Which one do you prefer: the Nintendo 3DS or 2DS? Why do you like it better? I'm pretty sure most people will choose the 3DS, but I'm curious as to why people would like the 2DS better. I'm not saying it's a bad thing to like the 2DS better.

I like the 3DS better because I like playing video games in 3D, and I like the 3DS's design better. Also because the 3DS is easier to angle the way I want it to be, and it's easier to take with me wherever I go.

Personally, the 3D effect is hit or miss depending on the game you are talking about. Games like "A Link Between Worlds and Luigis Mansion used it well, other games it's just a minor novelty.

I haven't owned a 2DS but I feel that the new 3DSxl is a sound investment. Especially with the improvements they made on both screens as well as the inclusion of a 2nd analog stick. Overall the features are just better for only a slightly higher initial investment.

Jordanv78 : Oh wow, that's cool! I was wondering about what the new 3DS's would be like. A 2nd analog stick is really convenient for people that prefer to use an analog stick with their right hand instead of their left.

Yeah, most games I have played on the 3DS haven't been that exciting with the 3D because it doesn't make much of a difference in how cool it is.

PacmanandMariofan : A lot of games need to analogs to play properly. Especially the type of games that involved freely looking around in a First person type environment (or other game mechanics) this fact I believe was overlooked in the initial development of the 3DS, so it was a MUCH needed improvement I felt.

Also, the new 3DSxl loads much faster than my old one did. So that is a nice feature as well.

I'm actually torn on this right now myself, and I'm leaning toward the 2DS in design because I think it looks better and I just like the overall appearance and button placement better.

Also I hate the idea of stereoscopic 3D. I outgrew the idea after trying it a few times with various movies etc. as a kid. It doesn't look right to me and actually ruins the immersion in my personal experience as everything looks halfway transparent. Now I've never used a 3DS, so if the transparency issue isn't there, please let me know as I'm still trying bro decide which to buy.

And the additional cost is equal to two or three games, and I just plan on playing Harvest Moon on it (the rest of the library really doesn't appeal to me), and I fail to see how stereoscopic 3D could improve virtual farming. lol so to me, I don't see any benefit in the 3DS over the 2DS. The 3DS' only pro for me is the screen protection that the clamshell design offers.

Eirinn : Things looking halfway transparent isn't an issue on the 3DS. However, it's difficult to enjoy the 3D when you turn it far up because you have to hold the 3DS a certain way for it to look good. It's always been a pain for me to do that.

If you buy a 3DS, I suggest you keep the 3D on it at halfway up at the most. My 3DS experience is the best that way.

I think it would be best for you to not take any chances and buy the 2DS in case you still don't like the way the 3DS's 3D looks.

Pac - Yeah, that's what I'm thinking too. And by halfway transparent, I mean do things look like they come up off of the screen, or does it look more like you're looking into a box filled with these characters/buildings/whatever is on screen? Basically does it add depth by making things look like they're coming up, or by making it more like certain background things are receding (kind of like making the screen feel more like a window)?

I hope that makes sense.

3DS, 3DS.

You see, I somewhat think the 2DS is pointless, I think, why not just turn off the 3D. and i'm pretty sure there is parental control on the 3DS, so yeah.. somewhat pointless.
Plus the 3DS has a much nicer design, the 2DS hurts my fingers (I don't own a 2DS, but a friend of mine does)

PacmanandMariofan : 3DS! You cannot close the 2DS, but you can close the 3DS, and you can simply turn off the 3D. The 2DS is just a waste of money (sorry for being rude).

imamonster : I totally agree.

I actually like my 2DS. I've played the 3DS and it's fine, but for me, paying $60 dollars less for the ability to play the same games? I can buy one or two more games with the money I saved. I'm not a fan of the 3D aspect, having to hold it a certain way, and if you don't, instant headaches (I'm aware you can change the 3D strength, it just still hurts my eyes). The only thing I like better with the 3DS is the ability to close it, but the 2DS still has a sleep mode, you just slide that button, same effect.

So, if you have the extra money, go grab a 3DS, but if you just want to play games (like me), save yourself some money and buy some more games.

