Once again Gex has another game, which is amazing to me considering how the past games were. Now, I never actually physically owned any of the previous games, but I did own this one. I remember enjoying Gex 3 back when I was younger, but views can change with time. With that being said I will give renewed views on Gex 3.
Story Okay, so I guess Gex is rich now considering that he has own turtle butler and owns his own small island (I think, I'm not entirely sure). Anyways, some new character named Agent Xtra has been captured and trapped in the media dimension by Rez. But, the thing about Agent Xtra is that despite being new character the game gives you little consolation about who she is and how she and Gex know each other. Another thing about her is that she is a pure FMV character, and I am not talking about 3D FMV, no, I'm talking about live action FMV. Lastly, She only appears when you beat a level for the first time during which, she says a pun regarding the level to which Gex replies with flirtation dialogue. Oh, and if the whole Sonic and Princess Elise romance disgusted you, then the romance between Gex and Agent Xtra will make you wretch. Okay, now moving on to something less horrifying, the graphics.
Graphics The graphics, honestly, haven't gotten any improvements. I mean, maybe the textures have improved a tiny bit, but they would so minuscule that you probably wouldn't notice. Not to mention it still suffers from that irritating thing of the textures shifting everytime you move Gex or the camera. Also the images used for the projectiles are rather poor, having rather bold black outline. But, the models are still good enough for the cartoony style of the game. Likewise, Gex also gets a different costume for each level, which is kind of neat. And like the graphics themselves the sound doesn't really improve much at all.
Sound The sound effects are still actually pretty good. They’re fairly well designed for the comedic style of the game. The music also fits itself very well to the theme of the level, such as this christmas themed level having this typical old christmas film music. However, the offense that I found in the game’s sound is Gex himself. He keeps saying these stupid lines that you won’t be able to get unless you understand the reference. It gets extremely annoying very quickly, and makes you want to hit Gex. But, the gameplay does fare little better than Gex’s talking.
Gameplay Gex tries again to copy Super Mario 64, though thankfully the selection area is much improved from the previous game with great variation in the entire environment. Even the goals are more improved from the previous game with them being more fun, such as having to do these three mini-games at different locations to earn the remote. Additionally, Gex can collect gecko prints to increase his maximum health found throughout the selection area and levels themselves. There are also these bonus coins that Gex can collect to unlock bonus level, which are just stupid coin collect-a-thons. Oh, but you can get different characters for those levels, which sounds cool right? Well, it’s not because all those characters are just different looking clones of Gex. Luckily though, the power-ups have reverted back to how they worked in the first game. There are also these costume power-ups that can grant Gex either super strength or flight. However, power-ups in this game are very rare unlike how it was in the first game. As well Gex still feels a bite stiff when jumping, which causes the entire game to have mediocre platforming. The boss fights are also disappointing, and they are unique from each other but none of them stand out. In fact, none of the game stands out, at least not in a entirely positive way.
Just like Gex 2 Gex 3 was a chance for improvement, which it kinda is. But, despite additions like health increase or improvements like better goal design the core issues still stand. Gex is still the most annoying character (besides Bubsy) I’ve ever seen in gaming, and the platforming is still stiff with a bad camera. I can only thank every deity ever that this was the last game in the series. Once again Gex has another game, which is amazing to me considering how the past games were.
