    *Keyboard typing echoing in background* ....Hehe...such an easy system to break! Could never imagine that such a big company like Vizzed.Co could allow such a niche hacker like myself into their system so easily, easier than taking candy from an implanted baby. *hearing knocks on door as breaks open* ...nngh...just great the big boys security has come to stop me. Who knew some tiny information about Citadel Station up above would cause such an outbreak of panic, anger, and distraught amongst the people of this organization? *looks up at Davideo and ignores him talking, overhears helping out* ...yeah yeah...like I care how you planned to take care of this space nugget and what not...hm? Wait!... you actually want a criminal (in your eyes) to help you with something aboard the ship, the very same ship that cause me to be chained up like this in the first place?! Fine...I'll help you out (hehe here's my chance to gain some implants that'll "help" with my work) just show me which PC screen you plan on placing me upon and I'll start clicking away.
    *Starts typing into systems main functions* There you all have it, your new system has been changed to how you desired. Now take me to my reward, or I'll just go and take all that progress I just made back. A smart hacker like myself always makes sure to leave a back door open, specially when it's against users like yourself. *Sonic57 lead to medical bay, in coma from surgery* (Thinks to self) These people are such idiots, you should never change an AI system like that and let "It" have all the control against your ship. It's not like I care though as if this comes to bite them in the behind...that'll be THEIR problem not mine! *fades to black* Welcome back, Viewers!  Hope you're all doing well here, and that you'll enjoy your time on our o-o-ou...MY time on the ship! Enjoy this dream d-dre-dream...Nightmare of an adventure aboard Citadel Station *mechanical and menacing laughter heard fading out*

                   !!0100-Not the greatest quality here or there, but a great atmosphere around-0110??

    *Screen flashes red static from attack* Being off in the early through mid 90's you really can't expect much from a gaming system back then (specially home console ones) so the gameplay is mostly what people's drive/focus was mostly spent on instead...well to the game developers at least. *See's images of Jaguar and Genesis commercials through V-Mail* So booting up your Dos of whatever PC you had back in those early bird times of the 90's, you'll obviously not be greeted to the most beautiful game of this decade; however, once you look past it pixel-shaded glory the dark atmosphere and feel you'll smell wreaking off this game's walls and microchips. To put it in perspective for you new recruits/rookies, if you take a look at "Doom" which was released a year prior it lives up faaar better in quality than what this game achieved...the characters didn't appear as blocky and the walls were more so textured compared to this game. If you really want to have a good idea of what this game looks like then take a look at "Wolfenstein 3D" released 2 years earlier; although System Shock does live up slightly better than that game.
    A few examples of what I mean by the atmosphere being sooo well done in my opinion is the fact that throughout many rooms and portions of this game you'll just see skeletons, open corpses, decapitated heads and a lot of others sights alongside just the natural environmental look and feel of this station. I haven't seen many other games do this next example either; but, referring to the decapitated heads from above if you actually drag them into your item screen it'll magnify the view for you...what's more is the fact that sometimes the heads will actually belong to those of the recently deceased. These people usually being known from Audio logs and sets you'll pick up along your search from each level to level...talk about not only creepy from having to hear their voices from the logs but then having to see and pick up their corpse afterwards too. This seems like enough for a brief explanation so how about we get into some defining level examples shall we? *enters in 451 keycode and walks through door*

                    [|||]Maintenance Level]===[

    *Enters room* Everything seems to be ok here...hm? *bulb explodes exposing darkness around* Strange...everything here feels all broken and beaten down? Doesn't really make much sense considering what kind of area it is. Although this is the 3rd floor in which the elevator will drop you off, it's actually the 4th place you'll be visiting and not really completing right away either. Now while this games atmosphere is dark on its own with the sight of death all around, the feeling of dread and loneliness from being the only real living person on board, and the crazy A.I trying to stop and destroy you at every turn...the game doesn't create the creepiest feeling. The only difference with this Maintenance deck is the fact that unlike the past 3 levels you've been to, where you were shooting and exploring any fear that came your way. This deck (and really is the only deck that does so) sets that fear in even more by sending you into a dark and dank space which also feels as though it's been abandoned for a long time and is just crumbling apart. Every step you take forward and around each corner, you just become and stay cloaked by the pitch black darkness all around...between all the light being shot out and the paneling amongst some walls and floors being ripped off, revealing the electrical wiring below and throughout the deck it creates a grizzly sense of horror. (which in my opinion this game is semi-lacking throughout some points) Mixed the chilling life-threatening tone of the music alongside the depressing and decrepit looks of this station, this place may definitely send a cold "shock" down your spine from the normal action and overwhelming enemies that may lay ahead. Time to move on! *slashes at Invisible G-Mutant*

                    ()---<><>Cyberspace<><>---!!!

