Hello, my name is Kingly, and this is my review of Pokémon Sweet Version!

Pokémon Sweet Version is a hack of the game "Pokémon: Fire Red", but this hack is very much it's own game and succeeds in creating an all new Pokémon experience. I have always been a huge fan of Pokémon, and I am always on the lookout for a delicious new hack to play. I have looked into many, but I find it hard to locate hacks that are both creative and unique. Pokémon Sweet Version met my expectations in full, and I would highly encourage other people to give it a go. It isn't a complete game, and it could use a few bug fixes and a few more things to do after the initial ending to the game.

Below is my experience with the various aspects of Pokémon Sweet Version, but before you read on please be aware of the following:

- This is my first review, so if I do something wrong or something could be improved, please let me know.

- I rate from my perspective, and my perspective is coming from far too much time spent playing Pokémon. Someone who plays less may find this version more difficult.

- I'm a little biased. Hacks are very difficult to make, and I may give an extra point here and there just for sheer ability to create something like this.

Graphics - 9

Typically, Pokémon hacks tend to have quite a few issues here and there, but I didn't find any problems with the graphics of Sweet Version. In fact, considering the level of detail and how much was changed from the original game, the graphics are downright fantastic. Everything about each map and town was at least a different color, if not done in entirely new schemes and textures. This drastic change helps to remove the mindset of "I'm playing a hack!" to "I'm playing a whole new game!" This made my experience so much more enjoyable because everything felt so new and refreshing. A few details I highly appreciated were the ice cream trees, the dynamic pink caves, and the uniquely colored water (the ocean is made of milk, that's a big win in my book). Overall, the graphics on the maps were all incredible, and I cannot even begin imagine all the time that went into this part of the game.

Obviously, this is a Pokémon hack, so a major part of the graphics is the Pokémon themselves. This is where I had to take away a point. While the majority of the newly created "PokéTreats" were done very well, it was clear that some did not have as much thought put into them. Some of the sprites were a little boring, and certain colors were used next to each other that made sprites look clashy or even glitched. I would have liked to see as much time and thought go into each and every sprite, instead of just most of them. That said, the PokéTreats that were done very well were incredible. It's easy for a theme like this to really go overboard with the graphics, but there was a nice balance of cute little edible Pokémon, and cool looking treats that you would most certainly not want to eat.

There was also a few edits to the human character sprites. I understand that we don't see these sprites for a long period of time, but I appreciate that a little effort was thrown their way. I particular enjoyed the lady wearing what appeared to be a dress made of cake.

Sound - 7

The sound of Sweet Version is fairly average for a Pokémon game. It isn't dynamic, and there isn't any extravagant music numbers that will have you looking for a download. But, it's still fairly enjoyable and works well with the theme. While the music is simple and basic, it keeps a very consistent uplifting tone to it throughout the game. I feel as though this hack was a really good theme and opportunity to create very unique sound effects. Perhaps a munching sound, or even some unique food sounds for attacks would have really added to the experience. A lot of the sound effects were kept the same, being why I took so many points off. That said, I sill managed to keep the sound on, despite my dislike of most Pokémon game music.

If you play with your sound off, I would suggest turning it on every so often to explore the songs for each town. I found that I really loved the sound that is played in Candy Village.

Addictiveness - 10

I gave Sweet Version a solid 10 because of it's unique theme and a creative execution of said theme. I've played a lot of hacks, and what I find with most of them is that they're too afraid to really go all out, and the result is that they're "same old, same old" after one playthrough. Sweet Version keeps the original idea of Pokémon (catch creatures, battle, defeat gyms), but isn't afraid to go there and create something new. For one thing, people aren't just catching creatures, they're making them! This game literally is creating life left and right and you're supposed to take it as the "norm". It's such a ridiculous notion when you think about it.

From the 2 new friends you get to have from the start, the unique sprites, the all new types to learn, the new plot, the dorky new bad guys, and the incredible boss characters that you meet prior to fighting them... this game was straight addiction for me. I just had to keep playing. I wanted to know what the next town would look like, what other PokéTreats I would see, and what was going to happen with Chocobun and Dark Chocobun!

I would absolutely play this again, and I would highly encourage others to play it at least once. It's definitely worth it.

Story - 9
To avoid spoilers, I'm just going to talk about my reaction to various parts of the story. I'm avoiding specific details even though I really want to rave about some of the really fun parts, as I feel each person should get to experience this fun story for themselves.

