Pre-Review
First off, let me start by saying that Pokémon Emerald was a large part of my childhood. I had over 400 hours played on it when I was younger, and it is easily one of my favorite Gameboy Advance games. With that being said, I must say that I will put any bias aside for the integrity of this review. If you are interested in a video version of this review, please check the Vizzed video section for Pokémon Emerald.

Where did he come from, where did he go?
Alright, so let's start off with the story line. After you finish moving from... wherever you moved from: you begin your journey to become a Pokémon Champion. You officially start off the journey once you receive your first starter Pokémon. Throughout your journey you'll meet your two main antagonists, Team Aqua and Team Magma. Both teams have a very specific view on what they think the world needs, and it just so happens that those views are basically opposites of one another. So 10 year old you must save Hoenn from the destruction that their feud may bring. When you're not dealing with that, you'll also need to get all 8 badges, so you can challenge the Elite 4 for a chance to become champion.

It's addictive and provides depth!
This brings us to the game play. If you've ever played any Pokémon game before, you should be very familiar with how this works. After getting your starting Pokémon, it's your job to catch, train & evolve your team. This game features a fighting system that will reward specific types of damage against other specific types of Pokémon. For instance, a water attack will do a nice amount of extra damage towards a rock type Pokémon. On top of the type-based combat, there is also different types of attacks and defenses.  As an example, a move like tackle is physical and really wouldn't do much against a strong defense-based Pokémon. Yet against that same Pokémon, a move like water-gun is
a special attack, and would do considerably more damage. On to the note of battles themselves, Pokémon Emerald introduces the PokéNav. This allows you to rematch certain trainers, making for good training and overall extending replay value.

Very easy with practice.
In terms of difficulty, this game can become very easy once you learn the ropes of everything. You may only lose a few battles during your adventure, assuming you trained your Pokémon by not running from every wild encounter. Money management in-game isn't too difficult and you should be living comfortably so-long as you battle a lot of trainers throughout the game. The only real time you may run into trouble is near the end of the game.

It can't look much better than this.
So let's talk about graphics. Given the Gameboy Advances technical limitations, Pokémon Emerald really did well on it's graphics. Small yet noticeable things like animated Pokémon during battle, the many different battle effects, and the nicely themed game world in general all add to the appeal. You really can't complain much about anything graphic related.

I hear you, man.
The soundtrack in-game is also pretty good. There doesn't seem to be really any differences from Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire - but in fairness the sounds were already great anyways. What makes the sound great is that, once again, the small things like each individual Pokémon having a unique cry, or the randomly intense battle music.

Conclusion
Okay, so let's wrap up the review. Pokémon Emerald really shines in its replay ability, interesting story, in-depth battle system. Although it's considerably easy, it still offers a challenge to those who actively seek it. Fans have even created special challenge rules that you can find in the forums to make the game more difficult. The sprite detail and good audio make the adventure feel really fun. And it's for all these reasons that I rate Pokémon Emerald a healthy 9 out of 10 overall. If you've played Emerald version for 100's of hours, or you're just looking to play a classic video game - you will still be able to have a ton of fun on this game.

This review was great! You developped your own, original structure (and it is very clear), you give ample comparisons with other Pokémon games and made the review easy to follow for people knowing little about the game like me. I hope THIS is the featured review!

janus :

Thank you very much for the compliment! This was my first review so I'm still sharpening the reviews to find a sweet spot (Not too long, not too short, avoid going off track, hit the main details, etc). Getting praise from a veteran writers definitely gives me confidence moving forward!

Thanks again.
