One of the biggest challenges in Illusions - and an intentional one - is figuring out what your controls do and what the point of the game is. Indeed, the game came not with a manual but a sealed pamphlet called The Key. Beneath are its secrets:

Odd-numbered stages take place in the Mirror Dimension. This realm is not itself mirrored, but it does have a mirror in it. The goal is to make the Gleebs - the strange creatures that all move at the same speed, in the same direction and on the same path - touch one another, causing them to fuse together. All must become one - the resulting golden Gleeb must then reach the mirror, whereupon it will pass through to the Cubic Maze.

Your means of doing this is your limited method of control. Pressing up and down causes the gleebs to move either forward or backward upon their path. Pressing one of the two buttons causes all Gleebs to jump up at the next opportunity; pressing the other causes them to jump down at the next opportunity. They will only jump upon reaching Jump Points, which are not marked. If two Gleebs are close to each other but not combining, make one of them jump and change direction during the jump, giving you a lot of control of their positions relative to each another. Making good use of this strategy makes these stages a LOT easier.

An important note about commands - in both types of level, there doesn't seem to be an expiration time for delayed (jump or split) commands. Once a Gleeb receives a delayed command, it will ignore the other kind of delayed command until it can perform its current one. So if it's ignoring your command, give it the chance to do the other kind.

In later levels (or immediately if you pick Skill Level 2 or higher), lizards will appear and make life difficult for you by biting the Gleebs, causing more Gleebs to appear (extra Gleebs will also appear over time), and they can roll to go faster. However, they can only bite Gleebs on stairs. When beakers of water appear, tipping them over before they disappear will cause a water spill that can turn lizards into fish that then turn into birds (hey, this a game IS based on M.C. Escher's works, after all).

Even-numbered stages take place in the Cubic Maze. THESE stages are mirrored, and so is the goal; you must split your golden Gleeb into red Gleebs and send them back through the mirror. Pressing any direction will make all Gleebs change direction. There's no jumping here - instead, your buttons split the Gleebs at certain points. One button makes Gleebs split when they reach lower corners of the cube, and the other makes them split at upper corners. When this happens, one Gleeb moves vertically while the other moves along the predetermined path (this can result in a reverse of direction). Gleebs can only be removed when they are all red and thus unsplittable - during this time, they will pass through the mirror instead of going past it. Lizards occur during these stages too, but not beakers; they can only bite on corners and will metamorphose on their own.

This really looks like a unique game. I don't think I've played this game myself. I'll have to set aside some time to check it out.

I look forward to seeing more quickstart guides from you in the future!
