We all assumed it would eventually happen, but on Wednesday, it finally did, Star Wars The Force Awakens broke the U.S. Box Office record of $760 Million held by Avatar for the last 6 years and is now past $780 Million. Even though the movie won't be breaking the record for biggest 4th weekend ever, and will probably fall $20-25 Million back from that, it should still pass the $800 Million mark by the end of this weekend or on Monday perhaps.

The movie is actually slowing down a lot but still has a lot of punch left in the bowl, even though it started off with huge leads over all the other big all time movies like Jurassic World, it has slowed down to the point where those other movies have made more at this point. For instance, Jurassic World on it's 22nd day made $1 Million more than Star Wars on its 22nd day, same goes for the 21st day. However, if The Force can keep up with what Jurassic World has made at the later stages in their careers on a day by day basis, it's possible that The Force can make another $110-140 Million in the U.S. before it's done, putting it above $900 Million.

Even though The Force is now the 4th biggest worldwide movie of all time, it's kind of failing in the foreign markets with $820 Million, which is still a lot, yet Jurassic World, Titanic, Avatar, and Furious 7 combined to average $1.4 Billion each overseas, but with The Force opening in China, it's possible that it can still make another $200-300 Million overseas to crack $1-1.1 Billion.

Under the best case scenarios for U.S. and overseas markets, it's possible that the movie should easily be able to crack $2 Billion worldwide. Not only would it be just the 3rd movie to reach that feat, it would be the first movie to reach that mark that wasn't directed by James Cameron.

If the movie can keep up the pace above Jurassic World in U.S. Markets and China proves to be a good market consitently over time, it's possible that the film might even crack the $1 Billion U.S. mark, and pass Titanic for the 2nd biggest worldwide movie of all time.

I'm really glad that it's the top movie. I really enjoyed watching it. I've already seen it twice in 3D Imax. I'm sure I'll wind up seeing it a handful of more times before it leaves the theater.

I'm not so surprised that it wound up being the top movie but I AM surprised in how fast it was able to accomplish the feat.

Jordanv78 : Yeah, it was unbelievable in IMAX 3D, and all the speed records it broke were remarkable. I liked it so much that I had already pre ordered the movie on Playstation Store so I can play it on my Vita the day it comes out for it. I even bought the OST already. Loved that as well.

So much for piracy causing the decline of Hollywood, as they complained about at the turn of the century...

Anyway I am surprised it was able to be so popular. Sure, it IS "Star Wars" but considering how Lucas spoiled it with the prequels I thought the hype would be much less. Let us hope Disney can at least keep the level of (relative) quality for the other movies if they ever get produced.

janus : It's not actually as popular as the hype made it out to be. Sure, it broke all of these records in record time, but the original estimate was that the movie would obliterate every record and even be the first to crack 3 Billion, which it's only at about 50% to.

I thought that this movie was great, really introduced the new and the old in a way that fans of the franchise would enjoy. I can't wait for the next movie to come out in 2017.

They will for sure make at least 3 of these movies. I'm sure Disney is happy to recoup a lot of what they paid for LucasFilms already with the first movie. Lol

zanderlex : the expectations were THAT high? Wow. Nevertheless, the revenues it amassed surely beat any movie one its first release.

The movie made a bit more than what was expected over the weekend to pass the 800 Million mark and ended up being the 2nd biggest 4th weekend in history, just a bit behind Avatar. If the movie takes number 2 for biggest 5th weekend, it will pass 850 Million possibly next wednesday.

Over the weekend, the movie finally hit the $900 Million mark and also became the 3rd movie ever to crack 2 Billion.