The story itself was very creative, and I appreciated the comical approach to some of the characters. In particular, all "bad guys" were quite derpy. Not to say that the bad guys weren't challenging, they just talked and acted in a way that felt very silly. It was so reminiscent of the TV show and I loved it. One scene I found quite funny was with your "rival", right at the end of the game. He's kind of a dork, and he so knows it too.
Your "friends" are nice, but they seem to have a "thing" between them that you are so not a part of. That said, it was nice to just have actual friends in a Pokémon game. They pop in and out of the story at appropriate times.

Other characters add to the story in little ways, either giving hints and background, or just creative commentary. This game really has a way of poking fun at the original games. One gym leader even questions the idea of being able to use an HM outside of battle after defeating them, and there are a few other hidden gems that are enjoyable for someone who has played Pokémon games before.

The following is more so a warning than anything else, but is also why I took a point off when I really wanted to give a solid 10... I sort of... got lost? There's not always a clear direction, and in one particular part of the game you need to do something very specific to move on. I ended up defeating the 7th gym prior to the 6th gym. And then I wandered around for about half an hour before I stumbled upon the answer completely on accident. It was sort of annoying, and took away from an otherwise perfect experience. It didn't drastically effect my game, but doing things out of order always feels weird. I'm glad I know for future playthroughs, and I hope no one else gets confused like I did.

Depth - 8

Most hacks don't get anywhere near this deep, and most would never even try. The amount of time that went into this is clear within the first few minutes. And the fact it isn't even finished? I fear for how good Sweet Version could become if the maker decides to put more work into it. There is plenty for you to do in this game, and a few "outside the story" areas that are great for exploring. The story itself takes a while to complete, and like with most Pokémon games, you need to spend a lot of time preparing and considering how you will handle the next battle. There are many different ways to do things. You can take the simple approach and bulldoze your way through with an excellent team, or you can take a break here and there to catch and train new Pokémon. I personally enjoyed working on my Cookbook the most (which can be completed). That alone brought me quite a few extra hours of game play after defeating the game.

The reason I took a couple points off is because if you know what you're doing, doing only what you need to reach the end game really isn't going to take that long. It just doesn't have enough content to keep people going and going and going. I would hope that if this was ever finished, there would be more to do either in the story itself, or after the end game.

Difficulty - 7

Well, the good news is that it wasn't too difficult or too easy. The bad news is that the difficulty is not consistent, and is sometimes far too easy, and sometimes a little bit challenging (as in like time consuming and boring tasks).

Depending on your starter, you're either going to have an easy breezy time with the beginning, or it's going to take you a bit and you're going to be desperate for a Sweet Ball because your starter is somewhat useless. I ended up depending on the first PokéTreat I caught for a good bit before I went back to my starter. After the Vanilla Dome, the game becomes very easy again, as you can seriously over-train and just farm Rare Candy. Then the game becomes fairly moderate, and then suddenly very challenging again. And then easy at the Ginger Dome... And then it gets hard, and you run back to the Ginger Dome because you clearly need to spend half your life there to prepare yourself for what's ahead. Basically, it really went back and forth. Every time I assumed I was good for the next area, I had either over-trained by A LOT, or the next area had really jumped in difficult and I wasn't ready. It wasn't as though it was challenging, just that it was confusing. It needs to be more consistent and balanced.

I should mention that I also did the extra battles, finished my Cookbook, and caught all of the legendary PokéTreats. These tasks were startling easier than they should have been. Maybe that was my experience playing in, but I expect these things to be next to impossible.

A FEW MORE THINGS

- There's a few bugs. In one spot an area appears free for you to walk through, but when you get closer the blocking old man appears. And one gym sign will freeze your game (refer to my screenies). Also, there's some weird area where there's an invisible block in the middle of the road. Sometimes text may escape the text box. These are all things that are likely due to it being in beta.

- Mewberry won't do what I tell it, despite the fact that I have 8 badges and Twoberry listens to me just fine.

- One attack move shares the same name as another. This becomes confusing.

- There's a lot of double battles. I enjoyed this because you can train two PokéTreats at once, but some people may find these confusing and annoying.

You know, you can either warn people at the very beginning that you will spoil or use spoiler tags as I did a few times.

Anyway this is your FIRST review?! Damn you are (almost?) a better reviewer than I am! You structure is very clear, you give ample details AND lots of comparison with other Pokémon games. I hope you write many more reviewer in the future!