    This is probably the thing that intrigued me the most about this game, as it was something they decided to leave out of its sequel. So naturally I wondered how this might be and how it may feel to play through that certain scenario. Cyberspace as you would expect from the name is a technical and highly sophisticated place that revolves inside technology one that can almost be endless at times. These "Cyberspaces" can vary depending on what kind of world the equipment is designed to make or in this games case, in any way that the A.I decides to make it into....which can be good for them and horrible for you to try and pass through. Whether it's in 2D or a 3D perspective field at times the area mainly looks like what you'd expect, with a colorful and innovative world that looks similar to a blueprint design of a building or object. (think of how the places in TRON look like if that doesn't paint a good picture on its own). While in this world you'll come across 2D enemies with a 3D look about them that would appear blocky and basic as to what you'd expect in a place such as this.
    Sure everything just seems to look bland at not so threatening here at all; although, you shouldn't take it so lightly as you'll run into certain obstacles. These obstacles being things such as an item orb/block which is covered in spinning blue lines and shall end up shooting diamond looking shapes at you which cause damage, or even just a semi square/platform looking block which is in actuality a mine that will also cause somewhat serious damage to your integrity. (health) Looking at this place it may seem like an easy feat; but, just like the tense music that ensues these parts of the game will have you sweating at your nanochips! Between the difficult control at times to the worry about being affected harshly at the loss of all your integrity inside, it certainly is an interesting place to look at and admire so let's continue forward *flies toward exit gate*

    While the graphics aren't the best for what you could see during this gaming period, it certainly keeps some interesting features and areas in hand. Whether it fills you with adrenaline or invokes you tightly with fear as if it's strangling you cybernetically, the atmosphere does a great job for what it tries to portray. Also the cutscenes in which you get to see do appear very nice for this decades standards as not many games had cutscenes periods or they were very blurry/poorly drawn, while these are fully animated and actually feature some really smooth and visually appealing looks for 94' so that just adds to the games already nice atmosphere. (though there are only 2 real cutscenes, with few scenes depicting explosions of someplace in your V-Mail system) All in all I'd say for not having the best looks; however, keeping it creative...I think it's fair to give the graphics a 7 out of 10! *Hops into elevator* Onto the next part of our story *Closes door as it moves to next segment*

               [/][]_An inventive and rockin soundtrack, that'll keep you peeled to your sensors on this adventure_XxX

    We've seen that the graphics don't exactly fair the best in a rating stand point, so how about we take a look at another big selling/critiqued point in a game...its soundtrack and sound effects. Let me tell you just because the duration of the adventure is done alone without anyone to help, the music sure gets you in the one man militia mood! Ready to fully take on anything that gets in your way! Yes the music choice they decided to pick for this game is pure greatness in some places, moderately fun in others, or just average in different areas so it's not perfect by any means. Another thing that's quite new to this genre that wasn't done before was the ability to have voice acting inside the game as well as listening to voices and information left by others on the ship fighting, before you were able to come check things out. Not only is this inventive; and yet, also new to this genre...but it also leaves a nice feeling of motivation and/or relief for having to constantly only find dead bodies and wandering alone throughout hordes of monsters. Enough space jibber jabber, time to go onto some examples to will interest your minds <3!

