If you somehow haven't heard, AGDQ (Awesome Games Done Quick) is a week-long non-stop speedrunning for charity marathon organized by SpeedDemosArchive and streamed to http://twitch.tv/gamesdonequick (or http://gamesdonequick.com for a less toxic chat). In the past, they've raised over $1 million for charity over the course of the week-long event.

Anyway, I this year I was lucky enough to get accepted to play during the "Awful Games Done Quick" block and so I'll be speedrunning King of Kings: The Early Years, an unlicensed Christian NES game.

Whether you watch or donate doesn't affect me at all; it's just for charity (Prevent Cancer Foundation, this year). You can check http://gamesdonequick.com/schedule to see what time I'll be playing (it might shift a little if they get behind/ahead of schedule.)

But yeah, besides me it's a really cool event, so post about your favorite runs here!

One of the highlights so far for me was when they sang Disney songs during Kingdom Hearts.

Cool, I I'm free when you are streaming then I might stop by for a bit and see what's going on. I never actually heard of this thing so I'm gonna start looking things up about it. I usually don't know much about these charity streams and stuff aside for the ones that are done or worked by youtubers that I know.

What are you doing to yourself, dude?! It's obvious to me that you either have no soul or it's already run away with you doing that sort of stuff to it... That game really is awful, so it's a good pick for them. Maybe I'll catch it, but since I'm starting school already, I'm not too certain on it.

Speaking of GDQ, I'm also attempting to find a spot for running Kirby and the Amazing Mirror. I've heard that selection has been getting very strict, though. I was talking to Trihex when I met him at Smash the Record (a Smash-oriented charity event in Orlando) and started conversing with him. I was making comments about trying for a spot, and he pretty much warned me that I'd better have a very superb run.

I mean, so far, for not having even practiced the run for a whole year yet, I've gotten my single-segment time down to below 45 minutes, while the record set on Speed Demos Archive is 40:38. I know those five minutes or so are a big deal, but that time is also the result of many mistakes that I have yet to fix in my run and optimize, which I estimate are almost 6 or so minutes total, and even more. Hopefully, I can get in for SGDQ. That's definitely my hope.

SWTerra : Wow! Nice. Getting within 5 minutes of the SDA time for a game as popular as Kirby is good progress. I'd say it's definitely within reach for you to get into SGDQ. And that's cool that you got to talk to Trihex. I've been compiling a list of people I'm hoping to meet at AGDQ. Hopefully it's not too weird since I tend to lurk a lot in chat and they probably wouldn't even remember me in many cases.

Linkums : I think the best advice to give to you (and this is something I do pretty easily myself) is to just talk. Don't try to treat them any differently than you would anyone else you meet, and just converse. Trust me, gaming pros are almost always looking for conversation with people. You can talk about how much you enjoy their runs and stuff, and that's fine; just don't go the next level and obsess over it.

Since we're talking about talking to those kinds of people, I just have to let out right now what happened the first time I met and talked to Mew2King (if you're unaware, he's one of the "Gods of Melee," well known for his dedication to the game and unreal knowledge of frame data. He also plays Brawl and Smash 4 rather well). It was pretty recent, just this past winter break, and he actually approached me as I was practicing my Kirby and the Amazing Mirror run. He attacked it with puns and from there we were conversing quite a bit about other stuff. When I asked why he even came to watch this over playing friendlies in Smash, he was just like "this looks interesting." He even went and tried to play it a bit, and let me tell you, his dedication is amazing. He didn't stop asking me questions as he was playing. "What abilities are the best?" "What moves are the best and what's the best situation for them?" "Why is this move better than that one?"

SWTerra : That's what I was planning. I have met TheMexicanRunner in the past, who isn't as hugely well known as Trihex or Mew2King, but it was still pretty cool to meet him. I'll try not to be awkward.

That's really cool that you were able to chat with M2K like that though; sounds like he's a pretty nice guy.

Linkums : Yeah. Granted, Mew2King does have Asperger's, so you actually have to be pretty patient with him at times due to his social awkwardness. But, as someone who can get just as awkward in large settings, I had no problem adapting to it. He's definitely such a nice guy, though. He's fun to be around, for sure.

I doubt I'll be able to make it, unfortunately. I'd have been down otherwise, but not that late tomorrow night. Even though I don't have any early classes on Thursday, I still would rather sleep early. This MIGHT change, but it's unlikely.

I can't blame you guys, I wouldn't stay up for someone's run at that time of night either unless it was like my family member or best friend ever. I'll post a link to the VOD sometime after I'm done.

Again, I still might. After all, King of Kings is kind of like Fester's Quest in my awful games category; it's a game that's caused way too much harm to me overall. I've played such games too much to ignore them.

Also, please tell me that you'll show on-stream that falling will actually never get you a Game Over. As you probably know already, the only way to actually die is to run out of health.

SWTerra : Hehe, yup, that'll probably come up at some point. Depending on how the run goes, I may end up dying to an enemy on purpose to refill my health quicker than answering questions. And if I fall off on one of the levels with "bosses", I can note how you only have to refight the bosses if you die to an enemy and not if you "die" from falling into a pit.

Linkums : Good. That, I feel is the most entertaining aspects of those awful game runs. A good example is a Super Pitfall run that was done I think the previous year. I mean, yeah, there's still an attempt at speeding through those games, but at the same time, it's about the enjoyability of the runs, too. Just remember to have fun!

I went on and I watched a couple of the other guys to see what it was like and it was pretty cool. I would have donated if I could like I have in the past but I couldn't. Still wish that I would be able to watch yours but there's no way I would be able to be up at that time, let alone have access to a computer and internet that late.

Davideo7 : Just about from your post time, yes. It's starting at about 2:30 AM server time, if I'm doing my basic mental calculations right (or I'm doing them the wrong way and it's at 4:30 AM server time...pretty sure I'm one hour ahead, though).

Vizzed.com is very expensive to keep alive! The Ads pay for the servers.

Vizzed has 3 TB worth of games and 1 TB worth of music.  This site is free to use but the ads barely pay for the monthly server fees.  If too many more people use ad block, the site cannot survive.

We prioritize the community over the site profits.  This is why we avoid using annoying (but high paying) ads like most other sites which include popups, obnoxious sounds and animations, malware, and other forms of intrusiveness.  We'll do our part to never resort to these types of ads, please do your part by helping support this site by adding Vizzed.com to your ad blocking whitelist.
