to contribute here

EDIT: wanted to include that the first 2 aren't 3D. the rest are, I think.

This is going to seem a bit off the mark but I highly encourage you to read a lot of fiction books in your spare time.  The part that makes most games really successful is a compelling story.  Shooter games have their own audience but if you want to start designing for Steam games or making something for yourself, read books and understand the development of a story.  You can apply that to the game and engage people more successfully than creating something repetitious.  The story-telling is half the point.

I also recommend reading blogs about creating games and game development.  I'm sure a library has tons of information near you.  I'm sure you can find other websites with real professionals.  No offense to Vizzed.com, it's a bunch of pre-teens and teenage kids.  The few adults don't strike me as professional game developers.

Youtube will have thousands of videos.  Find the ones you like and start working.  And get in touch with developers.

Good hunting.

I've heard GameSalad is a good program for beginners, but that being said I have no experience with it myself. It's supposed to be free and extremely easy to use without any knowledge of coding or the like. Other than that my bit of advice would be to properly pace yourself in its creation. That meaning don't create a bunch of stuff you're not ready for, be it concept art, characters, or anything like that until the actual game play mechanics have been worked out. For testing a game all you need is blocks that you can tell apart, and then polish it all when the game mechanics are finely tuned. If you end up going through with it all, I wish you luck in this endeavor

I recommend learning as many programming languages as possible. Mostly because how are you going to make a game if you don't know how to make it so the software can read it. So Yeah, try to learn some languages and perhaps you could make that happen.

sonic23 : I'd suggest finding a way to go to College and get a degree for it.
That is the most surefire way to become one.
