janus :

It's not a "huge" number, but it's a number significant enough that it's an issue to me, and one of the main reasons I'll never "compete" in a TDV again. I've really had enough of the blatant spam that happens in these threads, since pretty much all the conversation that goes on in here is the same, tired, repeated dribble that has been iterated in past TDVs.

We're no longer in the infancy of the TDV. This is no longer acceptable behavior, and I'm surprised it hasn't been nipped in the bud, since it can be so easily remedied.

The part that worries me is how few people seem to worry about it.

You yourself put it like this.

"I get what you mean but should it be such a worry? If so why not try to monitor the top people and see how much of an influence posting in this thread was to their numbers."

You may not have meant it that way, but it sounds like you are condoning the actions in the thread, because they aren't "harmful enough".

It's not about how severe the harm is, it's about there being harm at all. And the posts in this thread often take away more from the TDV than they help.

I might place high in the yellow jersey today by complete accident, and you want to know what would be a chief contributor to that? This singular post, which, while I hope serves some point, shouldn't exist in the first place, since I feel like we shouldn't even be having this discussion now.

EX Palen :

I really hope we do.

I get that people get excited about the TDV. I was once young, and excited too.

But there comes a time where you can't just handwave spam behind innocence and excitement.

I would honestly remove (all of) the posts from this thread and the Team TDV thread from consideration when it comes to scoring.

I don't keep track of this, but I'd be willing to wager there are times where the people who run those threads have won the day in the TDV simply because of the mega-results post (as someone who once ran a Team TDV, I can attest to my own numbers getting a significant boost, although it was never when I was actively competing).

I know David, for example, would never cheat or anything, but it's entirely possible for him to get more points than he would have otherwise, for a results post that can more or less write itself with very minimal extra work.

EDIT - Just to drive the point home, but even though it's early in the TDV day, I'm leading yellow and am second in red, entirely because of this singular post and logging on for the day. It won't hold up all day, but 400+ words goes a long way to scoring a point in the TDV (It's about 1/3 of what yesterday's fifth placer got)

Well, it is quite interesting that everyone that got a jersey for yesterday is a Global, something you don't really see everyday.

janus : Looks like you might just win this by your rate and possibly break the most points in a single TdV.

IgorBird122 : That would be good, at least once . Even though Jordan was on fire yesterday I still manage to accumulate many points. Although, as usual, that pesky Yuna1000 get through with her green points at the last minute.

legacyme3 : I am neither condoning nor condemning. Like any "good" scientist I propose we "study the matter and then act accordingly. IF there is place for worry then actions should be taken. I created a thread in the staff forum where people are proposing interest things already.

gamerforlifeforever2 : it is about time! I hate being a one-man team.

I enjoy how some people in here are complaining about how it's so easy to easily take care of this situation regarding the TdV, but then don't keep in mind the fact that we are walking a thin line with regards to wanting to ENCOURAGE activity in the forums and site wide really, to generate revenue for the site THUS KEEP IT RUNNING and banning people and closing every thread that turns to spam. They have to consider the possibility to reduce the spam and needless activity during these events would alienate some of the most active members during that time, which is something we obviously don't want to do. Also if we did what some are suggesting, we would close almost EVERY active thread in the forum.

I think the better solution would be to limit how many times we do the TdV to maybe once a year, or figure out a different way altogether to encourage site activity.

In the end, I just wish that people were as active during TdV time as they were during Non-TdV months. We would be way better off if we could average it out a little better.

As far as the event goes, I'm glad that I took away 3 jerseys. Had more time for activity than I thought I would. Although I have to admit, the Yellow, Blue, Red Combination over my Brown username could look a bit cooler.

Man, yesterday was just a terrible day. I wasn't going to try to compete at all because once I got back home it was already midnight here so I figured there wouldn't be enough time but I saw I had almost 10 posts and how low the competition was so i only had to make a handful of posts to get up there, but even so, 3 points is still pretty sad. I'm going to tyr to make up for it today with another super day if I can.

I'm amazed at which rate I'm placing this TdV. The downfall seems to be here already, I just hope it doesn't stay much longer.

legacyme3 : I've also run a Team TdV, and I must say I didn't place that much on that occasion as I'm doing in the current competition. It probably stems from the fact I'm not a big poster after all, and the fact I had to keep track of the teams scoring took away even more time from me to post.

Jordanv78 : While this thread must exist for the sake of the competition, it clearly is being abused by people to make extra posts, and that's what we need to take care of. We cannot let people post like they want, because that isn't a good reflection for new users. It's impossible to get rid of all the spam, or even try to contain it all on Crazy House, but we must try our hard to minimize its amount as much as we can.

While we probably would be taking away the most active users, that would also make room for new competitors, thus bringing in new users to the boards and getting the habit of posting. It's a somewhat risky bet, but as long as we don't ban users, simply DQing them for the month, we should do fine.

Jordanv78 :

"In the end, I just wish that people were as active during TdV time as they were during Non-TdV months. We would be way better off if we could average it out a little better."

The only way to do that is to provide incentive.

In non-TDV months, activity will be sporadic because there's no gain to it, outside of contributing to an actual discussion.

I like non-TDV months, because quantity goes down, but quality goes way up.

When the TDV hits, you get all the pointless posts, that give Vizzed the air of activity, while sucking all the soul out of it.

