Are you afraid of rocks? Do you fear that one day a massive tock will just crush your house? Well, that actually is something that you should fear. The rock in question is actually a thousand door long asteroid that is supposed to pass by the earth on Halloween at nearly 100,000 miles per hour.

How close is the asteroid going to be? Well imagine going to the moon, and then coming half way back, that distance is how far away it will be when it passes by, very close to the moon, very big, and very fast.

Do you think something like this could be scary? I am actually a bit scared by the thought of what could go wrong. Just imagine if the calculations of where the asteroid travels were off by just 1 degree and I'd the orbit of the moon was just right, the asteroid could realistically take out the moon.

Your thoughts?

I highly doubt that the moon is going to be taken out by that asteroid. It's going to miss us and the moon and fly away to who knows where. That asteroid won't effect us at all.

I agree with gamerforlife. I don't see it hitting the moon and it will probably fly by us and go somewhere else. Heck I'll probably forget it as its Halloween I have horror films to watch and pranks to do on people.

I think worrying about it is pointless, unless we somehow ascertain it to be making impact in 10 days, and then suddenly have to rush to avoid it; but, if there's nothing we have on hand right now that could stop it, then it's going to hit, whether we worry or not.

And yeah, I know that sounds kind of (no, really) cold, especially coming from someone as usually emotional as myself, but that's my objective thought about it. The best we could possibly do at this point is be prepared to help in the worst-case scenario. Nothing more.

gamerforlifeforever2 :

Well its not like knocking out the moon would do anything drastic aside for a few gravity changes with the water, and that's worst case scenario. Its just the thought that since its going to be so close, the slightest miscalculation could be drastic.

If I had a telescope, I would so want to watch it pass by.

Like I said, though. Even if such a miscalculation has occurred, what can even be done? We can only be prepared for the worst at this point. There's nothing more to it.

CAN YOU SMELL WHAT THE ROCK IS COOKING? No but really, I hadn't heard of this rock/meteorid heading this way, and I really don't think it's TOO big of a situation to worry about. Mind you, if it DID hit the moon, it'd do a lot adversely than just change water levels and gravity of Earth. Would it not change the rotation of our planet due to lack of rotational mass of our little blue ball? I may be mistaken though. That and debris of a moon would hit us and be like tons of little meteors hitting us all over if they were big enough not to burn out in our atmosphere. This being said, IF IT IS miscalculated, yes, very scary. If not, business as usual.

SWTTerra: That's what makes it so scary, just imagine it dis miscalculate and actually went on to hit the earth. Its only 1000 feet, so like 3 blocks, but because nothing like this has ever happened before that we have recorded, then you can't really prepare for the worst because you don't know what it could be.

Of course the odds are like 1 trillion in 1, but just the thought that you could have been so close to being wiped out is scary.

Kind of like what happens when someone's in the steer and almost gets hit by a car. It didn't happen, and it missed them, but they get scarred because it was a possibility.

manicman66 : Read above post, but in response to your statement about size. The damage wouldn't fully be bases on size, but on speed. Irs a rock, that's flying at 78 THOUSAND miles per hour. Something that fast, no matter how big, theoretically would go right through the earth or knock it out of its orbit. Theoretically of course since it wont happen.

If it hit the moon, there's also the possibility of debris falling and hitting stuff here.

Of course it is scary. This kind of catastrophe is (almost) unavoidable and is likely what caused the demise of the dinosaurs. If it takes on the moon, we will just have to adapt to a life without tides - hopefully it will be on high tide.

However, in order to cause substantial damage that rock would need to be substantially large (I would wager more than a meter in diameter). Because it is rock a good part of it will disintegrate when it enters the atmosphere due to friction (unless it is made of metal), and maybe pollution too as we saw in The Simpsons .

zanderlex : 1 meter = a little over a yard (which equal 0.9144 meter). So yeah, that thing IS huge (over 300 meters by 200 meters) and could cause a mess if it hits anything.

Well, not like it's the first asteroid that will pass by the Earth, and not even close to be the largest one.

It won't do any harm. It won't crash into the Moon, believe me, it's a long distance away from it. The only thing is that it will happen in Halloween, and well, the conspiracy trend that has invaded humanity lately coupled with how fast news spread nowadays lets a ton of paranoid theories to flood the net.

The calculations haven't been made only once, this has been recalculated a ton of times by different teams of scientists, so if even then they missed, we really should be discussing whether we are an intelligent life form or not.

zanderlex : If a large asteroid hit the moon and destroyed it likely all land life on the Earth would be destroyed by secondary meteor impacts. We're safe though. They can hit Pluto 5 billion miles away, they can predict the path of this rock. Plus, NASA has a plan now. Ever see Armageddon? lol

Yeah Pointless.