                __++Medical Level++__/

    So starting off this game right from the intro you watched (hopefully) you'll probably be interested in how the sound will start you off, since many games can start with a calm yet strong theme and others can be very relaxing while really pumping that adrenaline inside you. This game...basically takes that 2nd option of adrenaline and pumps a whole load of energy drink caffeine into your "system" and makes you feel just as crazy as the hacker you've taken control of during this journey! Again, to give you an idea of what this feels like take the first level theme of our earlier mentioned game "Doom" and just remember/imagine how that was and that's basically what you'll be starting off with. Only difference is that it adds a curve by starting out like a normal exploring/techno style theme; but, it then blasts off into a hard rock tone and gets that magical cyber-juice flowing inside ya and getting you pumped for the road ahead. (another good example could be Duke Nukem's theme from any of his games)
    To give you a brief overview of how it will feel when actually playing this level and hearing this, picture the following: "you've just awoken from your cybernetic surgery and are sent into the world of Citadel Station, monsters are swarming everywhere. As you explore around you'll hear a nice calm and mostly relaxing techno style beat; although, when the time comes and things get hairy fighting an assassin or mutant...while beating on their corpse the music will explode into that head bashing rock theme. Causing you to feel empowered and determined in your ability to defeat those around you! To be honest for games with this kind of setting or feel, (a mix of horror and action) this is what I always love to see and hear whenever I pop in a game and selected "New Game" or "Continue" and start off in that first refreshing area. Great theme in my opinion! Should definitely check it out if you're into DOS-ish/early PC styled themes. NEXT THEME!!! *throws beaker at mutant and runs for cover*

                   |1|Elevator Theme|6|

    *Continues throwing beakers and shoots laser at mutants* huhh...huhhh...well if you were interested in how pumping the previous theme was then you for sure are gonna love this theme! In order to give you the same imagery as with the last level I'll give you a short explanation of how it may feel/what could happen while you head toward this themes introduction. Imagine you're continuing the adventure above; however, things are starting to get a little too hectic and your life force is starting to diminish. You keep going back and forth bashing the skulls in of the enemies all around you, while trying to make it into this escape and reprieve from the madness behind you. Rushing for the entry door so you can finally relax and jam out to the rocking theme that'll be playing in the background, while inside this little dome of relief. And the song is....like a 50's intro theme or dramatic theme?? What I mean by that is picture any sitcom elevator theme or things they've used as comedic relief in horror movies; wherein, the character narrowly avoids death and is panting heavily...only to be accompanied by a nice piano/tuba kind of melody.
    This is exactly what happens when you walk into an elevator in the game xD! It doesn't fit at all to the horrific scenes you've had to watch and experience, or the crazy music that you've been listening to alongside the journey thus far. So...why would I add this on here? Cause even though it doesn't fit at all, I still enjoy it just for the fact that it DOES serve as comedic relief for points in the game which may feel frustratingly hard. Just the fact that you can be like: " ahhh there's Morgan's head right when I opened the door *steps back into elevator* dada.....daaaaa da dummdumm :3 ahhhh sweet reprieve <3" makes this theme really great, kind of like a movie you KNOW is realllly terrible...yet that's what makes it very enjoyable at the same time.  I mainly have a good memory of this theme because the first time I had heard it in a let's play I watched, I laughed my silly little quills off because of how humorous. How the people playing just killed a mutant infront of the door and then immediately to the calm music while you still are able to see the body in front of you, so I'd say this is still a great them to take a listen to when looking this game up!

    This brings us to the end of our journey in the sound department and from what we've seen, I feel it's perfectly safe to say that the creators did an excellent job on the music and sound effects for the game. The only issue I'd probably address that does take the score for this segment down a notch is that, due to the equipment back then in some parts of the game you'll hear a sharp piercing tone playing from some audio logs or whenever you enter a room with bio contamination around. It's an issue that does affect the sound poorly as it forces you to either lower the volume a lot or the sound off the game completely, (which would be destructive as you wouldn't hear enemies) so this problem lowers my score down to an 8 out of 10 for the sound segment of this game.