There are still good discussions and intelligent thought being tossed around, but it's drowned out by the sea of awfulness that only exists in TdV months.

In a TdV month, there's activity because there are faux-valuable items on the line, like jersey's and banners. These let your username stand out, and for some, there can be no greater honor, since it means you are more likely to be noticed for the next month or so.

Most TdV winners have gone on to become well known users of the site. Of the 15 different Rainbow winners in TdV history, only thudricdholee and thing1 aren't presently elite members of the site. And of those two, one is permabanned, and everyone knows who they are.

For many winners, exposure is as great a reward as anything. Many who placed well in the TdV their first time or two around have gone on to be staff (Lazlo Falconi, for example, White Banner winner in the first TdV, ended up becoming a local, and later a global). It's about making a name and legacy for yourself. And some choose to make it through the TdV.

In the end, the TdV is still kind of a sore spot for a lot of users, like myself, because while it provides a boost in activity, it also represents a boost in spam, and it hurts the intelligent discussion on the site.

I am not saying this thread should be closed, but I do believe David should code it so no posts in this thread count for points.

Give me one argument why posts in this thread should count for points? Outside of centralizing the spam, I can't really see a reason why it should. The discussion in this thread is often times banal, and disappointing. And all it does is serve to boost the numbers of people who are seriously competing in the event.

I get the problem isn't restricted to this thread, but why can't we start with this simple starting point?

I get the problem isn't restricted to this thread, but why can't we start with this simple starting point?

zanderlex : hey, at least you were able to obtain points. Posting so much in so little time is good in my book.

EX Palen : hence my suggestion to limit posting in this thread to no more than 10 percent of the user's total

legacyme3 : In my view, Crazy House is MUCH more of a problem when it comes to spamming. I admit using it regularly to "meet my quota," but in the end it serve absolutely no purpose. In comparison, this thread serves *somehow* a purpose and is closed at the end of each month. The post boosting from it is marginal compared to Crazy House

janus :

Crazy House is a separate problem that is always a bag of worms.

I think it should be disallowed from TdV points as well, since it serves little purpose.

But that doesn't change how I feel about this thread.

I don't feel this thread serves a true purpose, when ninety percent of the posts are "Damn I didn't get enough points" or "Congratulations on getting blue yesterday!"

Very rarely does the conversation in here strike me as one that is worth noting.

I don't see a problem with congratulations, but rather that those congratulations end up counting for TDV points.

I don't know why we can't just make it so posts in this thread don't count for the competition. I feel like this thread, and Crazy House, should not count, because I feel it promotes the wrong kind of activity for the site.

legacyme3 : I have no problem with doing that but I'll wait and see what the staff thinks. It shouldn't be too hard of an update to make it so that the TdV thread is ignored but I just have to make sure to manually update my script every TdV to include the ID number of each TdV thread that gets made.

That's all I ask.

I don't want to shut down the "fun" or any of that. There is some friendly banter that happens in this thread, and while I personally think it serves little purpose, it is part of what makes the event fun for people.

I'm just of the opinion that what is said in this thread should be ignored with regards to scoring, and that the scores should reflect posts of meaning*.

I think it goes a longer way towards legitimizing the competition, and giving everyone a more level playing field (since I know there are those who have issue with posting in this thread for the sake of getting their numbers up).

(* by posts of meaning, I mean none of the competition threads themselves, nor the Crazy House forum)

legacyme3 : Its strange how you take one sentence from that post and turn it into an argument in your favor. Look, I've been around long enough to understand what the TdV is, and how people react to it. ESPECIALLY over the past couple years.

My original point was that I agree that the posts in here should be limited, or not counted at all. But that this thread is FAR FROM WHAT THE MAIN PROBLEM WITH THE TdV is.

I also disagree that the quality of posts increases a lot these days post TdV. You now why? Because users hold off posting their best reviews and stuff (often times) for the TdV months. Several users have admitted to this. The activity goes down a ton. Sure there aren't a bunch of spammy posts all over the place like TdV months...but the issue is that outside of the mods, not that many people are posting. Myself and Geeo basically carry the forum activity through the non-TdV months.

I'm not sure why there has to be incentive outside of enjoying the site to post, but I also acknowledged that there is other and probably better ways to encourage activity than the current TDV, which I ALSO stated in another post in this thread. As I said before, I would be happy if we didn't do the TdV AT ALL or just limited to once a year.

"Because users hold off posting their best reviews and stuff (often times) for the TdV months. Several users have admitted to this"

This could be used more as an argument for quantity than quality.

we're letting the users themselves decide what their most quality reviews are, now? Most of the reviews I read that are of good quality tend to be post-TDV, rather than during the TDV itself. The ones we get now, certainly have more WORDS than the ones post-TDV, but I don't want that mistaken for those reviews having better quality.

There are exceptions to this, however, but it's just that, an exception more than the rule.

The vast majority of people who put out "their best reviews" during the TDV are often times shoveling it to the boards, carelessly.

What I can agree with is your last line.

I would also be happy if we didn't do the TDV at all, or limited it to just once a year. But I also admit I say this from a standpoint of personal bias, being of the quality over quantity standpoint. From the standpoint of a board owner, you want whatever activity you can get, so four TDVs a year makes sense. So I don't have a real problem with it existing. Just the small things that we can fix. Not the large things we can't.
