I have been wanting to play Civilization II on my computer for a while, but it is so "old" that the CD-ROM does not recognize the disk. I have looked for advice over the Internet about "retro compatibility", but to no avail. What is the way to actually "change" my computer so I can play these older games?

I was going to suggest GOG but they don't have any of the Civilization games.

I also checked steam but they only go back to civilization 3.

Not sure what else there really is to do to help on this one.

When you're saying that the computer doesn't read the Civilization II disk, so you can't access the files? I was going to suggest to get a virtual PC so you can run an older OS that is compatible with the game but if your CD-ROM can't recognize the disk, this would make my suggestion completely mute.

I'm not sure what release type it is, but it's available on -please no advertising other sites- , just set yourself up with Dosbox and a nice front-end.  Otherwise, have a look for the disc image file (.iso etc.) and run it with daemon tools-lite.

gtwalq : Thank you, I will definitely have a look.

Andrewl3779 : not quite. I can still explore the CD, but the auto-launch prompts a message saying that the game is not compatible.

janus : I think I had a similar situation with The House of The Dead 1, which came out in 1998. Running the set-up would give me the error that my computer is incompatible with 16bit software or something along those lines. You can check out this site which helped me successfully install THOTD, since I haven't got Civilization II, I don't know its setup version and what you should install, but this should give you enough information.

janus : Alternatively, you can play it on PSX here on vizzed.
DOSbox probably won't work since its a Windows game....so you probably have to use compatibility mode or as Andrew suggested, a virtual machine.... but then that means you need to get an installer of an older OS

janus : An ISO is just an image of the disc. You would have the same problem as with the actual disc. So, you would still need to find a solution to running the game on a modern PC/OS.

janus : I know this game was re-released for Windows XP years later. I wonder if your license will let you download the newer files?

If not, I would suggest either emulating the old version of windows using VMware on your computer.

Also, Internet Archive also has a ton of old PC games that you can play online as a last resort. Although Im' not sure if they have this game available.

janus : You own a copy of it right? Well torrenting it should be legal so that could circumnavigate the reading disc part.
Then install it in Administrator mode with Windows XP Service Pack 2 compatability.