                  __||__An intriguing setting and style, hooking you to the games media disc__/__

    *Throws head at assassin and uses berserk patch* We've seen up above how interesting and different the graphical imagery and sound perspective this game offers us, the only question we're left with now...is the game worth your time and effort to set up and play? Honestly just like most of this game...it's a mixed bag on what you actually desire to play as a gamer for instance, if you can go back and play SNES or early N64 games with no problems and can have an enjoyable time then yeah you'll probably have a great time. For those of you whom can only really take on newer systems like PS3 or Xbox One then this game may not resonate so well with your cybernetic preferences, due to its age and the limitations placed on it back then. (causing bad game design in some parts for newer players) I'm personally fine with this style so I can have a really enjoyable time with this game for the scenery and music that accompanies it, alongside the addictive gameplay that follows as well as its deep and dark story that we'll talk about later on :3. The best way I can describe this game is take the crazy action style of the original "Duke Nukem" games, blend that together with the gore and grizzly tone of "Doom", and finally top it off with more levels of creativity and difficulty and out will pop this game! What I mean by that is we could just have the two simple gameplay styles like above and called it a day; and yet, the people of looking glass sat down and implemented more interesting tactics into the game to actually make the action/horror of the plot come alive to us all.
    If that's not clear enough just think about this idea for a minute...you're already having to deal with the normal station and all of its issues and vile creatures that lurk around; BUT, you also have to deal with the trouble that our creation SHODAN is causing around in CyberSpace?! It's like you're having to take care of 2 different worlds at the exact same time!! Not enough for ya you say? How about the fact that they added little hacking things for you to accomplish throughout this adventure, and yes actual hacking wherein you sit there for min trying to figure out what wire may go where. Just really grabs you in from the title screen sits you down and says: "hey...you messed up and you messed up bad! But, you're gonna fix it all and though it may be though you and you alone will finish this!" Just...the perfect kind of tone to fit with this kind of game setting, even more so when you really get into the meat of this dish from the game! Especially when you look back at the audio logs above and we can learn more about the story than what we're just being told by our helper or that evil A.I, making things even more interesting to connect as you progress throughout Citadel. Understanding tasks left behind, swapping between how to stop one thing or the progression of betrayal against other members of Tri-Op ...causing you to stay alert!

    Mixing great sounds and looks with a fantastic playability/active environment all around what more could you ask for? Clearly we can all say that this journey although not perfect, definitely grips you into the setting and makes the game just that much fun to go back to/turn on whenever you're in a mood to have a great time. Even though its age and its style of difficulty may be a turn off for more advanced players, I can definitely say it's a nice detour from what we're usually greeted with today and does offer a nice challenge that's definitely worth pushing through if you give it the time and effort. Due to earlier issues with sounds and how unforgiving it can be in comparison to later games or even games now, I'll have to give the addictiveness for this section an 7 out of 10! For implementing some very creative ideas and themes; however, creating some faults in design that'll turn some players away. *holds onto bars and enters cyberspace into next section*

                   XXxx``One hacker, one mistake, one horrid nightmare unleashed onto a station``xxXX

    The year is 2072 and everything seem peaceful and all was well in the outside world; but, could it be that up above....things were just curdling and trying to heat up to cause mass destruction above and below? Maybe...this was already in affect before any of us would've known down here on earth? Like many unfortunate souls, this issue was escalated do to and unnamed hacker entering into our beloved new system, "Tri-Optimum" trying to get some nice information against Citadel Station's background. Due to the high security amongst the station however, our hacker was apprehended by Tri-Ops security forces and was most assuringly going to be entering a death sentence at that kind of invasion against the company. Which is where that curdling finally starts to form into a solid piece of darkness and evil, when the head honcho/CEO of the company "Edward Diego" offers our little hacker a deal...one that would assure his safety and even gain him a little "extra" help with his hobby of sorts. With the attitude of a smirk and grin the hacker agrees to the offer and is sent forward to meet with "Shodan" the onboard A.I (Artificial Intelligence) turning what we'd know as a calm and collected piece of software that would make life on Citadel comforting and enjoyable, into a nightmare and insane artifact that would soon be the station's downfall. True to his words Edward shows our protagonist (possibly antagonist?) to the medical bay where he would be fitting with a military grade cybernetic interface for his troubles.
    Although, our main character helped Diego he didn't trust him one bit, that with the issues he had wanted the hacker to solve were asinine...but that if something turned awful for him...it would be Diego's problem and not his anymore! As he slept in 6 month coma following the agreement. *glass breaking and security bots go haywire in hallways* No...we gotta make sure everything is clear, we can't allow Shodan to create more death defying cyborgs from our crew members. We need to destroy this place and fast befor....AHHH!! *ripping of flesh is heard* ....... I prefer qu-quieeettt stations i-i-insects, y-you can't stop my transformation...m-mation...into beauty on C-C-Citadel Staaaaaation! *medical tank opens up* ....Guess it's finally over, I'll just find and escape pod and....huh? *kneels down MGS 1 style and picks up message* (Rebecca) "Hello new employee, we're having issues upon the board with the A.I known as Shodan. The corridor's are overflowing with mutants and contamination can be found in several places, you are Tri-Ops only hope now. By the way...we know all about Diego, you finish this mission and you'll be forgiven entirely...Rebecca out! *hacker stands and picks up lead pipe* Well, I said it would end horribly and looks like that bumbling idiot screwed everything up now. Was sick of his ideas anyway, time to make this A.I have a system failure! *bashes mutants head with pipe*