I do find it strange that some people are saying it's a waste of money. The point of the hand helds is to play games, I can do that without paying for 3D. Also, I'm spending less money, to still be able to play the same games as everyone else... So, I'm actually saving money... Kind of the opposite of wasting money. I'm kind of old fashioned, so I don't need all these bells and whistles (old people terminology) to enjoy a game. I'm old.

Eirinn : It makes sense to me, so I'll try my best to answer.

Sadly, not a lot of things usually look like they're coming off the screen. Most games don't use the 3D to make things look like they're coming off the screen often.  Some games like Super Smash Bros. did a better job with it. For example, a Nintendog can interrupt your fight, and with the 3D on it looks like it's off the screen. Also, the logo looks like it's off the screen.

However, it doesn't look like certain background things are receding. The lowest 3D setting on it simply makes the graphics look sharper, it doesn't really have a 3D effect on most things.

imamonster : The 2DS is cheaper than the 3DS, so people that don't want the 3D, and/or want to save money, can just buy the 2DS and buy more games with it.

greenluigi : See what I said to imamonster. It isn't a waste of money for people with specific preferences for it, like its different design from the 3DS.

F. Starr : You made some great points in your post! Now I see more advantages for the 2DS being available

Really, I like the 3ds more. The 2DS just looks very 'basic'. It's a pad. It can't be shut. Other than that, it only displays 2D.
I think my vote goes to the 3ds.

I like the 3ds better. I have the 2ds and it isn't as small as I could be, it feels strange, and the speakers aren't as great.

If there's a 3DS XL in the choices, I'd say it's the sure winner for me lol (considering I already own one), but anyway, travelling with a 2DS is a pain, I usually just carry around a small body bag or a shoulder bag so there's no way I'd be able to carry a 2DS with me comfortably. However, I also play 3ds games even when I'm just at home so 2DS is still a viable substitute. I like the 3D function as well and I'd be sad owning a unit version that doesn't have it as a feature.

If I have a kid with me that doesn't know how to properly handle electronics nor have developed enough eyes not to get strained by the 3D effect, then maybe I will consider getting a 2DS more. It was designed for children after all and it looking basic, sturdy, cheap and simple is the main selling point for the parents looking for a kiddie system for their kids. But if you're gonna buy a system for yourself, and that you know you can take care of your unit (like swiping, cleaning, placing in proper places, not touching it with your greasy hands after eating etc) and you like or don't mind the 3D, then I'd suggest a 3DS. But really, if money and chance permit, choose a 3DS XL.

GamingN00B : Yeah, the 2DS has more of a kid-friendly design. Most older people like the 3DS's design more.

zanderlex : I feel like the 2DS should be smaller since the top screen can't be folded down like it can be on the 3DS. It feels more like a mini-tablet than a DS when it comes to its size, thanks to the way it's designed.

Juliet : I count the 3DS XL too. The one that I own is a 3DS XL

3ds... even though I haven't played 2ds or 3ds .. I watched my brother play 3ds and it looks so awesome so if I had to choose I would defiantly choose 3ds.

Eirinn : You can turn the 3D off on the 3DS and I'm pretty sure the screen on the new 3DS is of a higher resolution.

Honestly the improvements made on the New 3DSxl's 3D is so much improved that now it tracks your eyes so the 3D doesn't go out of focus like it did on the old models of 3DS. I was actually shocked at how much better it was when I upgraded.

PacmanandMariofan : If you made it smaler, that it would be impossible to see the games on the screens.

Jordanv78 : I had no idea the New 3DS XL made the 3D better! Hopefully the next time I go to GameStop, there will be a New 3DS XL there that the customers can test. I'd like to check out the other improvements and upgrades that the New 3DS XL has

zanderlex : Oh, good point.

PacmanandMariofan : Yeah it's really cool. They put a sensor on the front of the system that tracks your eyes/head and when it moves it also adjusts the 3D. I've rarely had a problem so far with the new console's 3D going out of focus. with my old 3DS Xl it went out of focus a lot if I was moving around or had the console too far away from my face.
