Fan service is everywhere now and I don't see any reason to have it. Is it just to please men, or does it have a deeper meaning? For example, every female in DOA is large in the chest area and have revealing clothing. I think I'm the only person that plays it for the gameplay. (By the way, this is coming from a 13 year old boy)

Fan service is a marketting tactic typically used to attract adolescents (becuase puberty makes them dicover something hehe). For example, the video game League of Legends had somewhat laughable 'fan service' before Riot was finacially sound. Heard of battle panties or warrior outfits that belong on a stripper? They had them (and still do to a lesser extant). Uber masculine men or really boyish guys? They had them (and still do to a lesser extant). This kind of stuff helps pull in people who would normaly not play this video game genre becuase they thinks its 'too nerdy', or might even draw gamers from another game. All in all, it's about generating more money from the game through the use of very basic consumer pyschology. Give 'em what they want even if it's exploitive, I guess. Games marketed to a more mature audience still have fan service and are either more tame with it or go all out with it. Skyrim would be a good example of game that did not totally exploit the use of fan service. The armours are sort of realistic and theres only one armour in the game that has a 'boob window' as far as I know, which is quite the milestone. While the game does feature unrealistic body types and revealing armour the company also left the game entirely open to modification, meaning if you don't like something it can be changed. It's easy enough to find a game that totally exploits fan service, so I'm not going to provide an example for that.

I myself play video games for the gameplay and story, graphics are a bonus to good writing and programming. The fact that a game might have my ideal body type being fluanted throughout it doesn't make a real difference to me but it might to other poeple.

Am I the only one who realizes both of you miss interpet "fan service" as "unnessesary sexual appeal"? Fan service is just to apease fans and give them what they want to mantain those fans. If you want a good example of fan service that has no sexual appel, check MLP: FiM S5E9 "Slice of Life" (Sorry if it's not your thing, first thing that came to mind).

I really don't think that fan service is necessary at all. I've always play games for the gameplay, not for other stuff not related to gameplay.

bigger0gamer : That is basically what I was going to say, but I was going to explain it as a form of marketing.

Fan service is a loaded phrase. Most people confuse it with "sex appeal". Fan service is anything done to cater to or please fans. While sex appeal is just to cater mainly to adolescent fans. Or to be less stereotypical; just a small group of fans.

Fan service, when done right, can be amazing! While sex appeal tries to make you forget about the writer's laziness by going "Hey guis look, bewbs!" to which, too many people look, and all is forgiven. Fan service by itself is fine however. Although it too can be used for bad. But I like the times when they are sort of a love letter to fanbases.

I wonder what the character limit on this thing is.

I'm always very happy and grateful when gaming companies use ways to give back to their fans, such as Mario figurines or even candy or other types of food based on a gaming franchise. That kind of fan service I'm not against at all unless it's being used for bad.

As for the other type of fan service, I'm against it. It greatly annoys me and disappoints me when games do things like making characters have revealing clothing.

The hole sex based fan service in video games can be annoying. While yes in some cases it is a nice reward to see some bewbs every now again but when the game is full of them that not only turns away most females but it distracts the gamer

Really fan service can be anything to cater to long time fans of a franchise so I think you're getting your terms mixed up but I'm pretty sure you're talking about female characters often being sexualized.

That's really a common trend in gaming nowadays especially MMORPGs, it's really done to attract young men and boys to them, it's really an annoying marketing tactic to get people to play their games. And has almost become a standard in RPGs overall women having unrealistic amours, that are made to look sexually appealing, of course that isn't to say sexualization of males in gaming doesn't happen either.

I've seen a lot of "free to play mmo" advertisement just basically telling you to play the games because, which is usually a good indicator that it doesn't have much else to offer in terms of story or gameplay.

I guess everyone wants to see what they want to see. Catering to the fans is a good thing most of the time, not a bad thing. Gamers tend to know what they want in a game. I guess it kinda depends on what exactly you are calling "fan service"

I mean take a game like Retro City Rampage for example. They have all sorts of easter eggs referring to 80's and 90's pop culture. They did this because they understood the audience that would play their games. So in this manner they were just giving the fans what they wanted in that regard and made them feel nostalgic to simpler times.