    If there is anything you have to give props to this game about, it's the unique and very impeccable storytelling that goes on throughout this adventure. While this story I feel is not as dark as its sequel, I do however feel that it did and excellent job mixing the action and horror genre together with this story since I feel not only does it fit better with the main characters personality... (hacking and what not) but I also feel it works best in the long run for consumers whom may not like action too much or vice versa. I definitely feel that the people at looking glass really must've been implanted with a great story telling rig, as this to me is one of the better/best stories you'll see in games from 94' and back. Compared to again "Wolfenstein" and such wherein it was just you've been sent here...making sure you kill this person or others whom get in the way with not much variety or complete pitfalls coming in the way of your plan. So for the story I shall give this game a 9 out of 10!

                             >>>Offering you a lot of fun and adventure, inside one little disc!>>>

    Sure the idea of playing an old 94' game may not seem as interesting to some viewers out here, cause like many games of that time (with a few exceptions) there wasn't really much to the entire game or it wouldn't last for more than a few hours to a day at most. So some of you out in the audience may be afraid about this the most in the entire review! Well let me just kindly say you won't have to worry about that "as much" with this game as believe it or not from the simplistic looks, it can take even a very skilled player of this game around 15 hours or so to complete it entirely and that's if you're a SKILLED player?! So yes while it may take less than a full day for a experienced gamer you can already guess by that feat that a normal/newbie player will take around an entire day or probably even longer depending on how well they can survive or figure out some puzzles. Funniest part about how long this can take is the fact that this whole area you'll be going back and forth between has 9 levels surrounding it, some of which can be split into several different sections (Alpha, Beta, Gamma, and Delta) and if you count the other split segment it'd be like 11 or 12! That's...actually quite large when you consider how much you're having to focus on and complete inside this game, and for the fact that each time you reach a new deck your objective can change completely off-base from the last floor's mission.
    For example it could be like: "makes sure you destroy the mining laser from this deck" but then it changes to "need to activate this button on Medical deck in order fire the laser, but level security is too high to access it". Another thing to note on each floor you have a set security level which starts off at 100% and with some doors you're not able to open them until the level goes down significantly or at least a little more, otherwise you'll be blocked by Shodan's security and will have to look for cameras hidden throughout the level or if they're on the deck you'll need to find computer nodes and blow them up to reduce the level. One last interesting thing for you viewers to all know is that during the duration of this game, you'll come across many difference pieces of equipment that you'll be able to use as a weapon or as defense for your character. With weapons that range from an energy charged Laser Rapier, to a simple flechette rifle, or even a basic lead pipe to bash your foes with! (with defenses such as an enviro-suit, used to help with contamination/radiation damage) Alongside this note, it's good to keep in reminder that you usually shall have 2 different kinds of ammunition for a non-energy weapon, bullets that work best on human like monsters and bullets that work best on cyborg-ish foes...with other ammo's ranging from damaging to tranquilizing or other options.

    I feel that these are the basics of what you need to know in terms of depth as we've already described the cyberspace area up above in addictiveness and graphics so would be a waste of space and time to mention it again. The rating I'd have to give for the depth of system shock would be an 8 out of 10 for creative features mentioned previously and just the overall length of this game! Almost towards our end now... *throws frag grenade into next room and dives in*

              !!....A level of difficulty tougher than this nightmare, which shall even make the mutants roar in fear....!!

