When I go see a movie and Jake Gyllenhaal is in it, there's always one thing that I can count on, and that's that the movie is going to be great. Two of my five favorite movies of all time star Jake and that doesn't even include others that were still really good. Every single movie that I have ever seen by him was a masterpiece and that includes Southpaw, which was amazing. At first, I didn't really want to see I because even though it looked like a great drama movie, I didn't like the fact that it was centered around sports, but I ended up going with one of my friends to see it and it turned out great.
The movie is about this awesome boxer played by Jake named Billy, but everything goes downhill when another boxer starts a fight with him at a party and during the fight his wife gets shot and dies. He needs money so takes up a threw fight contract where he losses the first fight of his career. He ended up headbutting a ref for calling the match over even though he wants to keep fighting and because of that, everything goes downhill. As a result he quits his job after getting a suspension and crashes his car into his house. Because of this as well as being on drugs and having a gun near his kid, his kid gets taken away from him. That's all where the real story behind because this is the point where Billy tries to turn his life around and get his daughter back. The story culminates into one final fight against the boxer who was the one who started the fight at the party, who also happens to be training with the coach who Billy left. The acting itself was just amazing, from Jake all the way down to the kid who played Billy's daughter. Jake's performances are always amazing, especially when you have dramatic movies such as this one. You had him play an amazing detective in Prisoners which was actually my favorite movie of 2013 and he played an insane psychopathic photographer in Nightcrawler last year. You just can't have a movie starring Jake that doesn't have a good story, it always either makes you cry, or feels very suspenseful, I just overall has a great story, because he's just such a great actor who never puts on a bad show. The rest of the cast was great as well, you had Rachael McAdams play as his wife, though I only know her from Sherlock Holmes, where she was great, and you have Curtis Jackson and Forrest Whitaker as the two trainers and they had great roles as well. When you think of the emotional aspects of the movie, those two were complete opposites, theres Jackson who played Billy's old trainer who only wanted the money and didn't care about the boxers while you had Whitaker who played Billy's new trainer who trained him because of what Billy was fighting for. All the other actors had great roles, and the things that they said only made the movie more powerful which was great. The music was great, especially one song by Eminem, while there's some sort of a training montage and all the other songs were really cool too but that one stood out the most to me, even though I don't really like that genre of music all too much. This movie basically took boxing, which already has a lot of drama, and they had made it look even better which is why I liked it so much, and overall the movie was so much fun to watch, whether it was a scene in the ring, in family services, or just in Billy's own apartment. The movie will really leave you stunned, and if a movie can do that, then it has to be really good. I wouldn't say this was one of my favorite movies of the year since there were many other big ones, but personally I would defiently say that this possibly the most thrilling movie of the year, probably the most sad, and in terms of the writing, could easily be the most captivating story if any movie that I have seen in 2015. If you put a story that has this much power into a big action movie or some other blockbuster, you could have a superpower movie, that's how good this was in terms of story and if you like a good story, then you really need to see this movie.
