janus : I hate to shoot your idea down but there is no such thing as love at first sight.  You can't really love someone until you have to share a bathroom with them, or you see how they treat the waiters and waitresses in a restaurant, or what they're like when they're tired and they have to be patient for something.

Love comes over time, it's something that can be developed but can't be instantaneous.  Can people really like each other to start and stay together and get married?  Sure, it can happen.  But "Love at First Sight" just means you want to bang the other person as quickly as possible.

Personally I agree 100% with what was said. Expectations are at the core of what causes friction between people. Many times people will get upset over expectations they don't even acknowledge are there. I know I've been guilty of this on quite a few occasions.

"Expectations lead to disappointments"

This kind of goes hand-in-hand with assumptions (there's a saying for assuming but I won't say it here, haha). I like to assume that when people say they're going to do something, they'll do it (which while it is a reasonable expectation, it's still an expectation), or that people 'should just know'.

I try to take a daily inventory and assess what my expectations are of a person or situation. If I know I'm likely to be disappointed, I"m less likely to be angry about it.

There is truth to your statement. Everyone's life experience differs, and therefore we usually expect different things.

However there is a way to overcome these differences through communication, which to me is THE determinant on whether a relationship works or not. I daresay that 95 percent of my disagreements with my husband are due to communication problems. For example, I hate it when something unexpected happens (we go shopping for X, but also end up shopping for Y and Z, and sometimes even A); therefore I always ask whether X is the only thing we go look for. If he tells me right away that we will be shopping for something more, I usually have no problem since it becomes expected.