    Confused by that title eh? Well let me clear up that confusion by basically saying that the intense difficulty you'll experience while playing through this game, (in my opinion) is even scarier/harder of a challenge than this nightmare that first popped onto the station. How can that be when this game looks just like the other shooter games of its time, I mean seriously you can just easily beat down on the enemies and some of them usually drop items to help out! Yes, while that may be true I wouldn't be so light on acting all trigger happy as that brings us to the first level of difficulty which is the "Respawn" rate that exists for certain enemies within different levels. To give you a perfect example *points down* that mutant you just went trigger happy against will actually respawn after their population falls below 10 of them remaining on the floor and 16 more shall return in its place, topping the amount you start off with. Seems logical to most people, all you'd have to do is kill them over and over until the respawn breaks/runs out....which while it will help you in some other floors or enemies. On the first level (where we are) those mutants will come back indefinitely; but, the other enemies here do have a limit cap so either leave them alone before they respawn or go past the cap...your choice. This same format works throughout each level of this space station, just with the spawn rate and cap swtiched around each time. The only problem is that some of these enemies can kill you verrry easily within a 3-5 attacks or so, don't take them so lightly when they come running or start attacking ya from afar!
    Still don't believe this game can really be that difficult? Alright how about we take a look at *gets shot in back and blacks out* nnngh!.... (restoration complete, life force replenished, biometer rate ok) dang....enemy got me from behind, I was trying to say that when what you just witnessed happens you'll be returned to/healed up at this station and be allowed to continue throughout the level again. HOWEVER, you MUST switch the stations restoration areas back to normal!! Otherwise, when you get shot and killed like that back there you'll just get a game over and be turned into a cyborg with a little cutscene. Don't get too comfortable even if you do activate it for this first floor and feel completely carefree, since you can now endlessly return here...because once you leave for the following floor you'd best get that protection up again as if you die there it's game over! That's right just because you switched it on the floor above doesn't mean you'll be safe on each floor afterwards, as you won't come back in that location. Meaning you'll have to make sure you either: "A. fill up your health before you die...or...B. You find and turn off the cyborg conversion on the healing chamber" when you go to a new level as each level's conversion is turn on and you'll have to find it if you wanna come back to life in that same level/area. The last thing to note about difficulty is that when you enter cyberspace not only do you have a life meter inside; alongside that, you also have a time limit and if you fail either way...you'll take semi-major damage when you exit and your energy will be almost completely drained.

    As we can see above, the difficulty does NOT joke around inside this game. When SHODAN says "she'll make you learn more about pain than you'll have ever want to know!" she seriously meant it! Funny thing is that there aren't actually any real bosses per se for the duration for the duration of the game, except for the final boss before you finish the game. Because of the relentless nature of the enemies, the thought you'll have to use when hacking a door or panel, and the somewhat forgivable nature of the respawn chambers. An 8 out of 10 for difficulty seem pretty fair here! (or at least a lot more fair than the enemies) Time to end this off *shoots pulser V6 weapon at main boss, while escaping destruction of cyberspace*

    *Steps away from terminal beat up and exhausted* Nnnn! It's finally all over...the insane microchip of an A.I has finally been taken down once and for all. Those crazed lunatics at Tri-Op actually felt like I was worthy of a position there after my mission's success...no way I was going to be involved in a company that nearly killed me in the first place, with a messed up captain and inhibitions. I declined the offer as soon as I could because of this, also with the fact that *taps forehead* I'm not letting them take this special equipment away from me after the nightmare I just went through for them! *enters back into apartment* But this story is getting to long and I've involved myself enough so this is where I'll say goodbye, hopefully you all and I...never have to meet again.  .........*shows computer starting up and hacking through VizCorp files*

                    [|||]Maintenance Level]===[

                __++Medical Level++__/

As always, you did an amazing job with your review. You always add so much detail to your reviews and they're always so long! I've never actually played this game before, but now that you've made this review, I feel like I have a better understanding of it. Again great job!

gamerforlifeforever2 : Glad ya still enjoyed it and it does kill me that a DOS like game is this long xD. Yeah I'm not surprised since this isn't a hugely known game; (even its sequel is more known) but, do think it's an interesting and fun one to look at. And thanks for that XD I swear it just doesn't wanna have me summon people her anymore!

Well done as always, Sonic! I really like your level of detail to these reviews. I actually want to try out System Shock, or it's sequel sometime. If I ever get the chance to. lol Thanks for introducing me to this game!

A user of this : Glad you enjoyed it :3 and yeah if you can't download it/figure out how to play it, then definitely would still take a look at it on youtube or something if you're interested. xD if you want a laugh could definitely check out the music x3
